Sensory Resets - What's Yours?

Sensory Resets - What's Yours?

Hello everyone! 😊💚

Wishing you all a comfortable and peaceful Tuesday. 💚

I was thinking this morning about how certain sounds and smells can completely shift a mood, like the smell of rain on dry ground (petrichor), the crackle of a fire, or the sound of waves crashing against rocks.🌧🔥🌊

When things feel a bit too loud or overwhelming, I find that focusing on a specific "sensory reset" really helps me feel a bit more grounded. For me, it's usually petrichor or the sound of wind through a tree's leaves, both of which are incredibly soothing and make me appreciate nature. 🌲

I'd really love to hear from you all - what is a "sensory reset" for you? Is there a particular sound, sight or smell that helps you find a moment of peace? (I suppose you could also do taste, like how sour lollies are for me, a huge sensory reset.) 💚

Re: Sensory Resets - What's Yours?

I have only recently got back my driving confidence after many years off the road without a car. In recent weeks I took the step of a longer drive than I am used to and visited the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens at Sherbrooke, @MatchaToad. I'm a Melburnian. I was back amongst nature, and the giant trees were humbling. Magnificent. They left me hungry for more adventures and more of Nature. As for my favourite composer, I guess I would have to say Handel. I'm an opera lover, too. I was quite taken aback some time ago, when I found my bus driver was playing classical music. It was unexpected and so calming.

Are you still guerilla gardening, @Appleblossom?

@Historylover

A huge congratulations on regaining your driving confidence! That is such a massive step, and what a beautiful reward to end up at the Memorial Garden. Those giant trees really do have a way of making you feel like you're in another world. It’s lovely that the experience left you 'hungry' for more. Sometimes, nature is exactly the fuel we need. Handel's music is also a lovely choice, and it's actually quite refreshing to hear that your bus driver was playing classical music; it sounds like a perfectly timed moment of calm.

Congrats and well done @Historylover with getting your driving confidence back.

I have certain situations where I haven’t been confident driving for last 6yrs. I mentioned it to my new psychologist during out last appointment. This one’s views sound lot more positive than the previous psychologist. Fingers crossed. 🤞🤞

Ahhh, I love this concept @MatchaToad!

Rain and a crackling fire, mmmm, I feel relaxed just thinking about this. 😍

A candle in a dark room with some downtempo music playing is always soothing for me too. What about you?

Many people know I really like ASMR (the relaxing activity, no talking/eating kind - because chewing has the opposite effect 🥴). Anyway, I find this reaallly soothing, especially when I am trying to sleep: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGVxdJmCspQ

Let me know if I am the only one... 👀😂

Haha you are definitely not alone! ASMR is honestly such a lifesaver for sleep and relaxation. I'm much the same when it comes to not liking chewing sounds, it's honestly amazing how a sound can be either perfectly soothing or the exact opposite! A dark room with a candle sounds like a lovely, peaceful ritual. I also really love soaking in a bath in candle light, it brings so much comfort, I think the only annoying part is actually leaving the bath because it's too nice haha. I will thank you though for sharing the video here, it's very calming and aesthetically pleasing!

I love that we're all finding what works for everyone here 😊

The sound of waves is certainly a wonderful sensory reset @Flutterbug9, and it's lovely that you're taking that time for yourself right now to enjoy those wave sounds 🌊

Love the sound of those waves @Flutterbug9

@Historylover Only pick up rubbish there at the moment. Been flat out with many other projects, which is probably a good sign. Thanks for remembering. Hope your sport is going well.

@MatchaToad Its a great thread idea.

Yes, @Flutterbug9, I have had a car for the past two years but stayed within a 5 km bubble. I had become so unfamiliar with the roads and where everything was, and in which direction. I was rather bewildered by it all. It feels so good to be more confident again. Thank goodness for Google maps! It feels so good to be out and about again.
