Craft Corner

Craft Corner

A place to chat and share all things crafty!

What's your favourite craft? Is there anything you're working on at the moment? What would you like to create/work on (I have heaps of "one day" project patterns and ideas that I know I will probably never get around to, but it's nice to imagine)? I'd love to hear!

I have absolutely no artistic side to me and stick figures are the extent of my drawing ability, but I really enjoy learning and trying out new crafts. I learnt crochet during a stay in a prevention and recovery centre and it's something I pick up often when I am feeling blue, I need a distraction or I'm just a little bored. I've tried paper crafts too, although I didn't really get far with anything. Sharpies are some of my best friends and when I find my hands need to move I have a collection of smooth rocks that I draw on (different coloured circles) which often relaxes me. Sometimes I dust off the sewing machine and sew as well. I walk around spotlight for a fun outing 😉

Looking forward to hearing from you all 🙂

@Former-Member Woah! that has given me alot to think about and digest. I can see how people without experience can end up spending a fortune and not end up with the right machine for their needs. Thanks so much again for all your valuable advice .... I wouldnt have known where to start.

@CheerBear @Former-Member @Catcakes @Former-Member @Former-Member and anyone else who wants to laugh at admire my very first attempt at amigurumi.

Everybody, meet Mr Narwhal. Mr Narwhal is a very special Narwhal. He suffers from a rare genetic condition that causes:

  • Random large holes through which you can see his insides.
  • A somewhat wonky tail.
  • His horn to be notably lower on his head than is typical of Narwhals.
  • A generally overall atypical appearance.

Nevertheless, I feel super clever. Right now I'm just as excited as Squirt was here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDmYVWweZ8c :smileyvery-happy:

Hello Crafters! Hopefully your Sunday is being relaxing and kind to you and those around you!

It's very quiet here today, no lawn mowers etc, so I managed quite the sleep in after a night of troubling dreams, and feel much better for it.

You are most welcome @Bunniekins and anyone else who might find the list of use to them too.

Might I ask what state you are in so I can better find suppliers relevant to you @Bunniekins? or a choice of 2 states close to you if you'd rather not say exactly. I'm thinking because of classes from the place you buy it from, or classes because a particular shop is the dealer for the brand, sort of thing. Of course, you may want to do that searching for yourself, and that is okay.

@Shaz51 @Bunniekins @Appleblossom maybe we should start a thread about it

I think the Brits learned a lot from the Scandi tv series makers too, so their later productions are 'better' somehow, but also, some of the older works are still superb, so not sure ...

Broadchurch, Vera, Happy Valley, The Fall, Endeavour, Scott and Bailey, Waking the Dead, Inspector Morse, all firm favourites of mine. Of course there are others too ... I also watch what I can get of Scandi Noir with subtitles.

@CheerBear so pleased to see you in the corner over there with your hook and yarn!

@Catcakes hope your head cold has improved and you get to enjoy the event as much as possible.

With thoughts for a relaxing and easy Sunday for us all:

@Former-Member Hi SunShower let's say NSW and ACT. Again I am really appreciating all that you are doing for me re this sewing machine you a re a bit of a star me thinks.

Love Broachchurch, Happy Valley, what was the name of the sweet cop show that had these old retired coppers coming back and looking at old cases, the song that was in the intro went something like "Its alright, doing fine, really doesnt matter if the sun dont shine... it's alright its okay getting to the end of the day ...' ...? Can anyone remember it?

Re: Craft Corner

Very nicely done @Phoenix_Rising! A completed crochet item - congratulations!

You might be able to pull the tail around a bit to reshape it to how it's supposed to go. Pulling and pushing stitches to get them into their proper place is fine as long as you don't break the yarn of course. I mean, there are limits, right.

I can't see well enough, but it looks like your darling Narwhal's atypical shape comes from his body not having grown long enough at the point of those repeated extra rows before the shaping /narrowing, that comes before the tail. If you do have the required number of rows, tightening the tension at the shaping would fix it, on the other hand, you may have fed him too much!

@CheerBear will probably be able to tell you more accurately from her experience, and also share with you about how to keep the stitches really tight together so the stuffing doesn't show through too. I've read about it, but my hands aren't up for the task of doing it.

Good work Phoenix_Rising, well done you! Are you going to make another so you gain greater skills from the experience and also to get him properly finished before moving onto something more involved?

Understanding what pattern instructions are, knowing/learning how to follow them, and why it's important to do so, are vital to getting the best from your very swiftly advancing skill set.
