Is mental illness real?

Is mental illness real?

I'm starting to think not.

I think I'm just a useless failure of a human being and I have troub;e coping with this fact. It's not a real thing,I see this in the way most psychiatrists treat you like less than human. I'm not human. It's all just a joke.

And even with all this 'treatment' I'll always be me, a complete failure of a human being. It can't change who I am. So what's the point?

The problem is that if I cancel my psychiatrist appointment and don't get my blood tests done regularly they'll know. I don't know what to do. I could go to the appointments and lie, but how do I fake the blood tests? Can I just opt out? Tell them I'm done? Do they care? What's the point of all this?

Re: Is mental illness real?

Hi @Former-Member

I hear your screaming hun. I do. My screaming started in 1992. I asked my psych back then what it was and he asked me who was screaming. I said it was me. He didn't have an answer and looked suspiciously like a 1st yr med student. So much for 'learned professional'.

As time went on, I learnt what that screaming was about. All I can say, is that it was a normal response to some very abnormal situations. I ended up doing some 'Primal Scream' therapy which gave me the most peaceful feeling immediately after.

It was as though I screamed into that pillow from my toes. A primal, animal sound I'd never heard before. It went on for at least 20 min's and my friend who was helping me nearly called an ambulance. But, I never heard my screaming voice inside my head again.

A lot of what I released came from early childhood which was sparked by a particularly distressing situation with my toddler. Early trauma in babies/toddlers creates 'tactile' responses, not words or rationale. I let go of decades of abusive experiences in that 20 min's...from my body, lungs and tortured inner child.

As for our right to life? We deserve to live our lives as best as we can 'because' we were born. 'Because' we're still here. Feeling deserving of life can be an uphill climb indeed.

I wish you well 5-HT

Hope

I'm here @Former-Member

What are you scared about? Have you been scared like this before? What helped you before?

Re: Is mental illness real?

I'm scared about how worthless I am.

Hi @Former-Member. I was reading this thread earlier and feeling for you. I'm really feeling for you now too. I don't know exactly what it is you're scared of, but I understand how horrible it can feel to feel scared, and how awful it can be to feel scared and alone.

I'm here too, if it helps.

I was supposed to be stillborn. No one thought I would live. What happens if the devil intervened and I'm not supposed to be alive? Maybe that's why all this is happening?

Re: Is mental illness real?

@Former-Member that feeling of being worthless, is really tough. Has something happened today that's made all of this worse? You mentioned you had your trust broken by your psych, which is why I am asking. Definitely no need to share if you can't or don't want to.

Re: Is mental illness real?

Our posts are crossing over, sorry @Former-Member.

I don't know how to answer that except to say that I think I'd be feeling really scared asking those things of my life too.

I remember one time when you came past the nest and you weren't feeling very good but you had your blanket and cat with you and they helped you feel safe. Maybe even a teddy too I think? Do you have them with you at the moment?

Re: Is mental illness real?

Last appointment I had, I opened up a bit and told him something's I've never admitted to before and his mood totally changed. I don't know what he was thinking, but he seemed angry. Like he didn't want to be in the same room as me. He's now on holidays and told me to send him emails while he is gone. So I opened up in one and he never replied to tell me he received it. I feel like I should have never had told the truth. I should have never trusted him. I am a bad scum person. I shouldn't be alive.

Re: Is mental illness real?

I remember you saying that you were worried about opening up to him @Former-Member. I'm so sorry to hear that you did and that was the reaction you got. I find it can be SO hard to open up and it is the most awful feeling when it's met with anything other than respect. So sorry 5-HT. That sucks a lot.

It probably doesn't help you at the moment, but when really yuck feelings like this have happened to me in the past, often I end up reconciling it by thinking that the reaction was less to do with me and more to do with the other person. There could be heaps of reasons why that reaction was there that aren't because you're 'bad' or 'scum'. It probably doesn't make it better now though
