Caring for a wife with Borderline Personality Disorder- Sequel to Diary of wife’s hospital stay - holding it together for our family.

This discussion is a follow on from my previous thread Diary of wife’s hospital stay - holding it together for our family, a thread I started when my wife was admitted to hospital for the third time in 6 months and when everything around me seemed to be falling apart. It was a space where I could vent and express my emotions and helped me to process a particularly difficult time not only in my own life but for our family and helped me to hold myself together in order to support my family. For that I am most grateful.

Those of you who were following our journey will know that on my darlings return home I have been encouraged by my councillor to implement some loving boundaries, (lovingly implemented guidelines, not as rules to be enforced), and some self-care for myself.

Now that my darling is home the purpose of this new thread is to document our journey of healing and implementing new boundaries and commitment to self-care, not only so that I can have a visual plan for myself (a bit of self-accountability to follow through with plans in place) but in the hope that it may help others processing similar trials. It will also be an opportunity to track our progress over time.

Thanks @Former-Member @Faith-and-Hope @soul

Just had a meeting with one of the local high schools that we have applied for enrollment for S1 to attend, I have been anxious and reluctant to consider special school for him to date but now I really hope that his application to special school is successful. Trying to intergrate him into the main stream school is not going to be easy based on this morning tour 😔

While my darling is trying hard the fear and anxiety about the unknown is really debilitating for her at the moment. It will be 5 or 6 weeks before we have any answers.

Is there an ed. support unit available to you @Determined ? That involves a degree of intergration along with special needs classrooms for extra curricular support subjects .....

eg. Intergration for Science, PE, Health, etc .... extra support for Maths and English.

Had these sort of educational issues with our D2.

There is differentiated curriculum @Faith-and-Hope but within the main stream class so no special needs classroom. Not sure how that works and the school rep didn't elaborate. I didnt want to sound like a cracked record so let it go.

My biggest concern is his ability to navigate his way between classes. Their model is to have a different group of students for every class. I can understand the benifit for full functioning children but for our little man this will not be good.

Agree @Determined that appropriate schooling for your son is much more than the academics. High School is a mini version of society and can be even more intense. If he is struggling with socialisation and navigating the unknown, it can be a scary and unsettling thing. Bullying can be rampant at some of these places, not saying that this will be the case.

It's good that you visited the school, spoke with the staff and got a feel for the place. Are there other parents who have kids with special needs that you might be able to consult as you endeavour to make this all important decision?

What about his friends? Does S1 have some close mates that he would want to make that transition with? There are a lot of things to consider and along with all the other stuff going on with your family, it makes for a stressful time.

Thinking of you.

They may have care aids available to assist with that @Determined. I assume you have flagged it, or will do .....

@soul he has friends from last year who are at the school and friends from this year who are hoping to go to that school but they would not be in the same class. The school splits them up in order to 'socialise' them. But at least they would there for lunch breaks. Not sure how I could contact parents of children who went across this year? Could ask current school to pass my details on possibly.

@Faith-and-Hope I did ask about an aid helping students from room to room at leadt in the early stages (I would doubt our son is the only one who would have difficulty with this) and the answer was no. Asked about a buddy system where students were paired up to help each other and she just looked at me funny and moved on,... took that as a no also.

Even MIL has concerns, she told me she woke up in the middle of the night with a vision of him sitting at the bottom of some stairs crying because he was lost.

Has she met your son yet @Determined ?

Can you ask what other students do when they become disoriented ?
