The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Following on from the outstanding success of "The Great Yoga Adventure Thread", here begins one that may appeal to a larger sector of the Sane Forum population. Although I have started it in the Lived Experience side, anyone is welcome to join us as we put one foot in front of the other and walk to improve our mental and physical wellbeing.

I hope you will accompany me. Here we can talk about how, when, where and why we walk. It's a place to discuss our progress and share what we see along the way.

Walking is my thing. I love it. I do it in several ways. During the weekdays, I get up early and take a brisk walk usually stopping in along the way at the supermarket to pick up some groceries. Around mid morning, I take my dog for a stroll. Then late afternoon, I walk to and from a yoga session. Lastly, at night, it's another walk for the pooch.

On weekends, I like to go a bit further afield and discover new stuff. I often take photos as well during these walks.

I use an App on my phone called Pacer which monitors the distance and steps that I walk. I do a minimum of 10 000 steps each day. Some of you may be more high tech and have a Fitbit or equivalent.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Finished up with 6400 steps for the day @soul

Sort of feeling better, will have an hour or two where I feel ok then another wave of sweat then chills will wash over me followed by a coughing fit.

Managed a single lap around the local park this ave while boys were at youth group but it was at snails pace and we stopped half way for a break. Hate feeling this flat.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

@souland everyone. Dropped off the radar (and life) and the last couple days. I've been slipping back into my depression again, was only 'up' for less than 2 weeks. It's so exhausting, as many of you know, and robs me of any motivation I might have. I haven't done a proper walk in the last 2 days, but I did some incidental walking on Thursday which took my steps to about 8500. I can't sync my vivo fit right now, so not sure of exact numbers. Yesterday was worse, no walk & no incidental. Almost complete inertia. I have a car boot sale this morning to attend, and I'll try to fit in an afternoon walk.

Well done to everyone on your efforts, no matter how big or small.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

I was struggling a bit yesterday with grief and loneliness but did my usual walking. The instructor of the Meditation workshop that I have been attending said it didn't mean just sitting crossed legged trying to empty your mind.

She mentioned how walking was a good way to meditate and think things through. Even micro meditating can occur as you look up at the clouds and admire their formation.

I was a bit teary during yoga last night. Luckily there were only five students and I was at the back of the class. Afterwards I detoured during my walk home and went around a park three times. It was nice in the dark and I was listening to some lovely music. Felt a lot better after that.

Did 12kms yesterday. Have been out this morning with the pooch.

Hope you all have the opportunity to walk somewhere nice this weekend.

Hey @Sans911 - hope you are able to grab a few things from that emergency care wall to get you through. I got a subscription to Apple Music - 99cents for three months and I put my earphones in and walk and walk. It helps me a lot even if I do wear out my shoes faster.

Hope things improve for you. That down feeling really sucks.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Another 12kms today. I usually do a big walk each Sunday morning. Might get up earlier than usual and get to somewhere to watch the sun rise. The weather is supposed to be cloudy though so the sun rise bit might be a non event.

Was thinking about getting an exercise bike for those days when it rains although it has been so dry for ages here. I used to have one plus a treadmill.
