Talking through trauma and PTSD

The me no one knows - SI warning

The me no one knows - SI warning

I’ve made this space to have somewhere safe to talk and share things.

to chat with every one who has shown concern about and for me.

I have spent almost all my life masking, from as far back as primary school (possibly younger).

almost no one knows the real me. Not sure if I even know the real me.

my past is filled with lots of darkness. People I’ve tried to speak with during my life either don’t believe me or don’t want to know

@AlwaysMyself @Bunniekins @Captain24 @Cuddlebear @rav3n @Jynx

hiding behind the mask pretending nothing is wrong. Putting on brave face whilst inside I’m a shattered pieces. Feeling lost and completely alone. No one wants anything to do with me. Relatives only contact when they want something. Going to bed every night hoping to never wake again

Re: The me no one knows - SI warning

Morning @Flutterbug9 , checking in with you because I care and sitting with you in the hurt, frustration, anger and tears. Sounds a little bit like my friday-night sense of pain around where to be able to talk about these topics with people who genuinely understand it and can listen to it when I need support when other things are not available.

Because I trust you so much and the other people who I have seen posting on your thread also, I am willing to tell you directly what supports I have found helpful (Moderator Edit).

The easiest place for me to speak openly on how I really feel is through an Alternatives to Suicide (Alt2Su) group. I don't know how the other ones are, but the one that I go to is really really open and flexible and it is OK to say anything except generally not sharing "methods". But it is even OK to talk about any feelings/thoughts of plans - and without any fear of having emergency services called and put under involuntary admission. They realise/know that just because people may have a maybe-in-the-future plan it doesn't mean they are in immediate danger (and even if someone was, the model is that they can't do anything -- it can be 100% anonymous without name or location). I know this probably sounds "risky" to a lot of clinical services, but most of the people attending are hesitant to talk to crisis lines because of fear of having emergency services called because they have a plan even if they are calling because they don't want to enact it but just need to talk about the distress.

It is also OK to come and just listen without video, without a real name, etc and listen to others if that it helpful for you and/or until you feel safe to be able to speak. There is also the option to use the chat box in Zoom instead of verbalising if that is easier and better for feeling anonymous too.
i've been going for 6 months now, and never had a bad experience in the group.

Some people pop in only when they are distressed / something has happened. Others like me go every week (or close to, as able) for the consistent peer-support and connection.

I've linked to the [moderator edit] - but you do not need to be in their state/region to join. I don't live in [Moderator Edit] - actually some of the facilitators don't either 😉. We even have someone from NZ attend. So if across the ditch are welcome, then anywhere in Aus is obviously welcome too. 😊. I won't be allowed to say "hope to see you there one time", but for your own sake I hope you consider this as a potential place for support - be it a NSW, SA or WA group.

The other place I have found helpful (I forget which region you are in, but I believe other areas also have similar things but may be through a different organisation) - https://stride.com.au/articles/strides-safe-haven-and-safe-spaces

Again, my experience the few times I have been to my closest one is that they have been excellent for talking about whatever I have felt at the time, without judgement, without over-reaction. They will make sure someone is safe before leaving, and would have to notify emergency services I guess if someone left will an immediate intent. But that is the last resort and I reckon that as long as a person was willing to stay with them or with another person (e.g. a friend or family come and pick them up if it were closing time, for example) I don't think it would occur. It is intended to be a service that avoids ED but can provide support for people whether they are feeling depressed and wanting a safe place and chat or if they are in super-urgent-crisis.

I wish we were allowed to talk about what is going on in your thoughts; I want to be there to support you in them and let you safely express them and be heard. 🤗 I wonder if you feel you could write about them in a more "coded" way that would satisfy the comm guidelines but also that us who know (and want to know!) can still support you by understanding the thoughts.

Can I ask if you believe you can get better?

I want to say it is OK to say you don't believe/feel you can currently. Because you are also trying to reach out for support and help in hope that things might change/improve even if you don't believe or see how it will. I believe that is still recovery-oriented because you are still trying. And it gives us an opportunity to help identify opportunities for small hopes and to remind you of them when they are hard to recall or feel. Like with PAT for me, yeah? Intellectually I know & remind myself that if has good evidence of efficacy so far. But I cannot imagine what it is like to not feel or perceive the world how I experience it to date. But having you all around to help remind me of this possibility of improvement is helpful and recovery-oriented.

