Recognition for the work that carers do

Recognition for the work that carers do

Hello people in Carers Forum Land. I've never ventured over here from the lived experience forum and I'm feeling all shy. However, this article landed in my inbox this morning and I thought it would be of interest over here. I don't actually have any family or friends myself, but I know that carers do an amazing job in supporting those that they love. If anyone here does happen to feel like adopting someone with Borderline Personality Disorder, I'm open to it. I mean, what could be more fun than having someone (or another someone) with BPD in your life! Here's the link to the article: http://theconversation.com/heres-how-much-it-would-cost-the-government-to-pay-everyone-who-takes-care-of-family-with-mental-illness-74760?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20March%2023%202017%20-%2070265274&utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20March%2023%202017%20-%2070265274+CID_3e0041eadb6d09286518efab7811c5a4&utm_source=campaign_monitor&utm_term=Heres%20how%20much%20it%20would%20cost%20the%20government%20to%20pay%20everyone%20who%20takes%20care%20of%20family%20with%20mental%20illness

@Phoenix_Rising

I missed you Friday night, as your adopted carer (and as B-G says one to be detested) I suspect you may have had some feelings about the absence of a moderator but thought it best to let you retreat to your shell without interference. I am sure along the way your turtle whisperer will help you with this.

I would like you to know that your input into Friday night provides joy and ROTFL to other participants (including myself), something that can be lacking or absent for many. Laughter is often the best medicine, free from side effects (unless one has bladder problems or us drinking something which spits out everywhere).

Point of message: your feelings are acknowledged and you were missed.

Just wanting to check if you had any thoughts about me referring to some specific carer stuff like the last message - would you rather I didn't?

Hey @Phoenix_Rising
Are you ok?

@Phoenix_Rising

I have ventured across to the other side as I have been a bit worried about you.

Would you be amenable to meeting up with other Aspies, there are groups in Sydney if you think it would be helpful you could google them. I would understand if you would not feel comfortable doing so.

I know that mental health advocacy etc is one of your things, is there someone in the group there that you could ask to join you for coffee?

Another avenue for connection is through peer support - Wellways put on programs where you could meet people.

https://www.wellways.org

You would need to be very brave to put yourself out there but there is potential for connection.

I hold onto hope defiantly and am sending you some via one of the waves, I hope you are able to grasp onto it.

Hi Darcy,

Sorry I've been a bit AWOL. I'm working at limiting my time in Forum Land a bit and I never seem to get around to all the threads that I want to! I have just started another marking gig, so that is going to consume my time and energy for the next few weeks. Violin is going super well, and I had my first ever private yoga lesson this morning which you can read about if you venture over to the great yoga adventure.

I have no issues at all hearing you talk about carer stuff. I love the fact that Mr Darcy has you advocating for him and I love that you know first-hand how dysfunctional the system is (not to mention how extra super scary it is for those of us that have no family or friends to advocate for us).

A big part of my muddle is that I don't fit in aspie world anymore than I fit in mental health world. Here people super get the trauma stuff but not the aspie stuff, there they get the aspie stuff but not the trauma stuff.

I have zero interest in meeting people for the sake of meeting people. It isn't the meeting part that is the issue, it's the getting-them-to-stick-around-after-they-get-to-know-me part that is the reason for my social isolation. The nature of my muddle makes interpersonal relationships very tricky.

Thanks for holding out hope. I am really struggling at the moment. There is a lot of my muddle that I don't share here in Forum Land and realistically, the chances of me finding someone who can help me with it, who is also willing and able to work with me long-term, and who I can afford, are very very small. So...holding out hope that I will find someone is probably akin to holding out hope that you might win a million dollars at lotto if you played every week - not impossible, but so unrealistic you don't exactly plan your life around it happening.

Super big thank you for caring about me. Yes, I did not cope well at all with the absence of a moderator at Friday Feast (the reasons for that relate to some of the muddle that I choose not to share in Forum Land). I fully intend to be at FF this week.

I hope you and Mr Darcy are going ok at the moment.

Hey @Phoenix_Rising

Will certainly hover over the yogi bear thread to find out about your private lesson and would be more than amenable to listening to your latest violin piece on you tube. I do hope that you are enjoying the marking and that you find the assignments interesting.

Hear what you are saying about feeling as though you don't fully belong in either MH or Aspie camps and hear what you are saying about meeting people and yes there are many things that are best left out of forum land.

Count down on for Mr Darcy's surgery (next week), he is not coping very well at all - not only because of the pain but the aetiology behind it. I am nervous that one of the two drugs he is on has to be tapered down pre-op, to be restarted post anaesthetic - something I will need to keep an eye on. I am hoping that once hip replacement is in situ and acute pain dispensed with that he will be able to continue with recovery from his acute episode and that relapse can be averted, time will tell.

I did get a leaflet about conciliation in the paperwork about my complaint so have been looking up stuff on mediation and have started preparation, can only do so much as I need to see what response I get. Really glad I have done this as it has given me some clarity, whether or not it will be enough to effect change remains to be seen.

Thinking of you especially @Phoenix_Rising as you learn to adapt to life without P's purrs.

@Phoenix_Rising

Congratulations on becoming a community guide.

Mr D's surgery was postponed until next week, started tapering down one of his drugs yesterday which is to be restarted post surgery. Am a bit nervous for a number of reasons but hoping for a good outcome. He appears to have turned the corner psychologically (he was most distraught about his need for it), hoping he continues to improve once he is no longer in pain.

Re: Recognition for the work that carers do

Good morning @Phoenix_Rising

How are you going? I read up on your private yoghurt class 👍.

How are you and S coping? both P &S boys? We found when we had 2F dogs, one would occasionally be quite nasty to the other to maintain top dog status (understood where the term b'tch originated). Since having M-F there has been no vying for supremacy. Don't know if it is similar in the cat world.

Had to smile when I saw you had been appointed a CG, wondering if it would affect your time on the forum (says teasingly but gently). Seriously though, I hope you find it rewarding, you have not so hidden talent when it comes to communicating with other forumites.

Things all set for Mr D's surgery this week. He crashed emotionally Friday night, hence my very limited feasting. He has had to temporarily go off his mood stabiliser as a precaution in case of clash with anaesthetic and I am suspecting he might be heading towards hype already (or a mixed episode). I will certainly be finding out who I liaise with at hospital re: meds as I need to ensure agreed plan in relation to psych meds is not stuffed up, certainly don't want changes to be made by some fiddling Freddie, as my old mum would say.

Speaking of fiddlers, good to hear your violin progressing well.

Must get going, need to down some brekky before taking dogs to kennel, have booked them in for a few days as I plan on staying close to hospital.

Take care
Darcy

Re: Recognition for the work that carers do

@Phoenix_Rising
Mr D had surgery, they will need to call in psych treating team to monitor psych meds as reacting with pain meds. I am very nervous - saw the registrar in the corridor - she will almost certainly know of my complaint, I ducked so she would not see me, but then thought there is no reason for me not to hold my head high and I will be polite and respectful, hoping I can do it.
