Welcome To My Nightmare

Welcome To My Nightmare

Ok so it isn't a nightmare, so much as a persistent ache. And yes being dramatic I have borrowed the title from Alice Cooper (I commonly use song titles and lyrics which seems typical for Aspies). This does ramble a bit and I keep editing but will publish as-is lest I don't publish at all.

I have been here a week and talked to a few people, tried to provide help to others - using my typically Aspie (Aspergers - part of the Autism Spectrum) approach which I will say does not suit all expectations. But I feel I have not really said what I hope to get our of being here. Something I know part of me is trying to avoid.

I came to this forum wanting to find something new. A way to connect with others because I feel totally useless at this in real life which has lead to me being a bit of a shut-in. I don't talk to anyone about this as openly as I would like because; a) it terrifies me that this may be the best I can hope for out of life, b) I feel that people don't want to know, c) I'm not good at asking for help - I feel embarrassed that I am in this pickle and can't find the answer.

I am Aspie and I (quite typically) see the world in a way that seems different from people around me and feel that increasingly that puts me in a different place from others. It has gotten to the point where I am frightened of being open with anyone - yes even this screen as I type - but I will try.

I had a relationship for about 8.5 years but that was less than ideal. While I loved her, I found her overbearing and unaccepting of what makes me who I am. She started out by liking that I was different from the men before but she also wanted me to suit her ideal partner who it turned out was really the men she had had before. I won't claim to have not been part of the problem as I must have been, but my family was concerned as they saw this lady as not seeing me as an equal. When I tried to establish myself over things that mattered to me (from the layout of my work area to tucking in my shirt) it always resulted in a huge argument, one she never let me walk away from (last word syndrome). In the end, I got tired of trying (and failing to make things happy) so I simply stopped. Of course, it all got ugly and I simply said no to doing it all again. I thought that would free me to have a better life.

In the couple of years since I have tried dating a few times (real-world & internet) but in every instance the results are less than pleasing. I have made a couple of loose friendships but most of the time I get blown-off pretty darned fast.

One of my work situations is getting quieter every week. That is just me working alone solo so I can't help but feel responsible for the decline. Increasingly I feel like I must be doing everything wrong (and being family they don't want to tell me).

I am a musician and even there find that same frustration. Each album gets less positive feedback (yep, that un-cool crap again). Help I offer in a music forum has come under attack several times so I am careful what I do and offer of myself. I got handed a CD by someone last week and it is pretty darned good. I would have sent off an excited email but now I feel silly to do that as he wants me to like his work (which I helped happen as he was avoiding putting the record out) but doesn't comment on mine. Feels one-sided and like I would be being silly.

When I was younger I always felt like I was different and on the side of life but I had a life. I put myself out and while I was rebuffed a quite a lot I was also welcomed by a few people. Now I feel like I am outside of life, that there is no way for me to be part of anything bigger than myself. I feel like I am accepted in situations where I have a use (work, as a dance partner) but no more than that as I am annoying, faulty or a "weirdo".

I used to be a cheery and active person but now I feel like simple, pleasurable things like going to the beach or riding my bike (to the beach) are increasingly not worth doing. I am afraid to even try liking anyone (let alone showing that) as I come away feeling worse from the rejection/failure.

Logic suggests that this is my failing but I can't work out how and how to overcome it as doing the things I want to, seem to create the same outcome again. Am I being a narcissist, paranoid, did I fall out of time & fashion, should I just 'suck it up' & 'just do it' or whatever the latest meme Lorna Jane t-shirt says...?

Thaks for reading and any feedback welcome.

Re: Welcome To My Nightmare

Glad to hear you're doing a bit better @Fiz 🙂
I'd imagine that wanting to feel useful/valued is a standard human trait, so you're far from being alone there.
It sounds like you've got a good approach for identifying and dealing with the "sloppy thinking" - well done and all the best on that front. 🙂

Re: Welcome To My Nightmare

@Fiz what is 'Rock & Roll dancing'? Also, hi. From what I've gathered you seem cool. The music industry is difficult these days for artists, especially to gain an audience and have exposure as a mature artist. Is it not possible for you to work in the music production industry? I myself love progressive tunes. Out of curiosity, wherein lies the great appeal of being a rock-star?

