The great yoga adventure

The great yoga adventure

Hi all,

So...somehow I seem to have made myself a deal with @CheerBear that we are both going to venture into the super scary world of yoga next Monday. I'm SCARED!!!! I've been trying to psych myself up to go to a class for about a year and now thanks to a pesky little care bear, it seems like it is going to happen next Monday.

I have my mat and my outfit (and thanks to @Former-Member and @Former-Member I know to wear underpants under yoga pants ). Now I just need to find some courage. Hmmm...courage...I'm sure I have some here SOMEWHERE in my shell...

Only six sleeps away. This sounds way too close. Yep, this little turtle is going to need to do some serious psyching up before next Monday!!! All encouragement is warmly welcome.

Re: The great yoga adventure

Alright safety talk acknowledged @Phoenix_Rising and @soul 😉 No eagling or treeing on the bed. I'm pretty sure I can be childish on the bed. Although that may raise it's own problems if I start childishly jumping instead of childish yoga-ing.

Re: The great yoga adventure

Hi @Phoenix_Rising and everyone, yesterday I did my fifth of seven tree poses, the challenge I have set myself since I am behind on the group challenge. But I think I shall also start doing the child pose tomorrow as well. Is that the one where you kneel on the floor and put your head down, with arms sort of behind and on the floor? I have only been to one yoga class in my life and that one was about 20 years ago. I also have to admit I haven't done my yoga barefoot yet. I wear shoes that are like ballet slippers and I have been happily yoga-ing in them. They support my arthritic feet better, though I still wobble, even on the basic form of tree pose. I also have difficulty breathing naturally at the same time as holding even the tree pose. I tend to want to hold my breath. I'm hoping the more advanced yogis here might have some tips.

Cheering for you all, doing so well.

Re: The great yoga adventure

Good morning everybody. Yay, it is be-a-child week here in this most atypical of yoga groups.

@TheVorticon you will be delighted to know that child's pose is one that you can safely do on your bed. No jumping on the bed though! Giggle...you reminded me how much my mum used to hate me doing that!

@Mazarita You are correct in your description of child's pose. Although it seems there are two versions and from what I can tell, the other version is called "extended child's pose". The way you described it is what I've always known child's pose to be, but we do it differently in the class I go to. The video I found demonstrates both ways, which I thought was pretty cool. It is super awesome that you have tree-ed five times. Wow, so close to your goal of seven trees!!! I totally get what you are saying about holding your breath while yoga-ing. I notice that I do that too in some poses. I also notice the same thing when I'm playing my violin. I know it's because I'm concentrating so hard, I simply forget to breathe. I know that with yoga, focusing on your breathing is more important than how well you do the pose. I think maintaining that focus on the breath takes a lot of practice and I sure as heck am not great at it yet.

You mentioned seeking guidance from advanced yogis. Do we have any advanced yogis in this group? I'm thinking that perhaps @Ant7 and @Adge may have been going to classes longer than anyone, although given @soul goes most days, she may have actually done the most classes!

Advanced yogis, calling all advanced yogis, are there any advanced yogis anywhere in Forum Land???

@soul I like your idea of doing a sweep around Forum Land to hunt out potential yogis. I nominate you to do that. Maybe you could be the marketing manager for our yoga group, given that we've sacked @Former-Member. I wonder if @Former-Member is into yoga. I know @Former-Member, @Former-Member, @Former-Member and @Former-Member are - they just need a bit of nagging encouragement to actually get yoga-ing.

Anyway, here is how to do child's pose: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwDVQPiQpHQ

I am certainly looking forward to being a child every day this week...you know...as opposed to being the very mature adult that I am the rest of the time. Just on that note, I have to ask, am I the only person who gets a picture of Yogi Bear in their brain every single time someone says the word "yogi"? I'm sure I'm not. Happy yoga-ing everybody.

Re: The great yoga adventure

I'll try to round up some more yogis or wanna be yogis @Phoenix_Rising.

Seeing that yoga-ing slackened off a bit last week perhaps due to lack of extrinsic rewards, perhaps we can offer a little incentive to build it up again.

I was thinking maybe one of these singlets for people who do the Child Pose at least five times.

Re: The great yoga adventure

I'm doing a yoga retreat in 2 weeks time.

I've never done one before. I'm on the bus to Albany right now for 2 days.

Yes @soul may have done the most yoga classes. I've been doing classes twice a week for about 6 years.

I'vestill got a long way to go with getting flexible...

Don't think I could get off the floor let alone untangle myself.

But I keep checking in for inspiration. What's the child pose again. Cheering you on 👍

Re: The great yoga adventure

If you've been going to yoga classes for six years - you've got it all over me @Adge. I'm a fairly new convert. It's just that I go often now.

I'll be very interested to hear how the yoga retreat goes. I've been looking at some overseas.

A walking thread sounds like a great idea @Maggie. I love walking. Might get something up tonight
