Re: Thursday Coffee and Chat-- 28th may 2026

My next appt with psychi should be next Tuesday I think @creative_writer . She

only does outpatient consults on Tuesdays normally at least with me. I think I’m swinging from hypomania through anxiety into a low. I have been having many mood swings through and since menopause.

As a former academic I have extreme rational thinking and accept that I must take my meds. Every so often I don’t like it but I accept that I must take them. My mother had bipolar which I’ve inherited so I must take my meds. I have had psychosis twice the first time I was detained. The second time I agreed to go to hospital. So the logical conclusion is that I have bipolar type 1 and I need to take my meds. I just think it is time to adjust the dose of one of the meds back to my usual dose.

I’m sorry to hear you are having flashbacks and can’t do the test. I hope you can cope sooner than later as yeast infections are very uncomfortable.

@GezzaP I hope you can talk to your psychiatrist about the menopause side of things too.

I think sometimes people don’t realise hypomania can also impair judgement. I’ve come to accept my meds, but I don’t have those type of hypomanic episodes anymore where I would feel overly confident and become argumentative. I did have those impairing hypomanic episodes when I was being SA. I had multiple experiences of SA. Now I either get depressed or depression with hypomanic features.

I don’t exactly know if I have a yeast infection. It’s hard to know without testing it. It is possible it could come back negative like last time, but it’s hard to be certain. I do experience chronic discomfort, but I’ve sort of learnt to live with it. It’s hard differentiating between flashbacks and actual medical symptoms

@creative_writer I have raised menopause and aging with bipolar to my psych but she didn’t say one way or the other. I guess because everyone is different.

My sister complains that I am being like dad miserable and complaining as I get older. He had GAD and depression as I mentioned previously. Thanks for your understanding sis. Yes I’m being sarcastic.

My sister recently had to get in touch with me as I gave her my old car, but she has bought a new one. We had to transfer the registration to her and I had to fill in a disposal of vehicle form online. She wished me luck on my surgery but I don’t know if she will talk to me again or whether she will give me half the price of the sale like we agreed. She gets her new car in August apparently.

I know what you mean about psycho-somatic symptoms. My back is always worse when I’m having an episode. But I

have back pain in between episodes too so guess it is physical.

Don’t know what I can say about you doing the test beyond I’m trying to understand why you can’t do it.

@GezzaP it is very individual too. I've heard hormonal changes can affect bipolar, you always hear about post birth often being a bipolar episode trigger, I would imagine menopause would have an impact. Your sister sounds like a jerk, her comments aren't very helpful.

Psychosomatic symptoms are pretty common with mental health. My bipolar has triggered really bad migraines in the past. My somatic flashbacks can be pretty gruesome because I do re-experience body sensations, including the ones that are hard to talk about. Last time I did a swab, I was reminded of the gruesome body sensations that occurred during the trauma

My sister is totally lacking in understanding and empathy @creative_writer . I put on weight probably due to one of my meds and menopause. She asked when the baby was due. She must have thought it was funny but I was upset. I know it is partly self inflicted because I don’t eat all that healthy some of the time and I drink occasionally. In fact I feel like a drink right now, but know I shouldn’t. Not sure what to eat tonight thinking should have a big meal so less hungry tomorrow hopefully.

I’m sorry about your migraines and reliving the trauma sensations. I’m lost for words really. SA is so terrible.

@GezzaP that’s not a very mature thing to say. It’s awful she says things like that to you. It’s understandable how meds and hormones would affect weight. We need a society where woman aren’t criticised for their body shape, so many women have poor body image as a result.

I’m lucky my migraines don’t get as bad anymore. It used to be a lot worse. The somatic flashbacks were getting better, they had just been a spike recently. I’m currently working on calming my nervous system with my psych

I’m so pleased that your migraines are not as bad now @creative_writer . It’s good that you have found a psych who is helping you too. I have to look for a psych who specialises in bipolar 1. See if I can afford it have my doubts if can. They are so expensive even with a medicare rebate.

Re: Thursday Coffee and Chat-- 28th may 2026

@GezzaP it took me a while to find my current psych. I do think even then therapy is a process, it’s not easy disclosing everything in session one. I have grown up believing I had to keep emotions to myself, I was independent and it worked till it didn’t. It’s taken me a long time to feel somewhat okay with reaching out for support, but I do still feel like I’m meant to be able to handle it alone.

I hope you are able to find a psychologist that specialises in bipolar, it makes a huge difference when they can tailor therapy. Therapy is very expensive. I know there are lower cost and free services, but I prefer choosing my therapist

I don’t think I can afford therapist of my own choosing @creative_writer . I fell asleep watching the news missed weather oh well will look on phone. Don’t want to sleep this early as I’ll wake up too early. I guess it’s a good sign that I’m not wide awake.

@GezzaP have you used up your Medicare rebated sessions? Do you have private health?

What are you up to this evening?