Oh, sorry, no i just haven't gone back yet to respond re: GD. Is it OK to post here instead about it, because I don't want to distract Cap's thread unless it loops back to it again?

I had a really.... occupied... Saturday so I didn't get to be on the forums really until late at night. I was in a lot of distress that day.

Re: The me no one knows - SI warning

I am aware of being a really talkative person, and that sometimes I talk too much about how my experience relates and my anecdotes. So sometimes I try to withhold to give others space to express more and focus more on sharing their experience, which I why I didn't initially respond to the posts about GD with more of my reflections. And then the convo kinda moved on away from it, and it didn't feel appropriate to post about it amidst the turmoil.

Gender & trauma inter-relate

Content/trigger warning
I related a lot to what J said about their experience with not identifying with being female.
Linking back to their 2 posts for reference:

disconnected from the stereotypical 'female' stuff - refused to wear dresses, was a tomboy, wanted to play with action figures or stuffed animals instead of dolls, etc.

I noticed others also had a preference for stuffed animals too, I am 100% guilty as charged and no longer ashamed even as an adult I still love them. I guess I don't associate them with either gender though 😋.

I didn't know any trans people until I was in my 20's. But I think in my late teens I became aware of medical-transitioning and of non-binary. But that's like Year 12 or after high school age. I went to a Christian high school, so there was never any discussion of genders being not the same as biological/chromosomal sex. All "females" had to wear the female uniform - no option to wear the boys uniform. I remember when I was in Year 12 there was a "female" on my bus that was in Year 7 and if not for their clothing I would not have known they were a female. I think that was the first time I knew of genders not being the same as assigned-at-birth other than as a very severe gender dysphoria syndrome (which I knew existed in rare cases from my mum's work). I overheard someone describing them as "the person who is non-binary but still has to wear the female uniform" (they didn't know their name, they were just trying to refer to them and that was the distinctive thing - it wasn't in a judgemental way at all, more compassionate for the situation of the uniform not matching their identity).

I got involved in the Deaf community when I was 20, and that was my first exposure to an inclusive environment around diverse sexual orientations and genders. At least half my Deaf friends were not hetrosexual - perhaps because those who had at-home children did not tend to go to the community social nights as much, so I met less of them. (Some of my homosexual friends had children, but they were adult children by that time; yes most of my friends were at least 10 years older than me lol, sometimes 35 years). This opened my awareness to trans also, as it was not a taboo thing in the community or the LGBTIQ groups my friends were involved in. The Deaf LGBTIQ group were one of the most welcoming-to-anyone groups I know of -- anyone who would respect their right to their choice was welcome to their events. I don't think I went to any of them, but I knew I was invited and welcome genuinely. 😊

I'm not sure whether or not my thoughts/feelings around having breasts is 'dysphoria' or not. I know it is trauma-initiated though. And now I don't feel distress about it, because I feel safe. But I still don't like having them, and I still wish I could have a double-masectomy to not have them. But I don't need to. They're just annoying, pointless, in the way, physically uncomfortable (for exercise), and just another place to sweat! Their only use is as a surface to rest a plate on, or my mum's dog to perch when being cuddled.

When I was younger I thought that having breast made me a target for sexual abuse/assault, because (hetrosexual) males are attracted to breasts. And it was my belief at the time that most males were sexually driven and thus potential predators/abusers. This is from two separate situations of being sexually abused/assaulted. The second situation strongly reinforced this belief, because it was a stranger (transport driver) who assaulted me whilst I was overseas - even though my father was present also. Don't worry - my dad was furious with the person and as a result refused to pay them (they also did not get us to our destination, we stopped the transport when taken down a dark alley which we figured out was not the right direction -- it was when I was getting out that they opportunistically assaulted me). My dad must have explained what happened to the organisation we were visiting the town to meet with and they explained that unfortunately a lot of the local have been socially taught that "white women" are essentially prostitutes in nature - a stereotype from American media and other sources. And they don't get many white women where we were, so they have no real experience of otherwise. It wasn't said to excuse their behaviour - it was just a factual context surrounding it. It made sense, but I guess it also then fed into my previous experience of abuse to widen it from "that person was perverted and inappropriate" to "males are perverted, and the female body is the target of their sexual desires".

