Mum (mil mum) could just go @soul but dad would want to to go also and would be hurt if he was told no. Will try talking to her about it in the morning.

That's a good idea. Please don't feel bad about your decision. It's for the best.

Children don't need to see me a blubbering mess @soul it would only upset them and I would feel worse if that is even possible.
Thankfully they are in bed asleep.

At the end of the day @Determined, you want your Darling to get better as quickly and as effectively as possible. This is just a little bump in the road. It's not turning back, it's just navigating gently over it.

What can you do to distract you? How about a movie? Read a book? Dare I say it - do that report? You have to keep your mind active otherwise you will feel this sorrow even worse. Are you sad because she isn't coming home this weekend? Because you didn't want her to? Because you will miss her? She will miss you? The kids miss out? Or a combination of all this?

I know it is only temporary @soul, hanging in here and looking forward to better things to come. Just need to get through tonight then worry about tomorrow tomorrow.

Wish I could share the burden of your pain. Would you rather talk about it or something else? What helps?

All of the above @soul
And the frustration that this report is a complete loss.
I think what I get done tomorrow is what is done. No benifit in dragging it out any more. Going to stuff my gpa but not much I can do about that. I am unlikely to fail the subject. Just fall far short of my expectations.

Just talking has helped a lot @soul, I appreciate it a lot.
I really don't know what talk about, open to suggestions.
