The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Following on from the outstanding success of "The Great Yoga Adventure Thread", here begins one that may appeal to a larger sector of the Sane Forum population. Although I have started it in the Lived Experience side, anyone is welcome to join us as we put one foot in front of the other and walk to improve our mental and physical wellbeing.

I hope you will accompany me. Here we can talk about how, when, where and why we walk. It's a place to discuss our progress and share what we see along the way.

Walking is my thing. I love it. I do it in several ways. During the weekdays, I get up early and take a brisk walk usually stopping in along the way at the supermarket to pick up some groceries. Around mid morning, I take my dog for a stroll. Then late afternoon, I walk to and from a yoga session. Lastly, at night, it's another walk for the pooch.

On weekends, I like to go a bit further afield and discover new stuff. I often take photos as well during these walks.

I use an App on my phone called Pacer which monitors the distance and steps that I walk. I do a minimum of 10 000 steps each day. Some of you may be more high tech and have a Fitbit or equivalent.

@soulNow you are just boasting, but I love it! I don't know how you do it, I am tired just thinking about it. And you are holding me accountable too; there's no escape-lol! No, I didn't take a walk today. I have had some sleep issues and I am struggling with maintaining motivation.I will try tommorow.

@Former-MemberI know you didn't enjoy it sweet, but you still did 8kms, probably under steam. It's still a good effort

I bet you clocked up plenty of kms around the zoo @Appleblossom. My walking is how I de stress. Some of it is functional but most of the time I do it to benefit my state of mind.

Yes .... took it easy @soul ..... 15mins to the coffee shop, 15mins back ..... 2.4km .... total today is 4.6km, but the rest of it was incidental in lotsa bits and bobs.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

Thanks for the info about pedometers for mobiles, @soul, @Faith-and-Hope. I have downloaded Pacer for Android and will try that out today. From my initial tests to try to get the settings right, I can see it monitors less steps than I am taking even at maximum sensitivity. I also estimate I would probably take about 500 steps inside the flat per day that can't be monitored. I get up and down from the computer here a lot and walk around a fair bit inside. So I'll add those in to end total. Happy walking today, everyone!

Hey @Mazarita ..... 🤗💕

Do you have a small cross-body pouch of some sort ? If you "wear" your mobile phone in the house for a few days, it will give you a fair gauge of just how much to add on to your intentional exercise total. It may surprise you and be higher than you thought.

Re: The Walking for Wellbeing Thread

WOW you guys are doing so well. I arrived early for a Drs appointment, so instead of sitting anxiously in the waiting room I walked round a large block, took 15mins. Bought a pedometer from chemist, so will be interesting to see results.
