Son (22) with schizophrenia

Son (22) with schizophrenia

Living with someone who suffers from schizophrenia is very difficult. Even medicated it seems he lives in a different world and stares a lot whilst smoking cigarettes like a steam train.
Sleeps during the day, spooks around at night.
Any advice about healthy diet, less coffee and smokes, is ignored.
He will never live a productive life.
We've lost family members close to us on the way because of his behaviour and them not understanding mental illness.
Ofcourse I worry about our future.
I need to be single as no other man can live with us.
I need to work full time to provide a roof over our heads and pay the bills. Without me, he'll be homeless, jobless and suicidal as his paranoia would kick in, specially when he thinks the meds are only given to him as he is a guinea pig and 'they' are trying to change his DNA...
I've always wanted children but no one never told me how tough it would be if a mental illness strikes the 'Brady bunch' family image with a thunderbolt.
A medal to anyone who cares for someone suffering mental illness.
They need all the help and support they can get. They deserve better too. Mental illness you don't see from the outside, my son looks like a healthy good looking young man but has no future. Maybe with support and someone pushing him out of his shell but some have tried and given up.
I have given up a marriage and another 7 years old relationship and noe bought a small unit to care for my son, indefinite. We have no other family here as Migrated here in 1987.

My love for my son is very deep and I am so proud of him he went to hospital last year and still takes his depot shot every month. However, I feel anxious and worry all the time. He has applied for DSP (disability pension) but he tells me if he gets rejected, and 'they' want him to work, he will stop the depot needle. It takes his motivation and energy away, He knows he can't work 8-5pm, neither with or without meds.
My good sense of humour is slowly fading but where there's life, there's hope, right?
Thanks for reading my story.

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

hello @patientpatient

thank you for letting @Former-Member and myself know the progress..

sorry Darcy meant to include you in the previous comment for the lovely way you have of checking in on people...

sometimes small progress is the best...slowly healing...

good that you are able to objectively compare the last twelve months.. puts the situation into perspective..

quiet and flat I think possibly sedative side of medication...

weirdness might be your son revealing some of himself..a new part of his personality emerging..perhaps he is also of showing you how much you mean to him and that he realises how you have been there for him every step of the way..

I do hope that you allow yourself some moments of self appreciation and recognition of the strength and love you have provided your son.

My son out of touch again for some time now and last spoke he was noticeably unwell ....tone of voice so icy cold....

so when I read of improvement....you help me also...

thank you patient patient...love that name

take care

So very sorry I haven't been here for you all.

I'm trying the best to look after myself. Therefore I haven't given the laptop a lot attention.

Last year I took my son overseas and surprise suprise, I had been worried about nothing. It all went very well. We only stayed in the one suburb, bike riding back and fro between my mum and dad and my brother. My mum has Parkinsons and it's been such a struggle for my dad specially. He is her full time carer (he's 80 years old!) He deserves a medal and it kills us with his only daughter (me) living so far away and can't be of any assistance. I now have my son to look after, and need to work to provide a roof above our heads, so going back is no option as at my age I'll never find work there....

Anyhow my son was on heavy medication, it had been doubled just before the trip as he had been up all night and slept during the day and this was no condition to travel and enoy it.

Because of this he slept about 15 hours, until late in the morning but as soon as he woke up, we hopped on the bike for a 15 mins trip to see his grandparents who would be waiting for us. Mum also needs the whole morning to get up with help of carer, who helps my mum to have a shower so my dad can make coffee and breakfast for her. So my son enjoyed the trip very much. He even managed to not smoke during the 24 hour flight with stopover! I was so proud of him, carrying his passport during the whole trip without going into a rant about legal name fraud and losing the name etc. etc.

He was not very talkative, just sitting or laying on the couch or sitting outside on the balcony (my parents live 7 storeys high) for his smoke.

My dad knows what it is like to be a carer. He is suggesting for him to live independently, so I can have my life back. He is aware of the many sacrifices you make while caring for a loved one.

I have stopped thinking about the future and told him I am living day by day. My son tells me often, if I'm no longer here, he will also go. He says he'll be 33 when he 'goes'.

This are always big blows for a mother to hear, and I have to start looking again to get some councelling as depression can kick in so easily!

My ex partner wanted to catch up for a coffee. He has had councelling and he was offering further councelling for both of us, he would start a 'course about mental health' to help me with my son and would do anything to start the relationship up again, but live apart. He had missed me and I was still the love of his life and wanted to travel with me again to see 'our' friends overseas.

What it sounded like he wanted to start a 'friends with benefits' relation, and he told me in the end of the catch up, he had been seeing others but had always been thinking of me! I have declined, I am better off without him, it was so very hard to stop and walk out of that relationship, he never cared for my son, so I cannot see how this is going to change, plus the fact I know he has been with others, I couldn't go there again, it would always been on my mind! He shouldn't have told me, it was none of my business, we broke up, so he can do what he want, but he wanted to be honest with me in case I found out. Well there you go, one meeting a year after we broke up, and we both left hurt again, so that's it, no more!

My priorities have changed, my son is number 1. I don't need help of someone who couldn't even bare being in the same room with him, this will also always be on my mind.

They say let the past go, this is what I have to do to move on, and I have been going good in the last year.

I am still working full time, taking care of my son, trying to keep him motivated to live his life without stress, keeping him balanced and happy.

My daughter is getting engaged soon, and we fly over to be with her for 2 weeks.

We return for his psych appointment and meds, then we fly back to see his grandparents, knowing this will be the last time he will see his grandmother as she is in her last stage of this terrible struggle with Parkinsons.

Anyway thank you for reading my update, I only hope you get something out of it, I dont mean to get too personal, but I have always been like an open book, and who cares..... I DO and I know you do too 🙂

xxx

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

hello @Grasshopper3

Brilliant how well your son managed the flight....you included...there is definitely a huge mother son bond and huge trust there...no surprise to me...

no jet lag? ..he fared better than I did...

not sure if that was the first time that he met his grandparents.....that in itself ...even if had met before...having more family who welcome him and treat him with respect is a huge blessing for both of you..

so many families shun the relatives who have this illness....mine and my exhusbands have now...

purely out of fear of the unknown...not reading or looking into how the illness affects the person and that the true person is still there just wanting love and acceptance...

how is he settling in back home on his own whilst you are working full-time? I know that this was very hard on him before and it took some considerable time to set up a heath-care or social worker to come to the house and check in on him...

your daughter getting engaged...congratulations..mother of the bride to be ....another family occasion of joy for your son to be included in....share with you and his sister..

your next trip back to see your parents will be hard ..no question...

yes please seek out medicare funded psychiatrist or psychologist sessions....you need some support..

I dont know if I would even be here now if it were not for my psychotherapist...I hate writing that because I instantly think of my two beautiful sons...husband and family...just fearful thoughts of despair..

I empathise your feelings of the lurking depression....take notice of them and acknowledge that they are there...let those tears come...talk to the wall..the ceiling...the trees...just keep on letting it all out...

your ex-partner wishing to get back with you on his terms ...is this the same man who could not live with your son? wants you back together but living apart....has been testing the waters so to speak with others...

For me,,,,if I was in that position ....I would be looking at him in disgust for suggesting such a proposition...not worthy of being loved...he has far too much self-love....

you have decided wisely in my mind....though not my place to judge...just am angry with him for treating you and your son that way....sorry

yes I love reading your posts and have missed them so much...I am so happy that you care and am over the moon that you know how much I care...

you both are very important to me and will always have a special place in my heart..

please do not wear yourself out...even though I want to hear from you...

what I want foremost is for you to put yourself first..

your always friend
