Son (22) with schizophrenia

Son (22) with schizophrenia

Living with someone who suffers from schizophrenia is very difficult. Even medicated it seems he lives in a different world and stares a lot whilst smoking cigarettes like a steam train.
Sleeps during the day, spooks around at night.
Any advice about healthy diet, less coffee and smokes, is ignored.
He will never live a productive life.
We've lost family members close to us on the way because of his behaviour and them not understanding mental illness.
Ofcourse I worry about our future.
I need to be single as no other man can live with us.
I need to work full time to provide a roof over our heads and pay the bills. Without me, he'll be homeless, jobless and suicidal as his paranoia would kick in, specially when he thinks the meds are only given to him as he is a guinea pig and 'they' are trying to change his DNA...
I've always wanted children but no one never told me how tough it would be if a mental illness strikes the 'Brady bunch' family image with a thunderbolt.
A medal to anyone who cares for someone suffering mental illness.
They need all the help and support they can get. They deserve better too. Mental illness you don't see from the outside, my son looks like a healthy good looking young man but has no future. Maybe with support and someone pushing him out of his shell but some have tried and given up.
I have given up a marriage and another 7 years old relationship and noe bought a small unit to care for my son, indefinite. We have no other family here as Migrated here in 1987.

My love for my son is very deep and I am so proud of him he went to hospital last year and still takes his depot shot every month. However, I feel anxious and worry all the time. He has applied for DSP (disability pension) but he tells me if he gets rejected, and 'they' want him to work, he will stop the depot needle. It takes his motivation and energy away, He knows he can't work 8-5pm, neither with or without meds.
My good sense of humour is slowly fading but where there's life, there's hope, right?
Thanks for reading my story.

Australia has reciprocal Health Care Agreements with New Zealand, Ireland, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Italy, Malta, Belgium and Slovenia.

For those coming to us:
Visitors from these countries are entitled to medically necessary treatment while they are in Australia, comprising public hospital care (as public patients), Medicare benefits and drugs under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). Visitors must enroll with the Department of Human Services to receive benefits. A passport is sufficient for public hospital care and PBS drugs.

In Oz a visitor can get a Medicare card by going to a Medicare office to get rebates if they see a gp but only need show their passport to get public hospital treatment.

I don't know the practicalities of how it works overseas in return.

@Former-Member
we'll soon find out ....
i booked a room for us in Doha, where we can rest for 8 hours whilst waiting for our transfer. I think this is right thing to do.
Relax, chill out, it will be all right....

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

Today my ex partner contacted me, and I just happened to be in the area, so I called in. He said he had something for me I had to pick up as it was mine and I left it there.

He invited me onto the property (been there for at least 7 years) and showed me his new paved areas he had been working on.

He also wanted me to come inside, he wanted to show me my favorite dog who was inside. (we had many dogs together, I left them all behind to be with my son)

He still has our photo up, and all the dogs were just so happy to see me. I hadn't been back for months, and they still remembered me.... It was too much and I cried, my ex hugged me, he asked if I wanted a seat and talk what was wrong? I said I was ok, didnt want to talk to him about anything and left.

Really? I mean we broke up because he didnt want to have anything to do with my son and his Colgate, so why try to make things right? He said he always liked my mum and dad and he hopes I wish them all the best and blah blah blah.

When I returned home, I send him a text apologizing for chucking the sads, and that it was good to see he had kept himself busy and I saw him happy. He said just be yourself. it was good to see you, and he isnt entirely happy as doesnt have anyone to share his life with.

I said I was happy my son is now safe. Living with me. and compliant.

He agreed stability was one step. and then he continues on to say: However I have given up on thinking what is best for him. That is for others to do. As has been always I need to keep my mind clear and steer away from life's issues otherwise I can be a pain to those near and dear...

Then he continues on to say there is an event near where we live, we have been before and its free.

Well, it looks like he is missing me and wants my friendship real bad. He kept saying he still loves me, always has, always will but he can not deal with my son.

I made up my mind last year, I cannot be with someone who does not accept my son for who he is.

The hug was nice though....

What a day

Re: Son (22) with schizophrenia

My son had a good day he said, we went for two walks he initiated but at night he said his head was going 100 miles an hour and he wanted to try the sleeping pill the Psych prescribed him for his travels.

So he took one at six pm, now its 10pm and he is still awake. We laughed about it, he says he needs something serious to knock him out, but I said it will kick in soon enough and you will sleep for hours.

lets see what happens, it might be good he tried it before we actually fly out, so we can see what it does.

hope you all have a good weekend.

Backatchya @Former-Member, and all our happy little 'Colgate' family here. Can't believe its 11am and I've done nothing. Can hardly walk with my back today, ouchy. Such is life. Light duties for me. But have a study to do for my support group tomorrow, maybe some cooking. What's everyone else doing? Someone said on another thread that they have public hosl tomorrow, long w'end somewhere.
Cheers 🌷🌿
