Caring for a wife with Borderline Personality Disorder- Sequel to Diary of wife’s hospital stay - holding it together for our family.

Caring for a wife with Borderline Personality Disorder- Sequel to Diary of wife’s hospital stay - holding it together for our family.

This discussion is a follow on from my previous thread Diary of wife’s hospital stay - holding it together for our family, a thread I started when my wife was admitted to hospital for the third time in 6 months and when everything around me seemed to be falling apart. It was a space where I could vent and express my emotions and helped me to process a particularly difficult time not only in my own life but for our family and helped me to hold myself together in order to support my family. For that I am most grateful.

Those of you who were following our journey will know that on my darlings return home I have been encouraged by my councillor to implement some loving boundaries, (lovingly implemented guidelines, not as rules to be enforced), and some self-care for myself.

Now that my darling is home the purpose of this new thread is to document our journey of healing and implementing new boundaries and commitment to self-care, not only so that I can have a visual plan for myself (a bit of self-accountability to follow through with plans in place) but in the hope that it may help others processing similar trials. It will also be an opportunity to track our progress over time.

We are holding off taking him to any schools before we have definate choices to make @Faith-and-Hope, not knowing for sure is not good for his emotional state. He is anxious already if we started talking maybe's and visitng places he may not go to he could possibly fall apart.

She didnt see students getting disoriented as being a problem at all, recons they manage.. just fine (Must walk around with her eyes closed for the first term) . This is a special ed trained teacher who is the head of the assisted learning unit or what ever they call it.

It might simply be that he "learns the ropes" then @Determined ....

I have no doubt he would work it out eventually @Faith-and-Hope its the bit in between and level of support in that transition that concerns me . I dont think he could follow a time table or a map at this early stage.

What his current school does as soon as they know what school they are going to is do the best they can to prepare them for the transition.

Just thinking about the timetables and maps I just had a brainwave about how to create some maps in colour to make it easy for him. Can ask if we or someoone can do a walk around with him on day 1 . (If he ends up at that school).

May also be able to use coloured chalk on the ground to match the colours on the map to indicate the path to follow and when to turn a corner.

LoL @Faith-and-Hope, not sure the school would agree with that solution

I am trying to remain positive that his enrolment at special school will be accepted and it will not be a problem.

Have to put in enrolment forms for ine other school (the school whos catchment we fall in) by Friday afternoon but been putting it off in the hope that special school may call in the mean time. Dont even want to think about him having to go to that school.

@Determined - by what you're telling us, I don't get a good vibe about the Head of Special Education Services at that school. If they don't have basis systems in place to ensure that students are catered for appropriately that to me would be a big warning signal.

The most important thing is that S1 is happy in the environment in which he is being educated and that the programs are catering for his individual needs. If he's not happy, neither will you or your Darling be and the last thing you all need is more stress.

How do you think he fits in with the clientele at the Special School? There can be quite a range of abilities. Its also imperative that he is challenged to do the best he can. Sometimes these schools have programs associated with the local high school as well as TAFE and industries within the community.

@soul I agree, We are going to try and catch up with the head of seu at his current school when school resumes next term to discuss. We are aware there are children from his class last year who have transitioned well. My biggest concern with special school is that I want him to be challenged to be the best he can be. I worry will special school be too limiting for him. Someone we know who works at the special school thinks he will thrive there. My concern with the main stream school is that even in a supported position if he is not comfortable in his environment he will fall apart. Before he went from main stream class to the seu where he is now he was constantly talking about being useless and wanting to die. Particually rather die than go back to school. I dont ever want to go back to that... ever... 😕 I was hoping to get kore info about special school by now but left my run too late to ask, will have to wait till after he is accepted now to get a tour and more detail.

That's really sad that your son felt that way @Determined. His mental health is the most important thing and should be given priority when choosing his educational placement. Two weeks holiday now. Rest, recuperate, catch up on stuff. Then after the term starts, you can make further inquiries.
