Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

@PeppiPatty, yes, feel free to tell me anything. We are friends. Thanks for thinking of me. I think of you too.

What a memory of going to Bali that is. You must have been alone, I guess, except for the driver. You may have needed to sleep a lot just then maybe. Taking notes on a book you are reading is doing something and is okay I think. I travelled overseas alone a few times when I was in my 30s and had some anxious, sick and withdrawn times, and some wonderful other experiences. I don't have any desire to travel overseas for now (and can't afford to anyway).

Your dad and your step-dad both treated you badly. That's hard, as have been many other experiences you've described. Maybe it's not so surprising that you get very tired. I do think it's okay whatever you do, whether it's sleeping or walking on the beach.

Re: Night Shift

@PeppiPatty, Lol on the Take 5. If I had the money I'd save it cos I haven't got much of that, maybe spend a bit more buying some clothes at op shops and on ebay, get a new computer, buy more gifts. Too late for me too to talk any more now, nighty night. ox

Re: Night Shift

@PeppiPatty your Bali story is sad and ironic. It is not nice when people pretend to be doing something to help you but it is all about themselves.

When I travelled I did it in one huge block ... for a year ... didnt read much .. except for the odd book exchanged with others on the road.

@Mazarita When I worked in opshop .. I collected clothes for a while. I bought bags and bags and eventually developed a layered mix and match style. I owned a house but no clothes and did dress very weird as it was all tattered and originally bought in op shop anyway. My son could not work out why I had good taste in clothes for him but not for me. When I first started buying in op shops it was hard as they didnt have things big or tall enough and I often bought men's jackets and shirts. i didnt care too much what I looked like ...

For quite a few years I found that the tone of people's voices was more respectful if we were speaking on the phone than in person. I figured it was cos of the clothes.

Now I can afford new clothes, have enough and stay away from further temptation, but I dont like "talking" clothes or looks. If we cant move on to talking about more important things quickly I guess I lose respect for the person ... as superficial .. and as I was so hurt by those attitudes when young ... just keep a polite distance.

So glad you are getting organised and mentally prepared for your new job. I did it for a year.

Re: Night Shift

@Appleblossom, ironic about owning a house but dressing in tattered clothes. A year is a good innings at the op shop you worked for. Interesting to imagine what you look like, a bit amazonian, as you seem to be in your inner life too. I have gone through lots of times when I haven't cared much what I looked like. In my younger days I also dressed in men's jackets and other odd stuff found very cheap in op shops. Back then I remember the shops as so disorganised. There was one I bought from that was really just piles and piles of clothes packed into a little storefront. You'd rifle through them to find something to wear, ultra cheap. Gave me hayfever after about a minute in the place so I had to be quick, lol. The good thing about men's jackets from op shops in Melbourne in those days is that they were often warm, quality fabrics with plenty of room to layer up underneath. It was partly a kind of 'punk' style choice for me to dress that way too back then. I'm okay with people being superficial, especially if it involves genuine enjoyment, laughter and fun. Can get a bit boring though, I agree, if that's all there is to what we share. Thanks for the good wishes on Monday's volunteering.

Re: Night Shift

Hi y'all. I just went for a lovely long walk and chatted to a couple of neighbours. i have hardly worked on my books at all so far this year and must get to it. what a lovely day i just had - went to an art exhibition too (art exhibitions are one of my favourite things to go to) and bought myself a treat at the bakery. Had a chinotto with a friend and dropped a card in to apologise to someone i let down 😞 🙂

how are we all? i wonder if there's anything good on tv tonight? i saw 'the force awakens' the other day and thought it was pretty enjoyable. it kept me awake, so that was good, and i think i felt the force stirring too!
