Topic Tuesday // Caring for men who don't care about themselves // 27 June, 7pm AEST

For Topic Tuesday this week, @Former-Member and I will be hosting a session for people who are caring for men who aren't caring for themselves.

Whether it be your partner, brother, friend or son, it can be tough when someone you care about won't seek help.

Join us from 7pm AEST to be part of the discussion - ask questions, learn some tips and most importantly, be around others who are going through the same thing.

Two things you can do now

1) Hit 'Like' below to get an email notification on the night

2) Can't make the session? Leave your question below to be answered on the night

Thanks @NikNik,
I think the I statements is something I really failed at when I first started to try to help my family members who are probably now at 4 to 5.

That lack of awareness is challenging and put a lot of pressure on you @Shaz51

@Faith-and-Hope just mentioned boundaries and Pebbles raised the importance of them.

Have you been able to put boundaries in place for yourself to take some of that pressure off?

@Former-Member you must have done something right to get your family members towards at 4 - 5. It's all a learning experience.

We are just starting to touch on boundaries Carer101 - is that something you had to work hard to create?

@Former-Memberdo you really think it is you that failed or just that the people your trying to communicate failed to hear what your trying to say? It's that way in our household that you can try but they dont want to hear, unless a third party explains, or they simply dont want to.

Boundaries are really hard manage. I have tended towards both trying to be too flexible and too rigid. Self awareness is really important I think because everyone has their own stuff. But relationship counselling helped me.

"I statements" seem to backfire with ocpd .... they just feel entitled to our Mt-do your "I statements" with their own ..... invalidating what you have put forward.

At least this part-diagnosis has helped me understand more of what not to do because it is fruitless with this personality disorder ....

At least with S2 (son 2) under a pdoc and in CBT now, we are on somebody's radar as not in a good place. I feel like I'm gonna get tossed around in the surf with all that too ..... so best I gain strength in treading water.

It's not really a head-in-the-sand approach, but while I can do nothing else I am holding to distractions as much as possible and seeking long hugs with special friends.

It may well be that our marriage doesn't survive long term, and WH might end up back in the arms of his family where they can function in their own world .... I don't know .... but if that is what happens, I at least want it to happen kindly. Mental illness is nobody's fault.

Boundaries are really hard to manage, I agree @Former-Member, I find it hard to get the right balance , it is usuallly all for him and nothing for me @NikNik, @Former-Member

@NikNik, you have tried to help me soo much about this but i start ok and then the balance gets onesided
