Craft Corner

Craft Corner

A place to chat and share all things crafty!

What's your favourite craft? Is there anything you're working on at the moment? What would you like to create/work on (I have heaps of "one day" project patterns and ideas that I know I will probably never get around to, but it's nice to imagine)? I'd love to hear!

I have absolutely no artistic side to me and stick figures are the extent of my drawing ability, but I really enjoy learning and trying out new crafts. I learnt crochet during a stay in a prevention and recovery centre and it's something I pick up often when I am feeling blue, I need a distraction or I'm just a little bored. I've tried paper crafts too, although I didn't really get far with anything. Sharpies are some of my best friends and when I find my hands need to move I have a collection of smooth rocks that I draw on (different coloured circles) which often relaxes me. Sometimes I dust off the sewing machine and sew as well. I walk around spotlight for a fun outing 😉

Looking forward to hearing from you all 🙂

Re: Craft Corner

Your narwhal is so seriously awesome @Phoenix_Rising! It was not a long ago at all that you were wonky chaining and now this. So exciting!

When I made my narwhal, which I found fiddly, tricky and tiny, I was thinking of how much of a jump it was from what you were doing to it and I wish I'd linked an easier pattern. Tiny crochet rounds in a magic ciricle, multiple double crochet in the one stitch (and not technically even in a stitch as they're in the corners), crocheting your circle together at the tail... tricky! Taking on that pattern was throwing in the deep end stuff and to see you come out with what you have - really truly fab! If you can make that, I have no doubt you'll be able to make anything (with a little more practice).

Very, very awesome and very clever!

Re: Craft Corner

@CheerBear oooh I'm excited to hear that Mr Narwhal was tricky for you too. It's quite ok to throw a sea turtle in at the deep end.

Do you want to know a secret? Last night I started working on a me. Thus far I am proving to be easier than Mr Narwhal.

I still haven't figured out how to hold the yarn. I can see from the videos that everyone holds it differently. I mentioned in Forum Land a few weeks ago that I managed to give myself tennis elbow in my right arm from playing in my garden. It is now much better, but I definitely noticed it flaring last night after working on the me. Thus it is important to me that I make sure my crocheting technique, like my violining technique, is as ergonomically friendly as possible.

Re: Craft Corner

I am sooo excited to hear you're starting a you @Phoenix_Rising! I pulled out my collection of creatures the other day and did think that a you would be way easier than a narwhal. A squishy would be also, and squishy is fun because of the dangly bits (tentacles maybe) and the way they're made so they curl ☺

I'm making otters, but that's a secret also. I have finished one and almost finished the other. They're made all in single crochet and pretty much as balls, so they are also easier than narwhals.

I can see how it's important to find what feels right for you re holding yarn. When I was big mandala blanket making I was using yarn that wasn't centre-pull (where it comes out through the middle rather than winds around) and I would get quite sore from constantly having to pull yarn out. With amigurumi its my fingers that can get a bit tired and sore as I have a tight tension and seem to crochet small so.

How fun is the finished project feeling? And then the 'what can I make next' one?!

Huge yay for you again!

Re: Craft Corner

@Phoenix_Rising Pleased to hear you're trying more things crochet, that's wonderful. Apologies that my comments re your narwhal didn't meet with your approval. @CheerBear seems to speak your language much better than I. Apologies for being my practical self.

I'm taking the day off from here.

Re: Craft Corner

@Former-MemberI love your input. Practical and Creative. We all need time out but I hope you are not upset by the forum.

As an old timer on these boards I try to be open and not speak in code, though some people did not like that I used certain abbreviations. Please feel free to ask me anytime, if you dont get where I am coming from. Nobody has really gotten where I come from, and I believe we should not presume about what others mean or where they have been anyway.

I have also felt excluded in cliques since being a small child. I have become more robust about it but still hyper sensitive Saw it hurt my loved ones too. Stronger now and I have a voice.

Hi everyone
I've just finished crocheting a peppermint bsby blanket for my boss. She is due to have her first bsby in Aug. I'm going to knit some baby booties and beanie.

Re: Craft Corner

Good afternoon fellow crafters,

@Former-Member I am hearing that perhaps I have hurt your feelings in some way. I am super sorry about that. I'm not quite sure what it is that I did or didn't say that you found hurtful, but I'm still sorry about it. Hurt feelings feel yuck. I super hope the hurt feeling passes soon. Please let me know if there is anything I can explain/clarify to help you with your hurt feelings.

@CheerBear I now have a me head and a me shell. I am super excited about this. I am definitely much easier to make than Mr Narwhal was! I can't wait to show you, @Former-Member @OhanaSystem @Catcakes and everybody else my me.

@BlueBay I hope you are enjoying learning this crocheting gig as much as I am. @Former-Member and @CheerBear are super helping me. I'm having a lot of fun.
