anxiety

anxiety

I have big things happening over the next few weeks and they terrify me. I'm going to court to testify against my ex husband who was abusive. Its been two years since he was arrested and i just want this over iwth now but i have no idea how to get through this. Ive been feeling so anxious over the last week and its building up. I have a constant headache now and getting chest pains which i know is just the anxiety but still scares me. I am doing breathing exercises when ever i notice it getting out of control, i've been trying to do more exercise when i feel like i just want to curl up in a ball, and im doing the muscle relaxation strategy thing once a day (it was suggested i do it minimum of 2 a day, but can't until i put the kids to bed!!). all of these things help to relieve things from an 8/9 out of ten to maybe a five out of ten for a while, but the anxiety feels like its always there. i'm horrified at the thought of telling so many people the specifics of what happened, but more terrified at how they are going to question me to discredit me. There are a few things from my teenage years that i did that im so ashamed of that are going to be brought up and will probably sound terrible and theres a very low chance of him being convicted but i have to do this to try and keep my kids safe 😞

Has anyone else had a similar time that they've been terrified of something thats coming up, how did you cope, what did you do to cope?

Re: anxiety

@Former-MemberYou are sounding aware, responsible and sensitive to what is going on and that takes STRENGTH, Do you have anyone going in with you. Are the kids in a court babysitter or at kindy? Its huge what you are doing so of course your feelings are intense.

They say that process is more important. Andre Agassi used to say it doesnt matter if he wins or loses, he just gives each shot his best shot.

Good luck.Beautiful Cowgirl

waiting waiting waiting at home still... they're calling me when i need to go in because of all the legal arguments that go first etc so its just panic, breathe. wait, panic, breathe wait.. i just want to get in and start... i know that i always cope better once things are going than all this thinking about it. i have a bag with a colouring book in it and a book to read and water and nuts to take with me. i've been for a walk this morning. i bought myself an elephant teeddy because elephants are my favourite but i dont think i'll take it with me, the security guards check through you bag at the door lol. breathe!

Re: anxiety

Hi @Former-Member,

You are doing lots of good things and showing strength and resilience. Another 'micro-exercise' I do sometimes is to just mentally check in on my body and see if I can feel where the tension is mainly being held (for me it's often around my neck, shoulders and chest). Then consciously release the physical tension - taking a deep breath in and breathing the tension out while letting muscles release. I usually do this while sitting. Sending well wishes.

Re: anxiety

Well done @Former-Member ... you don't need to worry at all about your shaky voice. Majistrates are usually very intelligent people who can tell straight away the difference between complete honest human nature and an act. It will add to the honesty and credabiliity of your testimony.

Unfortunately I have been through the experience of being on the stand before, I know what you are going through, It is definately a very harrowing experience. You will get through though and I know you will be stronger for it.

I wanted to post before you had to testify because I was going to get you to do something, you can do it for the cross examination if you like.

Have a look around you right now and find a pocket sized "trinket", can be anything, anything at all as long as it fits in your pocket or hand if you don't have a pocket.

On the morning of your next appearance, hold it and close your hand and think of all the friends and support that you have here and keep it on you. When/if things get tough, think of it, feel it if you can and that support and love will be with you.

If you have no idea on what to use, open a word document and write down all the names of your friends here, along with all the positives reasons why you are doing what you are doing, then save it to a USB memory stick and use it as your positive little trinket.

I have a question for you, is the prosecutor aware of your MI?

You're doing well lj keep it up!