I do recall reading a book at a teenager in which a female pretended to be a male so their could "swap places" with their brother and become a knight (which the brother didn't want to do, and females were not allowed). I remember when I read it and how they would tape their chest to disguise/flatten, I remember feeling that I wish I could do the same.

I don't / can't wear low-cut tops. Even looking at other females in them makes me feel uncomfortable. I can't wear fabrics that sit close on to me - which is why I hated swimming because of swimming costumes. I forced myself to still wear them when I had to - telling myself that no one sees them when you are in the water, and when you are out of the water you can put a towel around your shoulders/body. And I always wore board-shorts. There is no way I would wear a swimsuit without them. For my recent trip with snorkeling I bought a new tank-top swimwear which I found much better. But it was really hard to find one without a low-cut chest also, but i found one in the USA and ordered it online. I felt OK wearing that. 😊 It felt like a normal shirt mostly, just a different fabric but not clingy.

I have always hated wearing bras. I resisted wearing them for as long as I could. But when I started high school I had to. I still don't like them. But I also don't like getting sweat-chaffing. I am happy-jealous of my friend who has small enough breasts that she doesn't have to wear a bra (because she also dislikes them), she gets away with it and no one else realises she doesn't.

Your response to J was spot-on for me too. Anything due to puberty was annoying and resented. I didn't want to be "a female" body I guess. It's not that I wanted to have a male body - I don't feel any want to have a male-appendage either (apparently we can't use the medical anatomy word?); that feels mentally just as awkward as having breasts - even though it doesn't feel "vulnerable".

And that's why I think my experience is a mixture of natural interests (tomboy) being ignored socially (especially through gifts received and in high school social contexts) exacerbated by my trauma which makes me want to reject what makes me physically female. Without trauma I probably would not have feel the call towards non-binary per se, I would just be a "tomboy" in interests (which was allowed in my family - my dad grew up on a farm where his sister was as physical as any of them, she was the eldest). But with the trauma, i actively dislike being a female.

My friends have always accepted me as I am - even if I have different interests to them. And I've always had a mix of both male and female friends. So I haven't felt that "being a female" has prevented me from still being able to be who I am to those who are around me. It's just people who don't actually get to know me or consider my interests in discussions or gifts that I then get distressed about - but that's because they dont actually consider what is "me", they just reflect themselves or gender stereotypes. i see that as an act of not caring, to not actually think about what I like when buying me a gift.

Thank you for letting me talk about this. I'm not sure I've actually ever explained that to someone, that that is how I feel about my gender as a female or my physical body.

Wondering how things have sat with you around the conversations on it?

Back from short walk (needed to check my mailbox in centralised area), chatting with couple people and got to pat their dogs, the “normal aspects” of life @AlwaysMyself

mentioning bushfires in my childhood gave location away unintentionally.

im fairly comfortable about you posting anything on my thread. Hoping you understood my semi vague message regarding tagging on my thread

feeling I can’t say or do anything right. This causing emotional turmoil and distress which is ultimately making things worse and becoming vicious circle

Still awake at 2am this morning, woke 4ish following extreme distressing nightmare (abandonment fears linked), awake since just before 7am alarm.

my SH, worst its ever been (aware I can’t say anymore)

dont know your comfort zones. Eg Your time overseas and the small house, shared care of dogs and your ex, general topics with your past.

Re: The me no one knows - SI warning

Yep, I understand @Flutterbug9 .

I haven't SH in 20 years, but I still have a mental difficult with the thoughts and impulse-feelings to. I choose not to because I have been told it is not healthy. This is not easy because I don't feel that it is unhealthy, it is purely intellectual. Having said that, I do believe there are alternatives to SH which are socially and clinically acceptable that I can do instead -- and someone one of those alternatives is "sitting along without acting" which doesn't help relieve it faster, but means I can still maintain my long-time without SH status to make others happy about it. Any motivating reason is better than none, right?? Just like any delays or reduction in unhealthy actions is better than none (harm minimisation).

