The great yoga adventure

The great yoga adventure

Hi all,

So...somehow I seem to have made myself a deal with @CheerBear that we are both going to venture into the super scary world of yoga next Monday. I'm SCARED!!!! I've been trying to psych myself up to go to a class for about a year and now thanks to a pesky little care bear, it seems like it is going to happen next Monday.

I have my mat and my outfit (and thanks to @Former-Member and @Former-Member I know to wear underpants under yoga pants ). Now I just need to find some courage. Hmmm...courage...I'm sure I have some here SOMEWHERE in my shell...

Only six sleeps away. This sounds way too close. Yep, this little turtle is going to need to do some serious psyching up before next Monday!!! All encouragement is warmly welcome.

Re: The great yoga adventure

Yes @Phoenix_Rising, I was tagged by @Maggie and @Shaz51 yesterday when I mentioned I do a gym class which is a combination of Tai Chi, Yoga and Pilates. Thankyou for the welcome.

I have a long term spinal injury to my lower back which prevents a lot of regular exercise, so I am pretty limited in what I can do, even at the best of times. But I like to try to keep as active as I can. Normally I would be going to my weekly class this morning, but I am just not feeling up to it. Lack of sleep, high anxiety, back pain, and needing to be home for hubby (just home after a 3 week stay in hospital), have all contributed to me deciding not to go today. So this thread will be it for me today.

I do know there are a few yoga poses which are meant to be particularly good for lower back pain or injuries. Poses which stretch the lower back, hamstrings and hips. This includes: The Cat-Cow pose. The Downward Facing Dog pose. The Pidgeon Pose. The Supine Twist. Does everyone know all these poses? I guess you could look them up on google if you dont?

Sorry @Phoenix_Rising that you missed your class last night, and I sincerely hope you're feeling much better today? Love your positive attitude that yesterday was yesterday and that today is a new day.

Hi also to the other regulars here, ie @Ant7 @Adge. Just like a regular gym class really. Good to see you all.

Re: The great yoga adventure

Good morning everybody,

I am super enjoying being a dolphin. It is really helping me to improve my forearm stand. Maybe we should all try forearm standing next week - you'd like it @Ant7 it involves being upside down.

@Former-Member here in our quirky Forum Land yoga group we choose a pose and then aim to do that pose every day for a week. We've already done quite a few of the ones you mentioned; cat-cow, downward facing dog and pigeon pose. I haven't heard of Supine Twist. We can put that one on our list. @Adge mentioned thread-the-needle the other day so I'm wondering if we might try that one next week (I was only kidding about making a forearm stand the pose of the week...unless people would super like to try it??? ).

Here is how to do dolphin pose @Former-Member (although is sounds like you already know how to do lots of yoga poses): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9qEcTjmA78

Hey everybody, it's hump day - a good day to check in with how you have been going at being a dolphin: @soul @TheVorticon @Shaz51 @Ant7 @CheerBear @Former-Member @Anony18 @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @frog @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @Adge

Happy yoga-ing everybody.

Ps. Am I the only yogi around here that feels the need to sing the theme song from flipper every time I do the dolphin pose? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EifnM3pRLdQ

Re: The great yoga adventure

The flipper theme song sounds like a great one to go with the Dolphin pose @Phoenix_Rising

I'm happy for you to sing it...

Or I could sing along with you, except that I can't remember the song...

Re: The great yoga adventure

I haven't been yoga-ing over the past couple of weeks due to an injury. I return, only to discover you're doing a pose that my body definitely does not want to participate in. It's worse than downward dogging, believe it or not! 😛
What sort of dolphins hang out on the land anyway? I think I can only be an underwater dolphin, not a carpet dolphin 😛

Re: The great yoga adventure

Good morning everybody,

@Former-Member have you been a dolphin yet? Has the mini yogi in your house been a dolphin? Who wouldn't want to be a dolphin!

@TheVorticon ROFL so...what I'm hearing is that you don't think being a beached dolphin is going to work for you.

@Adge Here's the flipper song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EifnM3pRLdQ You only need to hear it once and it gets totally and utterly stuck in your brain...at least, it's totally stuck in my brain.

They call him flipper, flipper, faster than lightning,

No one you see,

Is smarter than he.

And we know flipper lives in a world full of wonder,

Flying there under, under the sea.

Everyone loves the king of the sea,

Ever so kind and gentle is he,

Tricks he will do when children appear,

And how they laugh when he's near.

They call him flipper, flipper, faster than lightning,

No one you see, is smarter than he,

And we know flipper lives in a world full of wonder,

Flying there under, under the sea.

Happy yoga-ing.

Re: The great yoga adventure

Good morning everybody,

Things are a bit tricky in my world at the moment and I have been extremely slack with my yoga-ing over the past few days...which is kind-of counter-productive because the past few days would have been an extra good time to be yoga-ing. I definitely notice the difference in my level of back pain when I don't do any yoga-ing for a little while. Do others find yoga-ing helpful for physical aches and pains?

Anyway, I thought we might have a go at threading needles this week. This is how you thread the needle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmFSVKTHmU8 I was quite excited to find this cool dude on youtube. It bugs me that so many of the videos are done by women with perfect yoga-shaped bodies.

So...who's going to have a go at some needle threading with me? @soul @TheVorticon @Shaz51 @Ant7 @Adge @Mazarita @CheerBear @Former-Member @Anony18 @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @frog @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member

Happy yoga-ing.

Re: The great yoga adventure

Hi @Phoenix_Rising, thanks for the latest Yoga pose. Its one I know already, so thats good. I will be threading the needle for the rest of the week now, regardless of whether I make it to my gym class or not.

I did give the Dolphin Pose a go last week as well after checking out the utube instructions.

Yes I do find yoga helpful with my crook back. Yoga and pilates are about the only exercise I can safely do really. And any time I'm unable to do it, I definitely feel myself tightening up considerably.

Hi @Phoenix_Rising I love threading the yoga needle - feels great, unlike anything to do with sewing! Wishing you well today ...
