Recognition for the work that carers do

Recognition for the work that carers do

Hello people in Carers Forum Land. I've never ventured over here from the lived experience forum and I'm feeling all shy. However, this article landed in my inbox this morning and I thought it would be of interest over here. I don't actually have any family or friends myself, but I know that carers do an amazing job in supporting those that they love. If anyone here does happen to feel like adopting someone with Borderline Personality Disorder, I'm open to it. I mean, what could be more fun than having someone (or another someone) with BPD in your life! Here's the link to the article: http://theconversation.com/heres-how-much-it-would-cost-the-government-to-pay-everyone-who-takes-care-of-family-with-mental-illness-74760?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20March%2023%202017%20-%2070265274&utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20March%2023%202017%20-%2070265274+CID_3e0041eadb6d09286518efab7811c5a4&utm_source=campaign_monitor&utm_term=Heres%20how%20much%20it%20would%20cost%20the%20government%20to%20pay%20everyone%20who%20takes%20care%20of%20family%20with%20mental%20illness

Diagnosis is one of those things @Phoenix_Rising

I sometimes wonder just how sure pdoc is of Mr Darcy's BPii Dx. He would like to reduce drugs (he is on two), pdoc said she would support a taper down, but does not recommend it - this makes me wonder if the differential of a psychotic disorder is still in her mind. We will wait until after his surgery mid October before doing anything. I have suggested to Mr Darcy that he makes an agreement with pdoc similar to relapse prevention that if mood chart shows deterioration or some other applicable measure (allowing for appropriate withdrawal) that he will resume the medication. That way the pdoc understands we respect her opinion - Mr D has not had a chance at monotherapy and I feel I should support him to do so.

Hi @Phoenix_Rising

I laughed out loud when I read your initial post re:adoption

I am very fortunate in that I have a carer who has kept me alive and pretty much out of trouble since 2009. No mean feat as I'm sure you will understand. Of-course I detest him for it.

I totally get your muddiness and see many similarities in our stories of living with/surviving BPD. I have only just joined the forum and as such haven't shared my story over on the experience side. I should get onto it pronto though as I have a habit of destroying tech devices that never understand me and can't read my mind!!!

Truly there is insufficient recognition for the work carers do and obviously there is so much more to recognition than money alone. I should know, I am one of the worst offenders. In my defence I am afterall, me.

I wish you luck in your adoption quest. Cheers,

B_G

@Phoenix_Rising

Unless she has already received enlightenment in the yogi bear thread, do you think we should let @soul know that Adge is a bloke?

Re: Recognition for the work that carers do

Did I refer to Adge as a she @Former-Member. Oops if I did.

Re: Recognition for the work that carers do

Think we have all done it @soul hoping for discretion by popping the note here. Somewhere in this thread I consulted @Phoenix_Rising on this very issue and she gave me the low down on a few of the mods.

Hi @Bat_Girl, It is super nice to meet you.

That is so awesome that you have such a super supportive carer. I hope you enjoy hanging out here in Forum Land. This is the only thread I generally visit in Carer's world. I find that if I venture around here too much I start to struggle with big feelings as I listen to how difficult it is supporting someone with BPD. Mostly I hang out here.

Some of us have also just started a thread about dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) which is here if that is something you feel might interest you. It is very much a brand new adventure, so we'll see how it goes.

@Former-Member Diagnosis is definitely not an exact science when it comes to mental health. Anyone can buy the DSM-V and go through the same box ticking exercise that psychiatrists, psychologists etc. do. I know the constant message we are told is that only "professionals" should diagnose, but seriously, how hard is it to read a list of symptoms in a book and see which set of symptoms best fits the presenting issues. I'm sure you know as well as I do that you can go to a dozen different "experts" and get a dozen different labels - grrrrrrrrrr. The fact that I spent sixteen years seeing a bazillion different mental health professionals and none of them picked up the tiny detail of AUTISM definitely shapes my views on the issue of diagnosis.

@soul yes you did refer to Adge as "she". I was contemplating how to navigate this tricky situation, hence my recent commentary on men in yoga classes. That was me being subtle.

Re: Recognition for the work that carers do

My bad about Adge then @Phoenix_Rising @Former-Member. Hope he wasn't offended. The majority of people in yoga classes are women. We ARE the more flexible gender. Apparently it has something to do with the ability to be pregnant and carry babies and not topple over so our spine has to be able to do tricky things..

Re: Recognition for the work that carers do

@soul gave a couple of us a bit of amusement

@Phoenix_Rising am hearing you loud and clear re diagnosis.

Have read a few articles about it with many views being expressed from questioning a need for it through to a Dx being imperative. I do lean toward the latter as there needs to be a premise on which to base treatment.

How are you going? How did the marking go? How is the violin coming along and how are the puddy tats?

Re: Recognition for the work that carers do

@Phoenix_Rising
I have lodged my complaint and I believe it is to be sent to treating team for response, probably won't hear anything for about a month. Lack of communication is blatantly apparent but I do not want this to overshadow the core issues I have. I am not sure if I should get help from an advocacy group if I am called upon to attend any conciliation rather than do it in my own. I need a turtle advocado.