Whilst I can't say I can relate to much of your concerns I've been put to autism testing by my health team (which yielded negative scoring). Could it be the long term effects of relationships and the lack of exploration of your thoughts in a logical manner to your peers that have decreased your morale for the moment? Are you just seeking praise and recognition? Would it be possible to reorient yourself to new passions? I see your goals but I don't understand your situation. If teaching is an option, are you able to join a music tutoring college of sorts? Are you constrained by time and is your day-job irrelevant to your passion?

I was passionate but uncommitted to my dream and know that I can always create another dream with each breath I take.

All the best,

Glorianna

Re: Welcome To My Nightmare

Hi @Glorianna

R&R dancing is the original Jive as practiced in milk bars etc in the 50's. It is very simple and pretty easy to learn. This is the style

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YM55FigrYk

Be aware that what you see in movies with dips and throws is actually Hollywood Swing, similar but very unwelcome on a public floor as it gets dangerous.

Progressive? as in Prog Rock or Progressive Trance?

Yes it is a case of having let myself get in a bit of a hole from allowing myself to be dominated by trying to please/appease others. Bit of a family history of that from my grandparents', parents' and at least one of my brothers' relationships.

I would dearly love some praise and recognition LOL. This is the core of why people want to be a "star". The money and glamor are simply a reflection of that - and more often than not unhealthy. I only ever wanted a modest career with the respect of other musicians and knowledge that there were people out there eager for a new {Fiz} record. It would also be nice if friends (whatever they are) and family took some interest but that seems too much.

As for teaching, I have offered a few times on Gumtree but silence. In forums, the kids (who are often older than even I am) only want quick fixes like push Button X and you'll have a hit. When it turns out to be more complex they get shitty or disappear. I will say that I have also probably not been as committed to my dream as many would say I should have been. I make my art but after years of getting nowhere ran out of ideas or more likely courage. I now simply make my art with a vague sense of hope whilst I sell fruit (which is way better than cars these days).

INTERESTING THING: With my ex I often got super frustrated that she didn't really listen and her replies to what I said in a conversation felt tangential and I felt unheard - even worse in an argument. Of course, my circling back to my unacknowledged point made her angrier. Losing cycle that one.

I get mega irritated when people refuse to listen. I don't expect to be agreed with (even tho that is nice) but to at least be heard and acknowledged (which I always try to offer to others but maybe my Aspie bluntness is my undoing). When it seems like people refuse to hear my point I feel like I am being made irrelevant, dismissed - like I have no right to my ideas.

Recently I have been in conversations where exactly the same has happened and I have to admit I have been pretty firm in pointing out that the person was digressing and therefore hurtful. One was a scholarly political discussion and the fellow was mature enough that I could head him off and get back on topic till he acknowledged my point. The second was a lady at work over some environmentalist stuff. She came and apologized a few minutes later. Now today I have had the same in a Forum where I laid my idea out but all the responses (incl a snipe from a from a Mod) have been off-topic and contrary to the topic. I have posted to try to pull back on-topic (with no expectation of a good result).

Am I being jumpy, precious, overly Aspie-blunt/arrogant or simply in need of better people to hang with?

Thanks

🙂

Re: Welcome To My Nightmare

@Fiz That looks like heaps of fun! I don't really know much about music but I tend to lean towards progressive metal and jazz. I don't like music without meaning but find the artists that have good content may not have a huge following. I've recently begun to enjoy country music as well so I'm a bit all over in terms of what I like.

I learnt the hard way not to live through the experiences of family members. Projecting thoughts of strangers/acquaintances of yourself is the worst thing you could do to yourself because there is no basis of fact. I think praise and recognition can come from close friends and the wider world without the burden of having it relate to music. If someone loves you enough they will tell you your music is perfect regardless of what they may actually believe. It's just that they may be lost in the details of the art itself.

Maybe you need a fresh outlook on your content. If something isn't currently grabbing anyone's attention, try a different angle. Live your life and be inspired.

Do you compose/play an instrument? It would help to know what kind of music you're making.

Re: women - probably safest not to argue and take the blame for the most random, trivial complaints. It sucks that conversation was difficult with your past relationship. I'm not good with people so I tend to simply avoid conflict. A word left unsaid is such a waste I've had my ideas dismissed but I've come to realise that sometimes people can be self-absorbed. Now I let it go and do some sport.

