Since I’m going to hospital I assume they are going to knock me out @creative_writer . My friend had his done with a mild anaesthetic and not in a hospital, but at the surgeon’s office.

I imagine your GP has figured out why you were triggered.

@GezzaP it’s different at surgeon office. I only have local anaesthetic at the surgeon office, but my surgery was relatively small. He said I was lucky the cyst wasn’t so big. It still looked disgusting once it was out. He showed me but it’s not for the faint heart.

Clinicians aren’t meant to assume trauma types. I have a social work degree and I am currently studying mental health. Social workers and other mental health clinicians are discouraged from making assumptions, even if thoughts do cross our minds. I would imagine it applies to GPs too.

I gave him enough to help him connect the appointment (with female GP) and recent flare up of ptsd symptoms

Yes I realise that GPs probably are discouraged from making

assumptions but they are human @creative_writer .
Cataract surgery is usually straight forward but I assume when I mentioned the bipolar anxiety he thought it best to sedate me more.

@GezzaP I wouldn’t be surprised if SA has crossed his mind, because it’s very underreported in women in healthcare, but he won’t assume it. The statistics are very high for SA, unfortunately.

If I was working as a mental health clinician and a client with trauma disclosed they felt triggered by this type of appointment, it probably would cross my mind briefly.

It did feel emotionally loaded to talk about what happened during the appointment with the other GP. I remember leaving the appointment almost in tears.

He advised me to bring my psych appointment forward, he must have thought I was super dsregulated. I am just waiting to hear back for a sooner appointment. I probably wouldn’t have moved it forward otherwise. Sometimes I tell myself I’ll push through it myself, even though that often makes things worse.

MH can affect how anxious someone feels about surgery. My mum has a lot of anxiety too, she came with me during the appointment. My surgeon gave me a sensory toy. He was so nice and geeky. I hope your surgeon is nice and gentle with you

I hope you can get an earlier appt with your psych @creative_writer .
I think the surgeon will be fine. I’m more concerned about how I’ll be. I just wish it could be over with. It is these days waiting that are hard. I will suffer on Thursday not being able to eat after 9am. Admission is at 3.30 I’ll probably get a headache. And I’m not allowed to smoke that will be excruciating. Yes I know it is an awful habit. It’s a curse.

@GezzaP it can be hard not being able to eat or smoke. It can also be anxiety provoking waiting for a surgery. Anything that helps you feel a bit less anxious in the moment?

It would be good if I could just sleep the day away but I have an acupuncture appt in the morning @creative_writer. Maybe I should cancel it, but on the other hand I’ll get an hour occupied. My friend is coming around lunch time he will eat before he comes. He said he won’t smoke around me. I would like to go early to the hospital to wait there and hence make it easier to resist the temptation to smoke.

@GezzaP sometimes it can hard to know whether to keep something, especially since it can be a good distraction. How are you doing this morning?

Re: Thursday Coffee and Chat-- 28th may 2026

I’m okayish today @creative_writer . Walked up shop again to get some more

of a new cat food since my puss ate all of it last night. Was a bit late walking for me. I have come out of hypomania and flipped over into anxiety and feeling a bit low. I guess the surgery is the trigger for this plus the change to one med, Tempted to adjust med but should check with psych. Problem

is she’s only available Tuesdays. GP is on leave until 15th June. It is impossible to get a psych here in Adelaide and GPs prefer psych to look after psych meds.

How are you today? Have you been able to do test?

Re: Thursday Coffee and Chat-- 28th may 2026

@GezzaP I hope you are able to check in with your psych soon. When do you have your next appointment? In my experience, GPs don’t feel super comfortable changing up bipolar meds. I did once have a GP who was willing to get me off my meds, but I don’t think it was ethical for her to suggest that. I’ve had periods where I thought I didn’t need meds, and I convinced myself they were trying to control me through meds. I didn’t want to be controlled by other people. I don’t think I was thinking straight at that point in time.

I’m still having a somatic flashback and haven’t done the test. I don’t think I’m going to do it for a while
