Welcome and getting started

We’ve been listening to your feedback about moderation decisions on the Forums.

We’ve been listening to your feedback about moderation decisions on the Forums.

Updates to our Forum Guidelines:

We’ve heard your feedback about how our Forum guidelines are interpreted and applied. As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, we’ve reviewed the guidelines to make them clearer and easier to understand.

We also want to be transparent about how moderation works and what you can expect from us.

“Be friendly” is now “Be respectful”

We’ve changed “Be friendly” to “Be respectful” because we heard that “friendly” is difficult to interpret consistently. You don’t have to agree with someone to participate in the Forums, but we always need to treat others with respect.

A new recovery-focused guideline

We’ve added a guideline to help keep the Forums focused on recovery, peer-to-peer connection, and support.

Recovery looks different for everyone. You don’t need to be “doing well” to participate, and it’s okay to talk about difficult experiences, setbacks, and challenges. At the same time, we want the Forums to be a place where people can have conversations to leave room for connection, reflection, and community.

How we moderate:

The SANE Forums are moderated by real people. Our moderators use the guidelines to help keep the Forums safe, respectful, and supportive.

Because moderation is a human process, there will sometimes be differences in how situations are interpreted and decisions are made. If you disagree with a moderation decision, you can provide respectful feedback. Our team of managers or our quality team will consider your concerns about how the guidelines have been interpreted or applied.

We may remove posts or threads when we believe this is needed to protect the safety or wellbeing of the wider community. This can include content that may have a harmful or negative impact on other members. We strive for consistency rather than perfection, with the goal of keeping things safe and respectful for all.

The Forums belong to the community

The biggest strength of the SANE Forums is the peer-to-peer connection that members provide to each other.

These guidelines help us protect that environment and keep the Forums a safe, respectful, and recovery-focused space for everyone.

Hi @EternalFlower ,

Yes, that is the correct link to our Community Guidelines, thank you for sharing it.

We appreciate you for sharing your thoughts, and if you or anyone else would like to provide further feedback, we encourage you to do so via our Feedback and complaints Form here

Our primary role as moderators is to support the community, encourage members to connect with and support one another, and to help maintain a safe online space.

Wishing everyone a lovely weekend.

@Honeymoon that does not connect.

Absolutely, will send my feedback now. Encourage everyone else to send feedback as well, a vitally important way to speak up, hoping that will really make change real :)

https://www.sane.org/about-us/policies/feedback-and-complaints-policy here is the feedback form, for anyone, strongly support Honeymoon's suggestion, which is a good one, to direct feedback directly to the service.

Re: We’ve been listening to your feedback about moderation decisions on the Forums.

oh no thats not good it was broken @DogMan79

had only emailed before.

glad ur positive feedback was received.

Interesting what you said about over moderated, thats a good point. But i think also without info ppl are forced to fill in the gaps, so i was only saying that if that is the case, that they've decided to do less, than itw oudl be good to know. I'm used to my voice not mattering much, but have tried to put in feedback via the appropriate channels just now.

Re: We’ve been listening to your feedback about moderation decisions on the Forums.

Thanks so much for the clarification and thanks, too for all the time and effort you put into making SANE a safe place for us.

I know that, while I have occasionally been a bit wayward in my posts, we couldn't have access to this most valuable forum.

So well done to the team and I look forward to continuing to participate.

Hey,

I don't want to make this first post sound like the usual. "I'm here, you've got it all wrong".

But,,, (oh gawd! he says). Could we have a discussion about this ad. https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/4465953948/

As a context; after talking to some lovely people in the Lifeline, mensonline, sane and a few other "siloed" call centre numbers. Lets be inclusive and consider the other 297 well-intentioned members of https://www.suicidepreventionaust.org/our-ambition/

N.B. Reading from the mensonline page. "... men are often more focused on solutions than talking about their feelings". I hope I'll be excused for the stupidities of my sex. I'm tired of attempts to talk me off MY cliff, while I'm trying to flag all my peers, on theirs.

The one common problem the silos all seem to have is a cultural one. There's no lacking in expertise in people who are attempting to talk people off a cliff. But the numbers are going up, and the violence (as reported on the news yesterday) is becoming more extreme. This is an problem with our public institutions, where every public service is to be "delivered" by some funded advocacy group. "We have a problem, throw some money at it! More research!" More (delivered) education!

After 40 calls, I'm tired of commiserating with the person on the other end that they can't escalate a suggestion, even though they agree entirely with the problem (that they don't have team meetings which might identify the common reason for calls).

Let's start there. Not sure where this discussion might take us, but it does ned to be centred on the CEO's of the silos. And how, e.g. These forums will be shared off ALL their web sites and with ALL their call centres employees/volunteers.

And just so you don;t think this discussion is limited to Australia. Here's a needs assessment survey the EC is using to get their publicly-funded silos to focus on their common citizen. https://ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/runner/OnlineKnowledgeHub_NeedsAssessment

Let me know if it rings a bell for you. All the best

Re: We’ve been listening to your feedback about moderation decisions on the Forums.

Hey Tom,

I don"t know how your internal systems work. As I've been working on your side of the forums' fence since the web started, its been a revelation to see how the members of https://www.suicidepreventionaust.org/ (SPO) operate, independently. I only found this forum, which seems to be shared with the (associated) lifeline site, although very few prospective clients there would be capable of discovering it on that web site.

Unlike most of the forums in the Research and Development (R&D) online spaces in unis around the world, these (what we might call civil spaces) come and go on a regular basis because, in the case of Aussie's SPO's the "silos" (sorry, more R&D talk) simply refuse to collaborate and share one forum. And that means for both ïnternal"and ëxternal" conversations.

Excuse me. I've just got to the point of surviving the Aussie Family court legal process. I hadn't realised the Aussie institutional culture of "delivering (with remarkable efficiency) the outcomes". i.e. "putting the many ambulances at the bottom of the cliff", and never one at the top. "Treating the symptoms and never the cause."

It has helped, with a deep regret, to understand why, each of them contributes to a social situation where murdered wives and suicidal husband rates in this country are leading the world.

This is a hard subject to address. And I completely understand why a moderator would sweep this discussion under the carpet, as every one of their predecessors has. IF this is the case, then please, don't feel any guilt. I understand completely that I, like you, understand what it is to be an Australian.
