Son (22) with schizophrenia

Son (22) with schizophrenia

Living with someone who suffers from schizophrenia is very difficult. Even medicated it seems he lives in a different world and stares a lot whilst smoking cigarettes like a steam train.
Sleeps during the day, spooks around at night.
Any advice about healthy diet, less coffee and smokes, is ignored.
He will never live a productive life.
We've lost family members close to us on the way because of his behaviour and them not understanding mental illness.
Ofcourse I worry about our future.
I need to be single as no other man can live with us.
I need to work full time to provide a roof over our heads and pay the bills. Without me, he'll be homeless, jobless and suicidal as his paranoia would kick in, specially when he thinks the meds are only given to him as he is a guinea pig and 'they' are trying to change his DNA...
I've always wanted children but no one never told me how tough it would be if a mental illness strikes the 'Brady bunch' family image with a thunderbolt.
A medal to anyone who cares for someone suffering mental illness.
They need all the help and support they can get. They deserve better too. Mental illness you don't see from the outside, my son looks like a healthy good looking young man but has no future. Maybe with support and someone pushing him out of his shell but some have tried and given up.
I have given up a marriage and another 7 years old relationship and noe bought a small unit to care for my son, indefinite. We have no other family here as Migrated here in 1987.

My love for my son is very deep and I am so proud of him he went to hospital last year and still takes his depot shot every month. However, I feel anxious and worry all the time. He has applied for DSP (disability pension) but he tells me if he gets rejected, and 'they' want him to work, he will stop the depot needle. It takes his motivation and energy away, He knows he can't work 8-5pm, neither with or without meds.
My good sense of humour is slowly fading but where there's life, there's hope, right?
Thanks for reading my story.

Hello

I have met quite a few of relatives now still more to meet. Some tonight and some tomorrow.

i have stayed in several parts of country now in a sort space of time. Still more territory to cover.

not much sleep due to musical beds scenario.

have managed to get Skype system running reasonably with husband, sister. Have spoken to mum on phone twice.

older son sending messages via Skype and I have responded back.

He is very focussed on cancer and healthy living. Am hoping that he is looking after self. Paranoia seems to be present most times.

other son messaging me via Facebook. So iPad has been my overseas form of communication mainly.

is a struggle but I need to do this now that I am here.

wish you the best with your upcoming visit. Hoping not too distressing for either of you.

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

Morning @Former-Member, good to see your sunny flowers. Thanks for the callout. Are you OK? Hubby? Any plans today.

My mum just spent 2days in hospital having blood/ iron transfusion to get he blood count back up (re metastatic cancer). She gets really upset easy. She might get 9 out of 10 visiters but she focuses and cries about the one that didn't. I don't think she'll ever change, always been depressed, in denial, now with this terrible disease taking her away (evident by weight loss++) its just worse and unfair to expect anything more from her now, she's not coping 😞

My babybro (with 'colgate' lol sz), he's actually stepped up and helping mum and dad more than anyone. Even though they have to pay him - they have it to give and he lives close (5min drive). He's still broke all the time (re street drigd I guess) but I make avpoint on focusing on the good he does, try to boost his self esteem. Empowering him is my way of also reaching out to mum and day when I'm not up to being there. Its so hard with loved ones with MI and comorbidities or other illnesses. The paranoia and secrecy makes it hard to know whats going on enough to stay a step ahead. Very exhausting. I think I have compassion fatigue.

Anyway, wishing all the Colgate team a good arvo. Stay strong 🌷🌿

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

@Former-Member, continuing emotional times ahead from the sound of things. I have (fortunately) not had the additional worry of illicit drugs, but know that it further adds to an already complex situation. All I can do is encourage you to keep the self care happening and keep that support happening as you can.

Hello @Grasshopper3 @Gemima @patientpatient @Former-Member @Former-Member @soul @Shaz51 @Marit

Looking likely that the Sz diagnosis for Mr Darcy is unlikely and the consensus at this stage is BPii with PD (NOS) and OCD/anxiety. Accordingly I will bow out of this thread but might sticky beak in occasionally to check on you. Have appreciated you all and hope the Colgate men are able to reach stability and you will have peace as you care for them.
