Sensory Resets - What's Yours?

Sensory Resets - What's Yours?

Hello everyone! 😊💚

Wishing you all a comfortable and peaceful Tuesday. 💚

I was thinking this morning about how certain sounds and smells can completely shift a mood, like the smell of rain on dry ground (petrichor), the crackle of a fire, or the sound of waves crashing against rocks.🌧🔥🌊

When things feel a bit too loud or overwhelming, I find that focusing on a specific "sensory reset" really helps me feel a bit more grounded. For me, it's usually petrichor or the sound of wind through a tree's leaves, both of which are incredibly soothing and make me appreciate nature. 🌲

I'd really love to hear from you all - what is a "sensory reset" for you? Is there a particular sound, sight or smell that helps you find a moment of peace? (I suppose you could also do taste, like how sour lollies are for me, a huge sensory reset.) 💚

I love the real and natural kinds of sensory reset that you mention. Thank you @MatchaToad

I am very similar. Also the sounds of crickets, the sight of the moon and stars, my cats, family, gardening and music and moments of genuine care.

For me, it's unexpected classical music, @MatchaToad; an abundance of greenery in my surroundings; the sight of gigantic trees in their natural environment.

I love that you included 'moments of genuine care' in your list. There's something so grounding about a sincere connection with someone. And the sight of the moon and stars, there's a real peace in looking up and remembering how big and beautiful the world and universe are! Do you find that gardening helps you switch off from day-to-day stress, too?

There is something so humbling about gigantic trees, isn't there? They have such a steady, ancient energy. I find that being around them really puts things into perspective. And I love the idea of unexpected classical music, like stumbling across a beautiful piece when you least expect it. Do you have a favourite composer or a specific type of greenery that you find most grounding?

Haha ... re gardening @MatchaToad I was not surrounded by gardens as a kid... mostly concrete and inner city. As a young mum, yard work was just another heavy burden, but gradually over the last 25 years, the healing capacity of gardening has been life saving and grounding. I can do it in my time and my way. I am doing responsible work for my household and my street, whilst also finding many moments of insight into the realisites of life, and also seeing natural beauty.

That is so powerful. Thank you for sharing that journey. It's amazing how something that once felt like a burden can, over time, transform into a lifeline of sorts. I love that you mentioned doing it 'in your own time and your way' - there is so much freedom in finding a space where you get to set the pace. It sounds like your garden has become a real teacher for those 'realities of life' you mentioned.

I find peeing in the back yard under the stars is resetting

Haha, well that is certainly one way to get some fresh air! I suppose there's nothing like the open sky and the stars to make a moment to feel a bit more grounded. It's definitely a 'back to basics' kind of reset!

I find being out in nature calming. Something about the quietness of the tress and the different smells. Am thankful there are couple areas of natural bushland within short drive of where I live.

for me the best area is the coast, primarily one of 2 particular areas. Both areas I can sit for hours listening to the sound of the waves on the tide, the waves as they crash against the rocks.

There is something so hypnotic about waves crashing against rocks; it's almost like the heart has its own heartbeat. I completely agree about the coast, it has a way of making everything else feel a bit smaller and more manageable. It's wonderful that you have those two specific spots you can rely on for that kind of peace.
