Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita If you like essential oils .. they can help .. because as you regain your sense of smell and taste .. and clean out your lungs .. they can be a reward and a carrot ...

Does your partner smoke in the flat .. do you have a balcony or courtyard?

Re: Night Shift

@Appleblossom Partner doesn't smoke in the flat, we each have our own little courtyard. I do like essential oils, thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Night Shift

yes it was tough, especially since I smoked to control the anxiety, I still get cravings from time to time when I am stressed, but I can control them.

Make sure you find something to keep your hands occupied, I know straws and pens worked for me, anything to keep my hands occupied.

@Mazarita their is no such thing as failed, just another attempt at quitting. 🙂

Re: Night Shift

That is a huge help if the air in the flat is clear. @Mazarita More incentive to smell the roses ... and the smell of butter ... and garlic ..

Like @Jacques I had a torrid time quitting. But I had 2 babies 16 months apart and they convinced me. it was still the hardest drug to get off ... as it is so entwined in daily life. In the public service I wasnt the only one with an overflowing ash-tray. It has been about 27 years since my last cigarette ... cant remember exactly when ...I started stopping before the girls .. but not quite ... the last few years I was mostly a non-smoker ... or a handful a day ... still I fell back into it a few times when stress happened .. with all your walking on the beach you will come to love the freshness of no cigs in your life.

I did a daft thing today .. had to go across town and thought I would pop a parcel in at the post office ... but it was still cosed ... so I carried the blooming thing on 2 trains and 2 trams and oin the walk back home again ... ah well ther is always tomorrow.

Re: Night Shift

@Jacques Great that you can control the cravings now. The long term is what I've got my eye on as well as just giving up now. I'm already fairly fidgety with my fingers when I'm sitting around and that does tend to be when I want to smoke too. Maybe why I like computer, video editing and used to be a typist. Gives me something to do with the nervous energy, comes out through my hands and into the keyboard. Will watch out for what you are saying with my hands and maybe try to think of something to do with them that might work. Sounds like you are about to go to bed, goodnight and thanks for visiting again.

Re: Night Shift

@Appleblossom Yes, air is clear. My biggest problem and compulsion is with the funny stuff. I barely smoke tobacco at all when that is not around. What a nuisance carrying that parcel with you on all those trips. Just one of those funny things that happens to us sometimes. I've had a fair few odd things like that in my time. Sometimes I can even enjoy my foolishness.

Re: Night Shift

After thinking of leaving the parcel somewhere as surprise for a homeless person ... I decided I wanted to send it as planned ... so that is what I did .. and yes laughed at my folly.

Cost and concentration probably helped me in regard to weed ... as I came home after travelling for a year and having it land gratis in my lap from all over ... I focussed on study and music and getting HSC at night school then uni etc.

it really helps if you can isolate the reasons that it will make your life better .. so that becomes the mental focus rather than having to do without something. I was ok saying no thanks or passing the bong or joint on ... once it had clicked inside me that that was what I wanted to do.

Re: Night Shift

@PeppiPatty Glad you have aircon with the heat over there. We have an aircon unit in the main room here that we just turn on for short bursts of cool when it gets too much or too humid. Nighty night.

Re: Night Shift

@Appleblossom If partner sticks to plan, we won't have any more of the funny stuff in the flat after this lot runs out. That would help enormously as I tend not to make outside efforts to get hold of it myself. Fingers crossed this is actually what happens. Good idea with focussing on why my life will be better, makes perfect sense.
