The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Following on from the outstanding success of "The Great Yoga Adventure Thread", here begins one that may appeal to a larger sector of the Sane Forum population. Although I have started it in the Lived Experience side, anyone is welcome to join us as we put one foot in front of the other and walk to improve our mental and physical wellbeing.

I hope you will accompany me. Here we can talk about how, when, where and why we walk. It's a place to discuss our progress and share what we see along the way.

Walking is my thing. I love it. I do it in several ways. During the weekdays, I get up early and take a brisk walk usually stopping in along the way at the supermarket to pick up some groceries. Around mid morning, I take my dog for a stroll. Then late afternoon, I walk to and from a yoga session. Lastly, at night, it's another walk for the pooch.

On weekends, I like to go a bit further afield and discover new stuff. I often take photos as well during these walks.

I use an App on my phone called Pacer which monitors the distance and steps that I walk. I do a minimum of 10 000 steps each day. Some of you may be more high tech and have a Fitbit or equivalent.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Trying hard to get back into a walking habbit @soul, was on a roll at the start of the year but fell flat when everything was falling down around me 😕

Going to have to start over now with a 5 to 10 min walk along the flat and work back up to 30 - 45 min up and down our hill.

A few years ago when the gp was anxious to get me on blood preassure meds I managed to get the bp down by going for a 1/2 hr walk for lunch and leave my phone behind. People at work weren't happy about me disappearing like that but no one wad brave enough to challenge me lol.

Finished last year with a goal of 100km/ week on my bike but have not been on it in over 6 months. Thats not going to hurt at all whrn I get back on it. Will be back to 5km rides again instead of 30 - 40 km rides.

Maybe this thread will be an incentive for you @Determined. My brother has just started walking again after a bit of a health scare. Maybe you could take the dogs.

@soul. I can pop in here from time to time. On those rare occasions when I do walk. I'm not going to set a km limit. Just a short walk 3 times a week is my aim. Will see how I go.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

@soul @Maggie Oh wow! Thanks a billion for starting this thread. I used to walk a lot, until my depression kicked my Bpd into overdrive. So trying to get back into it, now weather is warmer it's easier to get out. So my first goal on this thread is to walk to my appointment tommorow. It's about 2kms but I might try to stretch it out a little. Energy levels are pretty low, so I need to not push myself too hard. I report back tommorow

Off on my first walk of the day. Hope that you all get some steps in yourself. It's a beautiful Spring morning and I can hear the birds chirping - and the garbage truck 😞

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Yes @soul just back from a 20 minute walk with my fur baby. Birds chirping here also, and a beautiful spring morning. There were low clouds as I looked down over the city, covering some areas, so beautiful. A chorus of frogs in the distance though I've never seen one. My dr says a 1/2 Hr walk is the best thing for depression.
