Grief & loss - may be triggering

Grief & loss - may be triggering

@ lapses
Early last year 2016 my Dad died after a long painful illness (cancer), which he had been fighting for 6 years.

He survived that long only because of continuous treatments, otherwise he would have been gone in 6 months (they said).

My relationship with him had been somewhat distant at times - due my living in a different state from my entire family for the past 22 years.

Also due to my tumultuous upbringing & family background - which is why I could not stay in the city where I grew up, & chose to live here (3000 kilometres away) instead.

Also wanting to start anew 22 years ago, with needs for greater independence.

Yet those hopes to start a family of my own have never been realized. My marriage ended abruptly, & took my cherished plans & hopes for the future with it.

Then I was confronted with the memories of my SA only 3 months after the end of my marriage - which again turned my life upside-down. My gender identity was shaken, & I no longer felt secure with the sense of identity that I once had.

Followed by a severe health emergency - with 2 emergency bowel surgeries, a stoma & bag for 6 months.

Then a 3rd major bowel surgery to try to put things back together. I almost died twice in hospital they told me.

My siblings & I had found Dad to be emotionally distant & scary right into our adult lives - yet in the last few years we found him to be a kind, intelligent & very caring man. So it was so much harder to lose him.

Due to the stress of having to find a new job, having complex PTSD, & not coping well with the conditions of this occupation (carer) - I've been unable to effectively come to terms with my grief & loss.

It seems that my grief has been largely on hold for the past 14 months since Dad died. I don't feel in touch with it, despite my best efforts to.

I see a psychologist, yet we've been unable to do grief work, or help me to come to terms with the loss of my Dad.

I've remembered very little about him in the past year, which makes it harder - as I have so few memories to draw upon.

Yes @Adge, we do need to acknowledge our own achievements (be our own nest friend). I'm washed out & didn't make it to church. They wonder why people like us

- alone

- trauma childhood (scarred self)

- crap professional colleges

- toxic family

- depression

They wonder why we have SI. Well, i'm presuming you do sometimez?? How do you deal with it?

What's SI @Former-Member?

If it means self-injury or self-harm, no I've never done that.

That's maybe because of my dissociating (automatic), without even realising it, psych thinks.

My psych said that I'm rare (with my complex trauma background & CPTSD) - to have no self-harm or suicidal attempts (or tendencies). Nearly all people from long-term trauma backgrounds do, apparently.

That's a good list, yes I can relate to all of those.

SI = suicidal ideation - you don't get that? That is unusual. You must have a placid nature. Still difficult though.

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

@Former-MemberNo I didn't know that SI meant suicidal, I had no idea.

I may frequently feel that life is too painful & utterly meaningless (except to suffer), but I don't act on that.

According to Psych, that's where the dissociation comes in (from extreme & prolonged trauma) - which shuts down, & blanks feelings (& clear thinking) out.

Because she said that most (or many) people with similar prolonged trauma like me, & such intense painful feelings - are not alive to tell the tale.

They did have SI, & were successful in their attempts...

That's why apparently I'm somewhat rare, according to her.

Although I feel very non-functional, with no sense of pride or achievement for that.

When I was a teenager, yes (several attempts) - None of which was ever even noticed by my parents.

Mum & Dad continued to be totally unaware, even when I was ill as a result.

Which taught me that I am invisible, or that I did not exist, or did not matter at all (at least to them).

Thankfully not successful attempts.

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Well @Adge, i glad you didnt suceed & still here. You have so much to offer the world. When we expect not to be apprecoated / notices (early programming) then thats often all we see. We do need to humbly learn to blow our own trumpet. Give to ourself what our parents couldn't.

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Thanks so much @Former-Member You too.

Yes the trumpet-blowers get all the attention & credit in life - even for someone else's achievements (eg mine).

I've tried so hard to do that (honestly of course).

Yet they got the job (interview) when I was much better qualified, with 12 year's experience in horticulture.

Simply because I don't blow my own trumpet.

3 Java finches, 3 Zebra finches & 1 Canary - all gone today (found, in 2 separate aviaries).

I find it hard enough when 1 bird dies, but 7 all at once is too much to stomach....

The Javas are hard to replace (hard to get), even though not expensive.

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Hello dear @Adge and dear @Former-Member

So sorry to hear about the loss of your birds....together would be adding to the shock..

allow yourself to grieve without questioning how you do...we all have our own way...there is no answer..

it is within you....just letting yoursel breathe and be...

adge I have no words of wisdom to offer...no magic wand...

I can give you my unconditional caring without hesitation....

I have noticed for some time your likes. I am unsure if I have already thanked you or not..No matter you are well worth thanking again..

I love the fact that yourself and neighbour are taking it in turns visiting..

That takes a special person.....yes you...

are you interested in board games or cards? You might be able to start or join a group at your library or local community centre..

If your neighbour is interested you might find another two people and play as pairs....

@Former-Member I am sorry that I have not read your thread for awhile either..I am hoping that life has settled as much as it can within your circumstances...you are such a caring, loving family member...being there for your dad....your brother visiting with hand picked roses...bless him... Worrying about your other brother I understand too..I hope that somewhere in the day there is some purely lapses time....?

what are you doing for you?

💚♥️💜🌹🌷🌾💐🌸🌻
