My Hospital Stay

My Hospital Stay

So I arrived here at midday today.
Feeling a bit lost. Everything is so ... strange.
Not sure what to do now.
Starting to get a bit anxious. A bit teary. Trying hard not to think, or to feel.
Wishing I had a bourbon or some chips or junk food. Something to keep me busy and not feeling.

Re: My Hospital Stay

Hi @utopia - I hope you find some peace tonight. There are definitely spare private MH beds in Melbourne. My understanding is that a certain percentage of beds (could be %10) are kept available in case of urgent admissions. The public hospital should be able to ring the intake coordinator at the private hospital and get you admitted as an insured patient. May not happen tonight but if you get an acute bed tonight I'm sure it will be sorted in the morning and you can get a transfer. You'll be OK, just keep yourself safe and remember that people care about you.

Re: My Hospital Stay

@Sahara. You explained that perfectly. I'm a voluntary patient. They have no beds here. So I slept here in the E.D.
No they didn't feed me properly. I half dry sandwich after lunch time. Hadn't eaten breakfast at old private clinic because DR "don't dare ask for a second opinion or question my opinion" had to see me during breakfast.
After 11pm last night they found me anold single sandwich a few days old.
I haven't had a cigarette since I left the private hospital. And I'm dying for one.
Saw the psych team late yesterday arvo - not since.
I've just been kept drugged up - asleep. But it's so hard to keep your cool and not lash out and have a verbal rant - because I want a bloody cigarette.
Yalk about having your rights removed.
I asked for my night meds - these are my blood pressure, blood thinners etc. No can't have them. Because no one has writtenup my medication chart.
I've been here 20 hours, roughly. Meds aren't written. Desperate for a ciggie. Seriously - hand cuff me to a security guard and let me have a smoke.
now I'm crying again.
This should not be happening to me.

Catt people have to speak to Workcover. Thenget me a bed.
Trying really hard to be compliant. But my need for a cigarette is soooo intense right now.
Been 20 hours since I arrived at public hospital. 2 stale suspicious sandwhiches. No cigarettes. Piss on the toilet floors. Screaming throughout the night. Welcome to the Emergency Department.

Re: My Hospital Stay

@utopia,

I think they will get you a bed in a private hospital today. They will want to free up that emergency bed, as soon as they can!

That's terrible about the conditions, but it does sound typical of a busy city public hospital. Are the nurses nice? Or are they of the stony-faced, stressed-out variety?

I had to go to the emergency department (with chest pain) a few months ago. They were efficient but not personable. I felt like a big inconvenience, being there. No-one smiled at me.

And then, I could hardly believe it, they sent me a bill!! You see, becuase it is such a small hospital, it has no doctors of it's own. They called in a doctor to see me (twice) and Medicare did not cover her entire fee! Wow.

Keep your chin up and sit tight, @utopia. You should have your bed today.

Re: My Hospital Stay

Oh wow @Sahara.
Stone faced nurses appears to be what I get.
I did get a good security guard. She had lots ofppersonality. And could tell that I was really scared of being here.
I'm going to go and suck on a piece of plastic (looks like a whistle) & somehow get my nicotine fix. God only knows how it works.
Really expected this thread to show the highs and lows of a private hospital stay.
Never expected my psychiatrist to make it 'all about him' & then discharge me from the hospital.
He knew I would react. He knew I would yell.
so according to his notes - I lost the plot and started screaming and carrying on - so due to that behavior - he has had to discharge me.
The sneaky bastard. At least the main nurse witnessed his different behavior and tone of voice when he thought no one was around. So she believed me.
As she said - might be best to go to a different private hospital and get a new psychiatrist.
That way I don't have to see my old psychiatrist again. As he only works at the one hospital. The one I was in til yesterday.
Feeling pretty drugged up. Don't know what they gave me last night. But it's a long lasting drug. Had to put it under my tongue. Think it might be the strength of a Hippo's Tranqualiser. Lol.
they just game me my morning medsm they couldn't even get that right.
I need a half tablet for blood pressure and my new AD. Amd my B1
Iinstead I got half an AD & my prn calmer tablet.
no point arguing. I have to be compliant. I have to suck up the indignity of this situation.
22 hrs in here and I'm sucking on a piece of plastic to get my nicotine and it's revolting.
So I'm crying again. Think this is what hell must be like.
All these people around, people from health industries. People who are meant to be healers, helpers.
But here I am invisible. I am a non person. I deserve no compassion, no dignity - nothing. Because my old psychiatrist re-wrote the story of our conversation.

I know this won't help one bit @utopia except for maybe 5 secs but here's some nature for you. ED is really hard! I struggle to be there conscious so much. I really hope they get you a bed in a new hospital and you get to start again and put this behind you. Go gently.

Re: My Hospital Stay

@Sahara. I just spoke to a psych or pdych nurse. Too dopped up or stressed to remember which. But she said that they 100% believed my story yesterday and not my old stupid psychiatrist. They thought it best to keep me in ED last night. Rather than on the psych ward. To try to prevent an incident just like what happened at my old job. So they doped me up to help me sleep through the noise in ED.
I am so relieved. I was so scared thsy would believe that idiot over me.
Amd I just went out for a real cigarette - on my own - on the footpath in front of the hospital. WOW!! Didn't even freak about all the noise of cars trucks trams people.
Mum has contacted my old hospital where I stayed last time.
And the psych team here are trying to find me a private clinic to take me today. Otherwise I jave to go home for a few days and then go back to a private hospital in Melbourne.
I can't express how grateful I am, that this part of thd ordeal is almost over
