Hi just wondering how to negotiate staying safe with an unwell son. I believe he may be manic he has created a debt, irritable and aggressive. Friends have commented to him that he is hyper and he commented himself on how he feels he is talking a lot. He likes the fact the meds have got him going ....fast but with it is snapping, anger and aggression. We attended a community health review following his week in hospital in which he presented well and despite my concerns were told to just go see psychiatrist who is currently away, for follow up. I am scared for my safety. I have had a drink sprayed around my car and me whilst driving. He has deliberately upended food and furniture on the floor, broken items and seems to think his behavior is warranted. When he us calm he agrees not to be this way but can't do it obviously when out of control.
@WinterSun So often my gut feeling has proven correct, sometimes I think there should be a study to show how intuitive carers are.

Re: Staying Safe
Unfortunately I was right and job ended after a week. This is the 4th job in six months to end in a week..It enabled me to set the CH assessment in motion and was completed at the house yesterday. Son has to have blood test to check med levels and thyroid. If ok med qty will be looked at. He is effectively quite bombed out most of the time. Dr and contact at CH were going back to discuss as team appropriate interventions that may include goal setting and in patient help to establish routine. Will know more once blood results are in. They did emphasise to son that this is temporary and to get him on track then they will step back and intervene only as requested. Son has another job. He has turned into a serial job hunter just need to get job to last longer. This one is part time and hopefully assist him in transitioning back to work. Private hospital phoned today to enquire how we were going and advised of an 8 week weekly program to assist in recovery. Will talk to Dr about this. We are trying to explain to son to take all the help he can get. Things have moved slowly through the year (been 12 months since discharge from 3 week stay) and trying to help him see that we don’t want to be in the same place in another year. Like most young adults he doesn’t see there’s a need for help. So we have little steps and even if we back track we have more avenues of assistance. Finally.

Re: Staying Safe
@WinterSun Hopefully in this process something will click with your son to enable him to start taking a bit of responsibility for the management of his condition. Perhaps the part time job might be the right thing for now.

Re: Staying Safe
Hi @Former-Member
Son has just completed 3rd shift of retail job. He has chosen part time (finally) evenings and weekends and for a chain he previously worked part time for 7 years. Fingers crossed this will last longer due to the familiarity of the job. The routine will help him move forward with the structure it gives. Blood test has been done waiting on results. Case worker and son trying to make phone contact, hopefully this week. He has psych dr appointment Tuesday that my husband will attend and discuss privacy issue and getting around it if we need to. Will need to also advise of CH help, I suppose. He couldn’t provide any other options for intervention so will be interesting to see what he thinks. At this point we will take ALL the help we can get. How is it going for you?

Re: Staying Safe
Steady here @WinterSun few ups and downs as hubby had orthopaedic surgery, pain meds have messed with him and he is slowly tapering off them under medical supervision.

@Former-Member
Son on his second weekend of work. Hoping it continues. Psydr visit lectured son about missing meds. May take a med out at next appointment in a month. Was pleased the CH will provide some assistance. I’m frazzled from a screaming and swearing incident I was subjected to the day after visit to psydr. Son missed 4 doses of meds over weekend thinks it had no affect on him. Mood was affected irritable and too on. Totally rattled me. So wrong to have to walk on eggshells to keep peace and feel powerless in our own home. Surprisingly son wanted me to go with him to first meeting with care co-ordinator aka case worker the next day. Doesn’t think he needs it but will be followed up and can contact if he needs to chat or having difficulties. Will organise a dr review bf the end of year and liase with CH drs and private dr so they are on same page. He thought the carer was nice and is age appropriate. Carer emailed me to introduce himself and let me know I can contact him I have any concerns so the partnering is reassuring. I have been told previously that CH likes family to be included for the benefit of all. As opposed to private psydr who just sights privacy when we need help. It has been a long year and a long process but some positive movements. Thanks for following me up @Former-Member I really appreciate it. Hoping you are holding up caring for me Darcy.
