Something’s not right

When the outside doesn’t match the inside

When the outside doesn’t match the inside

Not sure if many others can relate, but I nearly always ‘present’ rather ok. Like I look ok. I dress ok. My hair is brushed. And apart from when I am beyond the point of crisis and often already in hospital or done something, I physically look ok. But this unfortunately means that I’m dismissed a lot. I struggle with words at the best of time, even when I can verbally say that I am not ok, I’m still dismissed. There have been many a time where I have attempted to communicate that I’m not ok, that I need support but ignored only to end up in crisis and in hospital and then I get asked why didn’t I say something.
I do not at all mean any disrespect but I sit in the wait room at community mental health and see patients one after another come through the door and I look nothing like them.

but how do I manage this? I am so very often left feeling so frustrated cause the inside mess and torture that I am currently trying to deal with just doesn’t match the outside of me.

@Bow it was a mental health wellbeing hub, they offer various different supports like walk-in, counsellors, psychologists etc.

Completely get that, I've complained to a few and it's always the same response. It's honestly just not good enough, it shouldn't be this hard to get help and support.

That's so unfair that you can't get support for your ED and to be left without a psychologist isn't acceptable. This is why people end up in crisis when supports are ripped away without any warning. I'm sorry you haven't been able to get the right support that you deserve sweet, I'm really hoping that you'll find that support soon and things can start getting better for you.

Nothing to apologise for, it's good to get things out. It's just really eye opening to see how many people have been let down when it comes to trying to get support for various mental health conditions.

Sending you hugs sweet ❤️

Re: When the outside doesn’t match the inside

Haha @AlwaysMyself sad that so many relate.
that’s the thing eh…. We might be surviving by doing certain things and mh folks think that we are doing ok, but merely surviving is just not sustainable long term. Shouldn’t even have to be medium term, cause it’s absolutely brutal. And it’s so very often that when we are made to keep surviving by doing things that are exhausting, that aren’t really helpful, that we are pushed over the edge and people’s lives come to an end. Urgh. If only.

oh I’ll have all my digits crossed that this peer support service is of help and that they will take you on. I was going to say a peer support/ support worker type service could be helpful. My SW is generally great. Calls me every day. Couple of home visits a week, more if needed. Comes with me to appointments, they run some groups too. They have just bought on a peer worker, she has been texting me while my SW is away. I don’t know her well and am too scared to ask for much more than a couple of text messages. It’s hard to be vulnerable with people you don’t know.

does your mum rely on you alot? Is she elderly? My mum lives with us. She’s 70 this year but still fairly active. My step dad passed away a couple of years ago. So mums great when I end up in hospital, but it is a lot for her, especially getting my D to and from school and visiting me cause my mum does not drive. I’ve been needing an admission, but keep putting it off.

im glad the drop in service is helpful for you. We have a safe haven here and they have also recently opened one of them Medicare mental health clinics. I struggle to get myself to those places though. I’ve thought about just going to my local community mh centre and just sitting. Would help me keep myself safe.

my old psych leaving ended in a pretty big mess. I was super angry. I just didn’t understand how they could do that to people, just leave so many patients without support. She asked me what I would have liked to happen…. I said, well fill your maternity leave position. She was like that takes time and paper work. She’s pregnant! They had what at least 6-7mths to organise it! There was a whole lotta other crap that went down and I ended up walking out. She then cancelled my last 2 appointments! I’m just on a wait list now. Goodness knows how long I will have to wait. I see my case manager tomorrow so maybe she will have some good news for me. I can’t afford to go private unfortunately, so waiting for a psych with community mh is the best I’m gonna get.

yeah unfortunately pdocs with community mh move around a lot. They will do a rotation in the hospital, then at the health centre and then they move elsewhere. It sucks. Because of one of my meds, a full psychiatrist has to write my scripts they are often able to stay a little longer. I’ve had 6 pdocs in the last 3yrs. It’s good when my case manager can meet with new pdocs and go over my file and meds beforehand. My SW comes too. But yes most of them, the registrars are all newbies.

haha… most people that I talk to about my gp want to go to her! My SW wants to as well! She really is so good! She put me onto my dietitian. She got me my ED diagnosis with a professor psychiatrist who researches and specializes in EDs.

id really just like to not feel so alone @AlwaysMyself trauma anniversary in a couple of weeks and then another in Feb. but the lead ups to it are just as bad. Absolutely no pressure or expectations cause we all have our own journeys. Medication withdrawal is horride!

dinner time here so gotta run

Re: When the outside doesn’t match the inside

@Bow glad you have a peer worker while the SW is away - even if it takes a bit to warm up to them and develop trust. I'm glad your SW is able to come a few times a week and help go to appts also 😊. This service for me said their support srarts with 1hr a week initially, but decrease over time i think. But i think anything is better than none. Although yesterday and today went well, no major medication-withdrawal symptoms and mood was just "normal" for me (not worse).

I moved back in with my mum because I wasnt coping. She is soon to retire, and generally in good health. She likes having me there though as social company, which is why she suggested i move back in with her. She also supports her mother a bit too though, with visits twice a week. Sometimes i help out too in place of her. My grandma is in good health by very elderly and lonely living alone. Most people are amazed she lives alone (not in a retirement village) when they know her age!

Here with you @Bow , tag me any time (even if i am delayed in reading/replying). I wish there was more i could do. Sometimes i wish we could have a voice-chat place for when its hard to read/type but feel up to realtime listening and chatting. Too hard to moderate and anonymity, i know. Just wish there was a way to help connect and respond in realtime easier.

I'm sorry that you've experienced a lot of trauma; i'm sorry that it is still so very very difficult both daily and even more so with annual reminders. I really hope you get assigned a new psych soon, and one that is experienced with both ED and trauma i hope.

If talking about the feelings or thoughts over the upcoming months helps, please know i am willing and you can always tag me without fear or triggering me or without fear of being judged for anything said. You deserve to be heard, if you want to be. You deserve to be safely held. Ypu deserve to be supported in your process.

Yeah, it sounds like @Bow was clarifying your question @Dk5 . Are you asking whether her support worker is for mental health?
