Caring for a wife with Borderline Personality Disorder- Sequel to Diary of wife’s hospital stay - holding it together for our family.

This discussion is a follow on from my previous thread Diary of wife’s hospital stay - holding it together for our family, a thread I started when my wife was admitted to hospital for the third time in 6 months and when everything around me seemed to be falling apart. It was a space where I could vent and express my emotions and helped me to process a particularly difficult time not only in my own life but for our family and helped me to hold myself together in order to support my family. For that I am most grateful.

Those of you who were following our journey will know that on my darlings return home I have been encouraged by my councillor to implement some loving boundaries, (lovingly implemented guidelines, not as rules to be enforced), and some self-care for myself.

Now that my darling is home the purpose of this new thread is to document our journey of healing and implementing new boundaries and commitment to self-care, not only so that I can have a visual plan for myself (a bit of self-accountability to follow through with plans in place) but in the hope that it may help others processing similar trials. It will also be an opportunity to track our progress over time.

He has an upcoming Peadiatric appointment where I was going to request a supporting letter. Got an email from the head of SEU at his current school this morning saying she had by chance bumped into his pead doc at a confrence last night. She was able to discuss his educational requirements and Dr is going to draft a supporting letter. This is great as they were able to discuss specific requirements far better than I could so the letter will be more effective.

Very promising news @Determined. Progress on that front must be a good feeling.

I reckon the Christian school would be the better option in terms of pastoral care should there be any ongoing issues concerning your Darling's mental health and its effects Determined

That's why the Christian school was initially our first choice @soul however after talking with the HOD for SEU and guidance officer at his current school yesterday morning I now feel that the special school will be better placed to set him up for independence post school or as close to independence as we can achieve. Some tough decisions to be made.... first we need to get some acceptance letters though 😞

He does have access to some amazing pastoral care within our church and I have been told the Chappy at the special school is pretty special to (pun intended 🙂 ). and yes we are lucky enough to have chaplans in some of our state schools where we are .

it is a case of my heart telling me he would be better in the Christian school, he would definitely thrive in the class environment that is on offer there but again this is subject to our application being accepted which is dependant on funding and available resources as he is classified high needs... and my head telling me the special school (should our application be successful) will be better for him in the long term.

All of the unknowns are having a significant impact on my darlings wel-beining at the moment 😞

I am concerned at the moment that if things don't improve over the weekend my darling may end up back in hospital. 😞 we have had the discussion during the day over the phone as I have been at work and now at youth group with our boys but she has conceded that she was premature in demanding to be let go home early from hospital as she is definitely not coping.

I am drained and don't know what to do. Was going to phone someone from our church earlier to talk but don't know where to start so have put it in the too hard basket. Will see what tomorrow brings.

Had a discussion with my mum this afternoon and told her we cant be looking after her animals any time in the near future. Felt so bad that it seemed to stress her out that I cant do it. That is also wearing me out because I feel obligated to help her. She actually has one of our dogs and a litter of pups at the moment. however I was going to have the dog aborted and fixed but she wanted a pup and said she would take care of it so that isnt even my problem really. But still I feel it is.

off to get the cherrubs now and go home and organise dinner for my darling.

Seems like you're still searching for the light at the end of the tunnel @Determined. I can't imagine how frustrating it must be for you. You get a glimmer of hope and the next moment, things look as though they can going to come tumbling down in a heap again, you included.

I thought that the hospital stay was quite brief. You would know if there had been an improvement or not or whether there has been a relapse. I guess it may have been wishful thinking on everyone's part.

It's good that you have been able to tell your mother that you aren't in a position to take care of all the animals at this time. You have enough on your plate. I hope she understands. I'm really bad at saying no to requests.

With regards to the school for S2, I'm sure you will be visiting each venue and talking to the staff who will be involved in your son's education and gauge which is the better placement. Of course it all depends on where he is eligible to attend in the first place.

I hope the weekend improves and you all manage as best you can.

I thought the stay in hospital was far to brief @soul
I just wish she could have had a proper break and rest while she had the opportunity but she was so homesick (and worried about all that I was doing wrong around the house) and has an amazing ability to put on a good front for a short while so convinced the doc she was good to go. Even the nurses were amazed she was going home so soon .

I should not be supprised that the crash arrived so soon but I was hopeful the rebound to wellness would be longer lasting than what it was.

Such is the nature of the condition I guess 😩 Manipulation to get what is wanted. Pity there wasn't a definitive way to see through it and deal with it.