In lieu of my low self-esteem I'd simply assume that these people don't care about your well-being over their immediate task. Maybe someone else can be more helpful on social interactions, as I find myself lacking.

It can be all too easy to dwell on the negative interactions that occur on a day-to-day basis but try to find 3 occurences daily that bring you joy. Eg. Watching the sun rise, good timing, tea.

If you want to try dancing then there would be a R&R class near you. So long as you let yourself get the 1,2, Backstep pattern (and follow) you are set. Men are often in short supply but if you are friendly and show you will follow then men will ask you up.

Progressive Metal eh. You mean like Dream Theater? A lot of the modern stuff I struggle to get into as it seems more about showing off than saying something. So like you I prefer a song that says something - even if it is simple. I am still into Yes, ELP, early Deep Purple (like the Concerto for Band & Orchestra), Alan Parsons Project, and classic Metal like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and anything with Dio singing. Right now Plex is playing me some Asia.

I have a fair bit of Country and there is some wonderful stuff; Old Hank Williams, the Georges Jones & Strait, Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Gary Allan... Just don't make me listen to Keith Urban.

As for Jazz, I have a few things that are more Pop like George Benson and Sade but the more complex stuff I have not delved into as much as I should.

I use a keyboard but couldn't say I was a player (or I would join a Country Band myself). I compose using software. My own music is pure Electronic Music and I commonly use the Space Music term. If you are familiar with acts like Jarre, Vangelis Tangerine Dream or Tomita then you are in my ballpark. I think that my music is probably a bit too complex for most people (want) to understand. Not lots of notes but ideas that are a perhaps a bit too abstract for most to take the time to make sense of. In a world where everything is over in 5 seconds anything that requires time is irrelevant.

I try not to argue but sadly part of the Aspie nature is to try to help people by putting their errors right. Most people would rather cling to their errors. Maybe even me? I am good with people on the surface but after that, it seems to get hard.

You are right that I shouldn't project. It is a danger when I don't really feel like I understand a situation so I mentally run through all the possibilities trying to find the most logical match. Of course, that can easily lead to paranoia. Sadly people don't always explain themselves clearly. And I know people commonly don't understand me, even tho I try to be very precise in what I say. Sometimes I think that precision is something that puts people off.

Good things yesterday: helped my brother whilst he is away, went for a walk on the beach, wrote an article on music, worked on a piece which seems to put me at the end of writing for an album, and watched Big Hero 6.

Thanks for chatting

🙂

Re: Welcome To My Nightmare

@Fiz Oh wow! Thank you for the recommendations, I shall endeavour to check them out over the next few days. Dream theatre sounds quite uplifting. I don't usually like that but I like what I hear so far. Oh, nope. The vocals started 3 mins in...

I like things that may not bring on a good mindset for the audience here. Things like Dark Tranquility, Katatonia, Scar Symmetry, Opeth, Children of Bodom.

I'm also a sucker for lovely vocals like Billie Marten, Leona Naess, The Pierces, Dolly Parton. I had a friend who became quite into electronic music in the context of parties and such. I think the artist was someone Robinson? So I had a listen but have no real opinion beyound it being nice. I've only recently began branching out and exploring new music. I guess internet has its uses as well as the drawbacks for new artists being lost in the void.

I wonder, have you ever tried arguing with a primary/high school aged child? It must be quite frustrating. I don't understand how parents/carers can be patient. No rational approach works.

Perhaps I am in a state, but is it overly necessary for people to understand you? Frankly, I don't bother to try and understand every person I meet because it would take too much effort and prevent me from completing daily tasks. Those I do try and understand, my friends and family I would hate for them to understand me. I align understanding to being similarly fragmented in the head. Maybe I just take issue with sharing. It seems unnecessary... guess that's why my mind is where it's at. I have little empathy. I have also found that most groups of people lie but some cultures don't and are ever only honest. It may be a matter of making new acquaintances. The world is not so scary with a little kindness.

What an exciting day you've had! So many things completed and a walk by the beach! That's creative, physical, and emotional excercise you've taken. Great work!

I love Big Hero 6! It's on my list of favourite animations. The recent Sausage Party was also highly entertaining although I found the mention of a Stargate rather odd. I am much more boring with my tasks: washed hair, cut nails, tidied.

