My Hospital Stay

My Hospital Stay

So I arrived here at midday today.
Feeling a bit lost. Everything is so ... strange.
Not sure what to do now.
Starting to get a bit anxious. A bit teary. Trying hard not to think, or to feel.
Wishing I had a bourbon or some chips or junk food. Something to keep me busy and not feeling.

Good news @utopia. I'm so glad they believe you. And I'm so glad they are finding you another bed. you deserve to be treated so much better than you just have been by that awful psych. Sorry you might have to be in limbo for a few days.... hopefully that's not the case but at least they have given you each possible scenario so you can prepare yourself. Big warm hugs xx

Re: My Hospital Stay

So it's just after 4pm. I'm out of the cubical with the bed and now in the fast track waiting area - for other patients. Finally get to sit on a chair. Even though I'm in my pajamas. The same ones I've had on Since Friday night. Saturday was an all day pajama day.
The psych team or CATT team have been good to me. They have been trying to negotiate with my Case Manager at Workcover. Stating I had a 14 day initial approval but have only used 8 days - so surely they could just approve to continue my original approval (until next Saturday). But logic and urgency isn't a concept within Workcover. So my mum is on her way. She has booked us a room at a hotel. I need to be discharged to someone. And by staying at a hotel near this public hospital - their CATT team can visit me. Already scheduled first appointment for 9.30 tomorrow morning.
So I have the local CATT looking after me, while they advocate with Workcover for a private hospital stay.
If / when we get the WorkCover approval - then the CATT team can send off a referral to private psych hospitals.
Then if / when a new psychiatrist agrees to accept me as his/her patient - then I have to wait until a bed becomes available at that hospital.
Lots of ifs and whens.
But as @Faith-and-Hope would say - it's a tick for me. And I'm taking this as a big tick. As my old psychiatrist could have and probably wanted to make things so hard for me here.
It could have been a huge take me back to the beginning of my work trauma.
But it didn't happen that way. I was scared. Terrified. Etc. But the worst didn't happen.
So I'm taking that as a HUGE WIN FOR ME.

Re: My Hospital Stay

I'm glad you are ok and that you have your Mum, @utopia. What a relief that your Mum could come and take you out of there. That is so good.

I'm sure a new psychiatrist will accept you. I have no doubt. It's a pity that Workcover take their sweet time in approving another hospital. You would think it would just be a formality and that they could get it done quickly.

Yes, I can imagine that a psych nurse would believe you over you your former psychiatrist. Because discharging a patient who has had recent SI, on a whim, would not be 'best practice'. Doctors (and psychiatrists are doctors, after all) have to put the well-being of their patients first. They cannot just discharge someone for yelling and swearing. They have to try and help that person, as best they can. What your former psychiatrist did would look pretty bad to most professionals!

I wish you a very restful evening and a good night's sleep.

Thinking of you. xxxx

Re: My Hospital Stay

@utopia I super hope you can be somewhere where you feel safe and supported super soon. Having never been in the private system, I am bemused by the idea that a patient can be discharged for yelling. Wow, I'd last about one minute, given that if I'm triggered I tend to drop to the floor, start screaming and hit my head against the wall. If I was ever able to afford a private hospital, the reason I would be there would be to get help with those trauma reactions. Sounds like that wouldn't go so well!

Your experience at the public hospital sounds pretty typical to me. The whole system sucks and causes far more trauma than it heals!

I'm super glad you have your mum to support you. Take care @utopia.

Re: My Hospital Stay

Thank you everyone. When I type @Sahara I hope you know it is for anyone to read.
I didn't just call him all the swear words I could think off (& that wasn't alot - because he has me on the sleeping med that causes me to forget words). But as he and his squeeky trolley kept following me up the hallway to ths safety of the nurses station. I told him to back off or I would pulverize him into the ground so hard - that he would not BE anymore. (Trying to be careful with the words I can use on forum).
So - as you can tell it wasn't just me swearing at the old bugger.
anyhow.
So there will be no
Part 2
Day 9 entry as some might be expecting. Mum and I are holed up in a nice hotel. Beautiful views over looking parkland - but cheap for city prices.
Mum has been in tears as I've been telling her about thr last few days. Not the tears you might expect. No she was crying with laughter. Saying to me that (once I'm better) I should do a stand up comedy routine of my last few days. Or even better, to write a book about my mental health journey.
Told her we'd just have to wait a few years to see how my life journey through mental health pans out.
I'm beyond relieved to be out of the public hospital. I'm having a laugh about it now because otherwise I think I would go nuts.
But I see the Catt team tomorrow morning. And mum will be calling my case manager before that.
I'm almost ready for bed. Just waiting for the sleeping tablet to kick in - so I can focus on more positive things til I drift off into a dreamless sleep.
Good night everyone.

Hi @utopia

I am sorry you had to go through all of that - I tend to get angry and yell back if people are angry and yell at me - I do understand

Because I am a peaceful person like you - and get along with people - but then - on the days when my back is bad I can be very acerbic

My notes have to be short - I have to go to bed soon - what a time I have had with my new trick-printer and back pain - I am thinking about you though
