The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Following on from the outstanding success of "The Great Yoga Adventure Thread", here begins one that may appeal to a larger sector of the Sane Forum population. Although I have started it in the Lived Experience side, anyone is welcome to join us as we put one foot in front of the other and walk to improve our mental and physical wellbeing.

I hope you will accompany me. Here we can talk about how, when, where and why we walk. It's a place to discuss our progress and share what we see along the way.

Walking is my thing. I love it. I do it in several ways. During the weekdays, I get up early and take a brisk walk usually stopping in along the way at the supermarket to pick up some groceries. Around mid morning, I take my dog for a stroll. Then late afternoon, I walk to and from a yoga session. Lastly, at night, it's another walk for the pooch.

On weekends, I like to go a bit further afield and discover new stuff. I often take photos as well during these walks.

I use an App on my phone called Pacer which monitors the distance and steps that I walk. I do a minimum of 10 000 steps each day. Some of you may be more high tech and have a Fitbit or equivalent.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

We have had 2 good days this weekend. He asked for a civilsed day and an "uncivilised" eg bush day. There was about 30 mins he was frustrated, but we were out all afternoon. There was a busload and enough other families etc enjoying the spot but enough silence a quiet to be social for us introverted types.

2,yes 2 walks today @soul. 2nd walk included a BIG hill. I'm doing ok today, feels good to be alive for once. Don't know how long this feeling will last so I'm soaking it all up. Step count is 8962, so a little over 3kms I think.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

My walking was just around the same old streets. 13 137 steps. Didn't get to do the second dog walk because of rain. We really need it but I wish it would just happen at night. I needed an umbrella to walk to and from yoga this afternoon. Rain predicted again for tomorrow. I don't like my walking interrupted like this. It has become so second nature to me and ingrained as part of my routine, if I miss out, it's like not brushing my teeth before bed.

I'm really envious (but happy for them too) of those people who have walked in beautiful places. It is so uplifting especially when you don't have to be concerned about crossing roads and blocking out visual pollution.

@Appleblossom - how very fortunate of you to be walking in a gorge with your son. Maybe I can persuade my kids to go on a nature with me. @Former-Member - nearly 10 000 steps - great effort.

@Maggie - did you get to triple digits??

@Shaz51 - it's okay to be lazy - tomorrow is another day. Just don't be lazy all week.

@Faith-and-Hope - are you enjoying walking in Melbourne?

@Determined - wish you could take some time to yourself and walk some place nice. Kids ready for back to school soon?

Not as much as back home @soul .... and still mindful of this injury, it's all been incidental exercise here this time.

Kidlets back to school tomorrow @soul, with rain predicted to set in I will have to break out the treadmill if I want to walk. Might try for some time on the cycle trainer after lunch.

Looking forward to disappearing for some me time after uni finished. 5 weeks to go!!!

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Would love to go walking in the rain right now, would be lovely, but given how tired and wired I am at the moment I'm guessing that my immune response would be less than ideal .

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Well, the rain hampered my walking efforts somewhat today but I did manage 11 047 steps. Walked to Yoga and back with a brolly. Pooch only got one walk but doesn’t seem to mind. She’s curled up on the sofa.

@soul-I took the same walk of about 20mins up a steep hill. My steps today were 6497.Not as much as yesterday but walking 2 days up a steep hill is a good effort.

Steep hills are hard work @Sans911.
