Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

Hi all...

Thank you @Appleblossom, @Mazarita & @Jacques...

My mood is still low & I struggle with suicidal ideation (I am safe). I get extremes of anxiety.... Yoga helps ~ that is why I push myself to do it despite exhaustion. I've never looked into tai chi ~ yoga is enough at the moment. I wanted to get a run in this week, but it didn't happen. I need to be patient with myself....

I'm glad you are having a good night @Jacques - how do you drink coffee at night & sleep?!

I'll see if I can get Cloudstreet from the library. Thank you @Mazarita ~ how was your walk along the beach with your friend? (or is that planned for tomorrow?)

I haven't actually properly rested yet today - the bedroom was too hot until early evening ~ then dinner was ready. I decided to start an online journal this afternoon - I wrote a long post & somehow my computer deleted it. Oh well, lately my journal attempts have been writing with pen & paper ~ then tearing it up. Hopefully, it will become another healthy way to help me cope.

Namaste,

A

Re: Night Shift

Yes i totally understand @Former-Member, Yoga is fantastic, i am so glad you listen to your body, i know how much you love running, maybe next week.

I am so sad to hear you are still struggling, it is aweful to have such big mood swings, i get them too. i never know from minute to minute how i feel.

Haha, well ihave been drinking vast somes of coffee since the age of 16, i used to say up all night programming, coffee kept me going, but the caffene does not have any effect on me now, it is like drinking a glass of warm milk, although i do shake and get headaches if i don't drink it, maybe i am addicted to it.

Re: Night Shift

Try not to force yourself to sleep @Former-Member, it only makes you stay awake, a rule of thumb, if you cant get to sleep in 20 min, get up and try slow breathing, have a glass of warm milk or cup of tea, or walk around the house.

sending you a virtual shoulder massage.

Thank you @Former-Member, i am hoping i can sleep tonight too, it would be nice to sleep 2 nights this month.

Re: Night Shift

No wonder you are struggling being that sleep deprived. @Jacques

Isolate the issues and just deal with one at a time.

My son has just come to do some singing. So see you.

Re: Night Shift

I have been really pushing myself this year @Appleblossom, things are moving away form my control so fast, i have been going out once a week, sometimes twice and i have my aunt moving in, i just can't slep with the panic attacks, i just try to close my eyes and rest them. it is better than nothing.

I will try @Appleblossom, i have been trying to practice mindfullness, but i can't help but focus on how i am going to cope.

I hope your son has a great time, i hope you sing with him, a nice duet 🙂

Take care my virtual mum

Re: Night Shift

Thanks @Jacques

There are many different useful practices. Try different approaches if you have been at it a while (year-ish) and it hasnt worked for you. You seem practical and physical and all the work in house and garden is great for reasons of the product and it keeps you going. Keep imagining projects. You are good at it.

I found meditation and mindfulness positive during my 20s but by my 30s I was too wound up ... it just wasnt strong enough to have an effect on the internal pressure and chaos I was experiencing, herbal tea wasnt any use then either. Also my husband used to ridicule me for meditating and I stopped and the main thing that kept me going through my worst years were books. Sometimes it would take me an hour to read a paragraph, but when I wasnt doing the necessities I played a bit of piano and read. Piano was pretty dynamic and intense .. and could be good to discharge energy when I was flooded with it ... manic?? though when I was not well I could only manage simple pieces ... like a favourite Mozart slow movement from a symphony. I had a lot of insomnia and sometimes would fall asleep at the wrong time. I didnt start anti-dep meds til 40ish. They help a bit ... but ...

yes nearly two years now, i would love to get back to reading, i think i will try, i find it so hard to concentrate.

@Appleblossom people ridicule what they don't understand, maybe you should try meditation again.

Re: Night Shift

I did start meditation again ... especially Metta the Buddhist loving-kindness meditation. Have been over the last 10 years.

Good night. Sleep as well as you can.
