Staying Safe

Staying Safe

Hi just wondering how to negotiate staying safe with an unwell son.
I believe he may be manic he has created a debt, irritable and aggressive. Friends have commented to him that he is hyper and he commented himself on how he feels he is talking a lot. He likes the fact the meds have got him going ....fast but with it is snapping, anger and aggression.
We attended a community health review following his week in hospital in which he presented well and despite my concerns were told to just go see psychiatrist who is currently away, for follow up.
I am scared for my safety. I have had a drink sprayed around my car and me whilst driving. He has deliberately upended food and furniture on the floor, broken items and seems to think his behavior is warranted.
When he us calm he agrees not to be this way but can't do it obviously when out of control.

He has worked last 3 weekends but how well we have no idea.
I am sick of the lying, denial and misery he is causing.
My empathy is gone. He needs to leave.

I do not have children of my own but I see your aching heart.

I know @Bunniekins and @Former-Member advised Fishbowl and hubby-dad that getting adult kids to move out of home can often help them grow up. Perhaps they might be able to offer you some help.

Re: Staying Safe

@Former-Member Hi Darcy, how are you? and a big Hi to @WinterSun ! It is a tough one transitioning your kidult out of home when they have a MI. I find what ever the choice pain is involved. I have a son with schizophrenia and with other problems so there is no way he will ever work, have a meaningful relationship and will most likely spend the remainder of his days living with family members or in a group home environment.

My daughter has depression and is on the spectrum so atm is still living at home but is doing a slow move out of home which might take years at this rate lol. I suppose the question to ask is how does the kidult impact upon other siblings and the marriage? My marriage ended in divorce and the sibilings were damaged from the fall out of my son's illness.

We had a good marriage too and the children were all happy and healthy until my son's schizophrenia tore the family apart. I suppose what I am saying is be very careful with your choices you make you will be no use to your son if the family unit ends up in disarray.

I hope this helps a tiny bit.

Hi Darcy, we are battling on but the lying and lack of responsibility is taking it’s toll.
Son missed psych appt and no effort to re-schedule. Was very lapse about responding to case worker. Left to his own devices doesn’t take meds.
Complains we are suffocating him. He will lay in bed all day! Easiest way to deal with that is for him to leave.
Case worker is going to help him find somewhere to live. Until then we are just waiting for him to implode.

Re: Staying Safe

Do you think a lack of insight there too @WinterSun? Are you able to do some self care things to help you cope?

Re: Staying Safe

Oh yes @Former-Member but there is only so much we can do with someone who doesn’t see the need to be compliant and thinks I’m being the problem worrying he will get sick again.
So we wait. He’s not bad enough for public hospital and not seeing his dr will no doubt see a decline.
Doing things I enjoy and plenty of meet ups with friends.
