Take the time you need to put the pieces back into place @utopia ...... it's natural for me to drift things from chaos to order ...., just gently like a butterfly across my landscape .....
I shared a room with my sister growing up, and she kept it permanently trashed .... looked like we had been burgled .... my kids do that to their rooms as well, then do a massive clean-up .... then it slides into trashed again. WH was the same. Now with this ocpd triggered, he is feeling driven to bring things to order, but his behaviour is too frantic to keep them that way, and his envorinment returns to semi-trashed in between,
He has started, in different rooms of the house, to state that nobody is using this or that, so get it out to the garage ..... part of the pattern that has caused my organisation to crumble, but in the wake of the ocpd diagnosis I can tell him to stop trying to control everybody else's stuff ..... that I am using the This or that that he is so ready to junk into the messed up storage in the garage where I can't find it when I need it, (so it becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy that nobody is using it !!) and give me a chance to put it away properly ...
His answer - why hasn't it been put away already ?
My answer - there are more people in this house not putting things away than the one person who is .... you do the maths on that .... and give me a chance to put the damn things away befor your trigger-happy heave-ho takes over again ..... !!
So far that's working. Anything he does truck out to the garage I am determined to truck straight back in, along with the message that we don't tidy one space by trashing another ..... it finds a use, and a place, or it goes to a new home .....
Only a bazillion more things to find a home for ..... lol .... our house has been a shifting landscape with a couple of the kids getting married in recent years, and WH's "new world order" happening to us .... but I have finally stepped up beyond the basics again, and after two weeks of drifting things back into place, "my" house is starting to find itself again.
Tip: I stick a basket under chronic mess areas. Even a crappy-looking old plastic basket looks better than a big pile of unsorted crap .... and a basket can be carried to a table, some of the crap sorted out of it, even just one item at at time, and the basket returned to where it was.
Queen of baby steps over here .... 😆👋
