Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

@Billamba is there anything you can do to stop cycling so rapidly? and if there is some trigger or warning at least some of the time can you head the unwellness off at the pass? i felt myself slipping into depression about two years ago and got straight on the phone to lifeline when i recognised the symptoms of growing depression. there is, of course, a way through depression, but it's harder to get out of once you're already in it. prevention is better than cure.

Re: Night Shift

oh no @Mazarita I hate black outs too, get really scared. lights are always on in my house.

Theres always some idjits out there hooning around here 😞 drives me crazy! I have a nice lil cozy house here now but it backs on to a bit of an icky area with quite a bit of yelling over nights unfortunately but i do feel ok here.

Glad you are home, hopefully you get a good nights sleep!!

Re: Night Shift

@Former-Member you've already done massive 'head miles' last week worrying about starting the job. i'd sleep all day tomorrow if i was you.

cognitive distortions, yes, catastrophising and triggers. yes, one needs perspective, and work. i worked for a mental health organisation for a while but they didn't have many hours for me so i quit.

Re: Night Shift

@Billamba do meds help you cycle less rapidly? and try meditation - i would recommend meditation to anyone to promote a clearer mind. try ten mins every morning.

Re: Night Shift

you are a glutton for punishment, lise! best wishes and god bless.

actually, the career field i particularly wanted to follow doesn't really discriminate against mental illness, sort of (it's an artistic field); neither does writing, in a way - certainly i can write stuff and get it published easily enough, and i do all the time. it's just the working from home bit that gets me, and trying to self-discipline to a work routine when i haven't even had much social contact to look forward to in recent times. anyway, i perseverate.

Re: Night Shift

and then after spending too much time at home, i stop going to social stuff and eventually my friends stopped inviting me. but anyway,i've still got my friends (which is incredible) and all is good.

Re: Night Shift

yes,we do just have to keep going... Being social is so hard, for so many reasons. Do you have friends you meet up with regularly @Terry?

Re: Night Shift

@Former-Member not much at the moment. i've kept to myself a LOT for quite a while now. I had gotten sick of my friends and was going out to things alone. However, that's not the right attitude nor very nice to my friends. i'm looking forward to establishing more routine and a 'mild' social-life this year. i have known everyone at a local drop-in centre for over a decade and they go on social outings quite regularly, which i am going to re-start attending. i had quite chronic anxiety and pushed everyone away for a while, but some very amazing loyal people have stuck by me. life HAS been chaotic - a regular work schedule would help and there will be some way for me to achieve that, which i'm working on at present.
