Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

@PeppiPatty & @Appleblossom - thanks for your kind messages....

I just watched Silver Linings Playbook again to help me de-stress a bit.... I'm going to try to sleep now. I was up at 4:30...

Sorry @Billamba I hope you have a better day tomorrow - your parents sound painful. I have had to live with my mum several times since leaving home & it was very hard.

Namaste,

Anna

Re: Night Shift

Hi @Mazarita

I saw you around ... sounds as if you had a lovely laid back day.

I wonder if @Former-Member gets some sleep and her kiddiliwinks.

@PeppiPatty is probably still out with son.

I survived and lightly touched on a few things with son. A sum up since his psychotic episode and mother's death. As 2 years ago he was in mhu and just let home for christmas day. He wasnt defensive or blocking, as he often is ..... just agreed that we have both done well to have a lovely day and get through the last 2 years.

I havent felt particularly angry or sad when I think of mum. Just quiet and thoughtful ... a little bit like how I took dad's death when I was 11. Maybe thats something to nurture in me ... its been around for a while.

cheers

Re: Night Shift

Hi @Appleblossom, Yes, it was good here especially with partner, easygoing, peaceful. Sounds like you had a rewarding day. Connecting with your son. Finding a quiet, thoughtful space to be in for the anniversary day. Glad to hear it. I'm logging off for the night now. This will probably be the last time I say this for this year: 'Merry Christmas'!

Re: Night Shift

Hi everyone I'm trying to catch up a bit, sorry to read of your difficulties @Billamba and @Former-Member - I had a parent who told me I was fat as a young kid/ teen, a lot, even though I wasn't really but I believed I was.I lost weight but it didn't matter. It stays with you. I hope you can let go of it as you go.
Your son sounds as though he's matured greatly in the last few years, as well as recovered a lot from his illness , you seem to be doing so well too @Appleblossom. I'm sorry that today was the anniversary of your mum though. I hope you continue to go well.
So glad you had a lovely day with your partner @Mazarita

Re: Night Shift

Thank you everyone for your kind words and support.

Things are a little better now and I had a nice Christmas Day thankfully - helped greatly by the other people to soften the tension a little.

* trigger warning* (i don't know if I need to do this but have as I do talk about some things that happened to me that may trigger others)

It's going to be a long road and I know that. We have years and years of history to get through and I don't think we ever will. I think to an extent I will just have to keep the peace and shut up for the sake of family.

My brother has ADHD, Aspergers and other issues and he was down right cruel to me as a child and I really struggle to move past it. With all of his associated issues and me being a 'neurotypical' child I feel my parents let a lot of stuff slide at home to give him a break and probably themselves too. It has never been discussed or addressed the horrible things he did to me (threatening me with knives in my face, pulling huge chunks of hair out, punching me in places he knew I would never expose to others etc). I would try so hard to get my parents to listen but I was forever told I must have provoked him or asked for it. An interesting attitude when they are so strong in their feelings with violence against women - a women never asks for violence, it's always the man at blame yet it was never like that with my brother and I. And let me tell you it went a lot further than 'normal' sibling fights. The associated issues of never being helped run deep and the hurt is never far from the surface.

I feel like at the moment I'm holding on but not all that present either... If that makes sense

Re: Night Shift

@Billamba, that's awful what happened between your brother and you when you were growing up. I hope there's never anything like that with him now. I can understand your frustration about the past with your parents, and the current issues with living with them again too. Can you remind me whether your brother live with your parents also, or whether he just there for Christmas Day? I think we have talked about this before but my memory is sometimes not the best. I'm also a bit preoccupied with something that's happened today.

There's been some bad news for my nearby close friend. Her nephew's life hangs in the balance. He has bipolar and there are many questions about how he came to be in critical condition in intensive care early this morning. I have met him a number of times over the years and seen him in various conditions with his mental illness. My friend and I have talked at length about him many times because I am also bipolar. I feel affected by these events but am okay. Just good to be able to write down what's happened a little bit here.

@Former-Member, your posts about feeling let down by a friend have got me thinking about the nature of friendship. I have had similar let down feelings at times, especially when I've felt isolated. I also have to admit I have let down friends in the past in similar ways. It's almost always been to do with me and my inner struggles. But I think I may also have different expectations of friendship these days, as in not too many expectations at all really, except friends are basically nice to each other. Friend fights I don't do too well and they have had a tendency to end in complete breaks. I'm not sure what all of this says about me but there it is. Hope there's a better outcome with your friend next time you have contact.

Re: Night Shift

Sorry to hear about the young man you know in hospital @Mazarita .. hope you are dealing with it ok.

I think your idea about not having too much expectation on friends or other people is fair. i am not sure what all the expectation is about ...

Hi @Billamba

It is not right that you had to endure your brother's aggression. A lot of people still seem to have a bias towards supporting males or letting them off the hook for bad behaviour .. even if they think sexism is wrong ... whether it be under the lovable larrikin moniker or they have an illness. A lot of people with aspergers are not at all aggressive or violent.

I dealt with similar bias toward the male boy in my family. I didnt realise its importance. Not that my brother was violent to me as a boy, he tickled a bit hard, that was all, and I thought we were good mates, but after my father died he was always indulged by my mother and he became more and more controlling and then violent, mostly to the church and my mother. Mostly I trusted in him and me and I often tried to talk him down from anger or violent converations but sadly 6 weeks before he died he turned on me, and I was really his best friend on the planet.

One reason it was really weird and unexpected ... was that he started getting angry to me when drunk because I had done maths .. it was so out of left field ... I was older, had helped him a bit with math homework ... I didnt realise he was jealous, he had never been so sexist before, but mother had just bought him a car and he had had an overseas trip with his second wife ... he started on about ... that maths was not useful for women to know ... and then suddenly he flew at me ... I couldnt fight back I just went weak at the knees and submitted .. I was exhausted anyway from driving kids across town and then still had 3 hour driving trip to pickup oldest child from access with her biological mother.

My mother allowed him to seriously abuse me in front of my kids... I dont know if you can change your family dynamic too much .. I did all I could to help mine... in the end survival is all I managed ... my trust and love of my family in tatters. The only thing that kept me a quarter sane was starting a music degree part-time.

As a piano teacher I have also seen the gender bias often between siblings .. boys are allowed to be more assertive or aggressive or competitive .... sometimes its subtle... girls usually manage it by stopping the argument... but that means compromise or acceptance of abuse.

Yet men can be good human beings too.
