Hi @outlander,
I am very open with my GP about my thoughts of suicide. Health professionals aren't psychic - they can't know stuff if we don't tell them. Anyone with any vague knowledge of BPD knows that chronic suicidal ideation is a key feature of it. Thus it would be very odd for a health professional to send someone with BPD off to hospital just for having thoughts of suicide. I guess with the SH it depends on the nature of that as to how the GP might react. However, it comes down to the basic question of whether you want help/support or not. Again, the GP isn't psychic so he/she can't help you with something they don't know about.

I think you should be honest and open with your GP. He/She will most likely do a mental health risk assessment and try to be as honest as you can with it. If you can reassure your safety and risk, then it is unlikely they will send you to the hospital. If you cannot assure your own safety and think you are at risk of serious harm to yourself, then I think they have a duty of care to have you assessed at the hospital.

i know i should tell her and in a way i want to tell her but im worried becasue the last time i said i was having suicidal thoughts and self harming she sent me straight to hospital.
im no longer at that point- that god for that! it was exhausting
the suicidal thoughts are always with me but i told her they arent always there. i ahvent been having any. i didnt want to dissapoint her.
but im not a risk now. i dont have plans and if the thoughts arise again i dont intent to act on anything.

@outlander My understanding of last time was that you were in signficant crisis and had severely SHd. That is quite different to simply telling someone you have thoughts of suicide. I have no idea what you mean about "disappointing" your GP. She is a health professional. Your goal in seeing her is to get support, not to make her proud or avoid disappointing her. Anyway, I'm sure you will make the decision that is best for you. You are the expert on your life. You know what you need. ![]()