Don't feel bad about Dream Theater as I find them a great disappointment. Right now dipping into Opeth's Sorceress album. Don't feel bad about darker music. I think that darker music can be great, so long as it is life-affirming in totality. I would far rather listen to Cannibal Corpse than Adele or many of those other "artists" who seem to hate music and life itself.

This Opeth seems ok. Personally, I like a little more bombast in stuff like this, something like Candlemass' Epicus Doomicus Metallicus album or King Diamond The Eye. Don't love any of their other albums but in both of these cases, I think they got something special with those records. I will need to listen to more of this Opeth stuff and check the other names.

If you like the sludgy side of Opeth then check out Cathedral's Forest of Equilibrium or if you are feeling very grim, Winter's Into Darkness which I think is the scariest album ever made. Both available on YT.

I think that many people these days never get past being teenagers in their view of the world. It's like they don't ever fully realize that other people exist, think & feel just like they do. And yes their sense of logic and common sense would be hilarious if not so scary and frustrating. I'm glad I didn't have kids.

I think you are right and have been thinking that myself today. Why should I care what people who I don't respect think of me. Why should I try to get their approval. It is silly. I had some lovely conversations today with some of the regulars who I commonly haven't spoken to much. They were such lovely people and it felt so nice to just feel part of the conversation and of value to them in those moments. I shall try to focus only on people and situations in which I feel like I am building a better life and let the others go. That should go my list of achievements I think.

Big Hero 6 is very nice and I will watch it again for sure. Haven't seen Sausage Party, I hear it is very crass. I did see Inside Out which I think is just wonderful. Fingers crossed that should be on TV soon as it is about a year old.

Re: Welcome To My Nightmare

Hey @Fiz, my apologies for my rudeness. There have been some new medications my body has been introduced to and side effects with it that have resulted in my silence. I hope you don't mind some periodic absences on my part. It's great to hear from you and I adore some of the Candlemas/Winter tunes. It's fantastic that you find Opeth charming! They frequently come to Australia as well as doing their US/UK tours. Seeing them perform their albums is one of the things keeping me from suicide.

Have you ever faced any issues with explaining how health impacts relationships? Like how certain things are the cause of great frustration that other people overlook or minimise? I find it very difficult to reconnect with people after considerable changes to my mental state, even as I'm approaching healthy once more.

Harry Potter is on TV and I never really liked the series as a child but watching it this time round made me appreciate that fantasy world much more.

I hope you're keeping warm in this chilly weather.

Re: Welcome To My Nightmare

Hi @Glorianna

No worries. I have most all of the Harry Potter (except maybe the last). While I love the concept, like Rord of the Lings, I find the movies seem to lack that something special. Won't mean I won't watch them again sometime in the future.

Yes I guess we all do. I know my ex didn't even ant to listen when I started to consider that I may be Aspie. I get that in some ways as that changed her idea of what I was and to be blunt probably she didn't want to explain to her kids that her partner was now a "head-case". I don't think she would have every really wanted to take time to understand that there are some ways in which I as an Aspie I think differently from her very emotive Neuro Typical manner.

I think through every change we shed some and hopefully attract some other people (and things). My 2 cents, is best not to fight that. Friends will work on a friendship, others won't.

Re: Welcome To My Nightmare

@Fiz Look at me! I'm on a computer! Excuse my excitement, I just type at an infuriatingly slow speed so there may not be very much content. Too many people end up dead in Harry Potter, with it being the safest place in the world and all. I think it's a point that's often overlooked by young children wanting to be accepted into Hogwarts. Unless that's the appeal. Disconcerting, really.

My behaviour is odd in that I want to be treated as an average functioning human despite sometimes presenting severe MI effects. Things that result in withdrawing from my studies, society, and workplaces. It's sad to think that so much emotional energy can be utterly wasted on human relationships but I guess the silver lining would be that every person draws from their past experiences and are able to move on. Or backwards. Hopefully we don't have too much of that in Australia, if only symbolically. Oh dear, spell check doesn't seem to be available as a function here so you'll witness all my errors.

It is definately true that good people gravitate towards their kind so I'll work on taking a chance on people again. Letting go of the past is really no fun at all. It's almost comforting to ruminate on the lives of people you knew well once who are no longer relevant to your day to day existence. I am taking your advice on as a little challenge to myself to shed people from my mind. I will post this and hope for the best, formatting wise.
