Re: RE: Darkness surrounds me
Consider this scenario @Former-Member...
You are a grade 2 or 3 student coming across place value in a maths lesson for the first time. (deliberately choosing this age range Nell to refer to the child you - that is important in this scenario)
You have never seen nor heard about place value. The teacher is writing questions on the board and directs you to answer the first one - this one is rounding a number to the closet thousand. Instantly you are placed not only in an uncomfortable position because you have been 'singled out' and not volunteered and you also have never seen numbers that big or have any concept of place value. This child is now in a world so foreign to them that they do not know how to react, how to respond and how to answer the question.
If the teacher had taken the time to understand their student's actual awareness of the topic then they would not have 'picked on them' - instead they would have spent one on one time to slowly and carefully walk that student through the concept of place value beginning with units. Once the student could show they had a clear understanding of what units were/represented they could then move on to tens and so on.....
This is the maths problem for you then @Former-Member .... consider each thought as having a place value - some thoughts are made up of units and some larger - but each has a value inside your thinking. Are you able to differentiate your thoughts by giving then a place value?

Re: RE: Darkness surrounds me
I think so @Zoe7. I will try to give them a place value

@Zoe7 that is a very clever way of thinking of things.

Thanks @outlander but I do feel it.
I still cannot shake the SI or SH. I've moved everything away from me so I won't be tempted again

When you are assigning a value to your thoughts @Former-Member be mindful that it takes alot of little units (well 10 actually - as you well know lol) to make up a 10 and so on. The 'really big' thoughts - that we would naturally assign a much higher place value to may infact be much less when we break them down into measurable parts.
