The great yoga adventure

The great yoga adventure

Hi all,

So...somehow I seem to have made myself a deal with @CheerBear that we are both going to venture into the super scary world of yoga next Monday. I'm SCARED!!!! I've been trying to psych myself up to go to a class for about a year and now thanks to a pesky little care bear, it seems like it is going to happen next Monday.

I have my mat and my outfit (and thanks to @Former-Member and @Former-Member I know to wear underpants under yoga pants ). Now I just need to find some courage. Hmmm...courage...I'm sure I have some here SOMEWHERE in my shell...

Only six sleeps away. This sounds way too close. Yep, this little turtle is going to need to do some serious psyching up before next Monday!!! All encouragement is warmly welcome.

Re: The great yoga adventure

Had a break from yoga yesterday. Went six times last week so that's not bad. This morning I floated in a salt water tank. That was relaxing. I had never done that before. I'll be back rolling out the mat this afternoon with a Yin session at the studio.

Are we set to do a new pose this week @Phoenix_Rising?

Wow! 6 days @soul ✔ ❤
That's great. Good on you.
Glad you enjoyed the salt water tank.

I do a little yoga/pilates most days.
Started boxing at home yesterday 😂
Bought gloves, punching thingy from ALDI yesterday .
Quite sore, upper back and shoulders from it.

Thanks @Former-Member. All the best with the boxing. That's a good workout especially for the arms.

Re: The great yoga adventure

Good evening everybody, I have warriored today, have you???

I have a cold and yesterday I didn't warrior. I still feel achy and yuck today but I made a super effort to warrior anyway and guess what? I felt better for doing it!

@Faith-and-Hope you mentioned on Friday that you were currently being a tree. Does that mean you were posting while being a tree. That would SUPER impress me.

@Ant7 Here's hoping for being less under the weather in the coming week!

@TheVorticon and @Maggie Yay for being warriors yesterday!!!! I wonder if you did a repeat today?

@CheerBear have you warriored today???

@soul You make me smile every time you mention you've been to another class. I'm super happy that you are enjoying the yoga adventure so much.

Your adventure of floating in a salt water tank sounds really interesting. Is it like a little pool or does it have a lid such that you are enclosed? Do you move around and bump into the sides? Does it feel like you are floating in air? I am intrigued.

I love that you checked out the candles in your candlelit class! That is definitely something I would do too. The situation you describe about people leaving right after class is the same at the studio I go to. I have to say, this suits me just fine. I haven't said a word to anyone other than the instructor (and since the first class, I've only said hi and bye to her). Some people chat but I get the sense they are friends who come together. I wonder if it's something to do with it being specifically a yoga studio rather than a class at a gym or a community centre or something??? I really have no idea, but I'm wondering if those sorts of settings may be more social whereas the yoga studios focus more on the idea that it is "just you and your mat."

I like that website that you put the link to. I have super searched for the peeing dog pose and I just can't find a how-to video that feels ok to me. I have found some on youtube, but they all have those annoyingly tonned semi-naked women demonstrating the pose and there's something about that, that feels icky to me. I think you are right that it is a variation on the table top pose. Some of the videos I've looked at are titled "fire hydrant pose"...which I take to be a more euphamistic way of saying peeing dog pose.

So...I was wondering if you want to make downward dog the pose for the coming week? I think you mentioned that you do that a lot in class? So do we. A couple of times when we've done it, the instructor has come and corrected my posture...but then when I go to do it again I can't quite remember what she corrected, so I think I need to practice it.

What do we think fellow yogis? Shall we make downward dog the pose for the week???

Re: The great yoga adventure

@Phoenix_Rising I did warriorer to day still quit ill but I did feelbetter for having done it. Now downward dog for this week sounds good though I am worried about my abbreviation so like saying im doung doggy lol or saying im dogging or do I just have my mind in the gutter

Re: The great yoga adventure

@Ant7 Giggle. The same thought regarding abbreviating the downward dog pose crossed my mind too. Indeed, I was sitting here contemplating whether I should suggest it because of this very issue. However it IS one of the most basic yoga poses so I guess we will just have to navigate the abbreviation dilemma in our most grown-up way (says I who really wanted to be a peeing dog every day).

Re: The great yoga adventure

Yep @Phoenix_Rising .... but that doesn't mean I was treeing well ..... rather wobbly acrually ..... like a wind-blown tree with an iPhone caught in its branches probably .....

Re: The great yoga adventure

You have my vote for downward dog @Phoenix_Rising. It is a very common yoga pose; something we do every session and there are quite a few adaptations - lifting legs straight or with knees bent, heels down or up. We did a lot of downward dog tonight at my Yin class. The music was a bit weird. They had a guy singing Adele songs. I found it a bit distracting and I was just waiting for someone to belt out -

"Never mind I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
Don't forget me I beg, I'll remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead…"

I didn't have my usual yoga mat. I took along a thicker one I had. Bad move as it made a noise whenever I placed my hands down on as it was too smooth a surface and my hands kind of stuck a bit. I agree that yoga classes seem to be about "you and your mat." It's probably something true yogis do in complete silence except at classes the instructor needs to speak.

There were two options for the salt float. You could use an open tub which can actually accommodate two people or the capsule. I was feeling daring so I went for the capsule. Even with that, you can slide the door open as much as you like and there is a light that you can have on. I chose to go all out - dark and closed in. There was plenty of ventilation so you didn't feel as if you couldn't breathe.

You don't actually bob around. The water is very supportive. You can move but there is plenty of room. Then again, I'm not a very big or tall person. I certainly didn't bang up against the walls. They also had lovely herbal tea - hot and cold to drink afterwards.

Re: The great yoga adventure

Good afternoon everybody,

So...warrior week has passed and today marks the beginning of a new do-a-yoga-pose-every-day-for-a-week super challenge. This week let's try the downward facing dog pose (also known as Adho Mukha Svanasana). This is one of the most common poses in a class so I figure it is a good one to practice. Here's how to do it: https://www.doyogawithme.com/content/downward-facing-dog-pose The cool thing about this video is that it also describes child's pose - yay, two for the price of one.

Now, I was thinking...there seem to be a few self-confessed couch potatoes among us. I have a solution for this! If you have misplaced your mojo and can't get off the couch, you can still join in the great yoga adventure. Here's a challenge just for you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mc-38vuwE1Y Ok, so technically you should probably be lying on the floor rather than the couch...but I think lying on the couch would be acceptable.

@Faith-and-Hope I'm not entirely sure about you using your iphone while yoga-ing. I'm no expert, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the aim of the game is to be focusing fully on your breathing and being present in your body while yoga-ing.

@soul Someone singing Adele songs does not sound like my idea of a relaxing yoga class! I super like the calm music. I actually have some playing right now. Your salt float sounds super cool. The idea of being totally enclosed doesn't appeal to me, but it is still something I am very curious about.

So...who do I need to nag encourage to do some yoga-ing this week. Let's see... @Ant7 @Maggie @CheerBear @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @TheVorticon @Mazarita @Shaz51 @lovemyboys @Former-Member
