The great yoga adventure

The great yoga adventure

Hi all,

So...somehow I seem to have made myself a deal with @CheerBear that we are both going to venture into the super scary world of yoga next Monday. I'm SCARED!!!! I've been trying to psych myself up to go to a class for about a year and now thanks to a pesky little care bear, it seems like it is going to happen next Monday.

I have my mat and my outfit (and thanks to @Former-Member and @Former-Member I know to wear underpants under yoga pants ). Now I just need to find some courage. Hmmm...courage...I'm sure I have some here SOMEWHERE in my shell...

Only six sleeps away. This sounds way too close. Yep, this little turtle is going to need to do some serious psyching up before next Monday!!! All encouragement is warmly welcome.

@Former-Member - that’s is so beautiful that you are sharing yoga with your kids. It made me feel all warm inside.

Nit sure about the Plough Pose @Phoenix_Rising. I feel that attendance here has dropped off and that Pose might not be a real crowd puller. I’ll have a think and get back to you. We aren’t all hyper bendy like you 😆🤸🏻‍♀️

Tonight I did an active Vinyasa Class but with my favourite instructor so I really enjoyed it. As my Meditation workshop follows 15 minutes afterwards, I took the opportunity to shoulderstand. The first time I did it, I counted to 20. Each subsequent time, I add another 10 seconds.

Good to see @TheVorticon and @Adge practising yoga. Who else might be as well? Don’t be shy.

Re: The great yoga adventure

@soulI'm not hyper-bendy. I'm very inflexible, especially with back-bends - after my 3 major bowel surgeries.

The scar is almost 30cm long up my middle, & very thick - plus I cannot retract (or squeeze in) my tummy muscles anymore, because the surgeries left me with a permanent bulge (abdominal muscle damage).

Maybe lots of yoga will eventually help, although it's taking me several years (if that's the case)...

I did a Yin class today at my yoga studio. Prior to the session starting, I did the shoulder stand. Handy to have the mat all rolled out and in the yoga frame of mind. I’m up to holding it for the count of 50 now.

Hope you are all diligently practising too.

Re: The great yoga adventure

Good evening everybody, I have done a shoulder stand today, have you?

@TheVorticon, wow, what you described about naturally doing shoulder stands sounds SO much like me!!! I'm not sure if I've told you this, but I don't own a couch. As in, I moved out of the home of my family of origin in 1997, lived on my own ever since, and never quite got around to buying a couch. People seem to assume it is a poverty thing, but it really isn't. I simply like sitting on the floor. So for my whole adult life I've been doing exactly what you describe doing as a kid, which is how it has come about that I seem to have been doing yoga forever without knowing I was doing yoga.

@Former-Member That is SO SUPER cool that you and your two kids did a shoulder stand together. I am super excited to think we have a couple of new minature yogis in our group. Hey @CheerBear, would your LF like to join our group???

@soul Hmmm...so what pose do you think we should do next week? I totally hear you about scaring people away with a tricky pose, but last week we did the easiest pose on the planet and put everyone to sleep or something. Does anyone have any suggestions for next week's pose??? What might work for you @Adge???

Hmmm...I wonder where all those slack moderators are. Hey @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member have you been yoga-ing??? I wonder who is around right now. I think everybody in the helpcentre needs to do a shoulder stand right now...mostly because that makes for a super funny picture in my brain.

I will be doing a shoulder stand again tomorrow. I super hope you will too.

Happy yoga-ing.

Awww that's so cool @Former-Member! Mine mostly just laugh at me when I play yoga, but sometimes middle and little join in. So I will add another two too @Phoenix_Rising (and not even try with big)!

I haven't been here for a little while, although I am still playing along. Still a week and a half until my class goes back :S

Re: The great yoga adventure

You have a point there @Phoenix_Rising about equating the difficulty of the Pose with attendance. Do you think the yogis and yoginis are still all asleep? After herding goats all day, they may be exhausted.

Two other popular poses are the Chair Pose (perhaps everyone does that briefly before they sit down for a meal ) and the Forward Fold where you just flop over. In class we usually incorporate the latter with a half lift then fold over sometime dangling our arms.

Re: The great yoga adventure

The Chair pose is a good one @soul - it's sort of easy, yet really gives your muscles a work-out.

The forward fold is a really good one too...

I'm not about to suggest the downward dog, probably the most over-used yoga pose

Easy to remember, but I hate it (sorry). I counted 10 downward dogs (we did) in one class...

I would suggest the Bridge pose, but we've already done that one.

Re: The great yoga adventure

We have done downward dog @Adge. I don’t mind it now. It used to be a struggle but my arms have really strengthened and I can hold that pose for quite some time now. Likewise with planks.

We’ll see what @Phoenix_Rising thinks. She’s the wonderful instigator of this thread and puts together the instructions. Really appreciate her efforts.