I'm happy for you to ask about anything. Sometimes it is good for me to talk about things that are not "comfortable" and make me squirm internally lol. Sometimes that sharing can be healing. And if I don't want to, I will say so directly so that you are not left wondering whether or not I am willing to answer. 😊

For me where I grew up is not where I live, so I don't assume that people's childhood location is their current location. 😊 But yep, I get it. You can always go back and remove the reference to the specific date/region if you feel more comfortable that way. 😊 I don't think referenced it specifically (I recall thinking I don't want to because I don't want to draw attention to locations), but if I did then please let me know and I will 100% edit to remove anything that points to location of those events. 😊

My ex and I are on good terms. He will actually house-sit for my mother and I when we go away in a few months (just booked a roadtrip to coincide with my sister's uni graduation ceremony), to look after the 3 dogs. He is still very much a trusted person in terms of our house and care for the dogs & our belongings. Just very frustrating sometimes with his behaviours when you are trying to coordinate or depend on things routinely. He is well-intent though.

I don't think I've mentioned here that I also lived overseas for a year as a child. It was moving back from there that triggered my depression initially. It was a good time whilst I was overseas that year - good friends, no bullying, no abuse; got to travel to other SE-Asian countries in holidays.

But there was also a 3-month living in africa by myself (tourist visa) when I was fed-up with australian/sydney culture and lack of community; this was just before I moved to where I am now.

lot to unload which can be draining on all levels. Lots to take in. I’ve fully read, head not able to take it all in due to me being exhausted. Have things I need to do off the forums. Will reread and reply later

briefly explain some of my experience - I have 2 steps sons and, in certain setting I talk about “my boys”. Quiet few yrs ago I attended marriage of my eldest stepson and his husband. My eldest grandson is also gay with never any interest in girls on intimate level. 3 absolute pains in the neck and at same time, when used to see and hear from them, I loved each one same as anyone else who is important me.

my parents would have been horrified (maybe disgusted)

Re: The me no one knows - SI warning

Firstly, as other people have mentioned, there is troll/s on the forums. One of the reasons I’m careful with what I say, to whom and who I’m ok about being tagged on my thread. Im aware is public forum and this doesn’t prevent things happening. Just a bit of insight.

preferring to do “my story” in one post (will try to follow a timeline). Some of which I’m mentioned already, sorry for that.

my parents were married approx 10yrs before I was born. 2 miscarriages before I was born and 1 after. From things my mum used to say, plus no mandatory recording of birth of child not born alive until short time ago, it appears my twin was not alive at birth.

one income family from when my parents got married, my parents somehow near saw a reason for my childhood home to finish being built or painted inside. Neither parent appearing to view me having my own bedroom as important until I was approaching puberty. Not sure if my father viewed it a priority even then.

child who apparently was street angel, home devil as a toddler who was raised to speak up for myself. Within first couple of years at primary school I became aware of attempts by paternal grandfather to control me. He believed children should be outside playing sports, had raised his 2 children that way and started forcing his views on me verbally. Constant arguments and me being told I was disrespectful.

10yo I was displaying signs of depression and fear of abandonment. The year prior my dads only brother and sibling having taken his own life (combination of physical health concern plus constant badgering by his father became too much)

between ages of 12 and 14yo my mums youngest sister, my maternal grandmother, paternal grandfather all died plus my dad became unwell. (Unknown for yrs, my dad had a stroke the impact of which gradually changed him from a fun loving friendly man to the total opposite. Combination of all 4 events saw my physical and MH start to spiral downwards.

up to start of form 1 (year 7) my mother fully decided what clothing I was to wear everyday. Options were dresses, skirts, shorts, tops, trousers, overalls. From start of form 1 my father dictated I was only allowed to wear school uniform or pinaform style dresses. A father who refused to have discussions about puberty and as he used to say “woman’s business “ whilst he was home, a mother who never taught me anything. A teenager who became ashamed of her body due to all the physical changes, that I was different than others and thoughts it was taboo to talk about things with anyone.

16yrs 5mths my mum and I fled childhood home with some essential furniture and whatever we could carry. For few weeks lived in granny flat in backyard of house on opposite side of town I had been born in. Due to mix of seeing car that matched same distinctive colours of my fathers, safety concerns and my father being a postal worker, after being in granny flat for short time we were moved by Police to house in another suburb. This move being front long before end of form 5 for me. Police organised a 2 stage mail redirection.

approx 20yr old Police and staff at local MH ward advised was safe to return to childhood home. Was ages before my mother and I felt comfortable enough to sleep in the bedrooms, slept in the lounge room instead, neither of us wanting to sleep in same room as had in the past. Not long after returning to childhood home became an amputee which resulted in months learning to regain balance walking. No prewarning by surgeon, nurses being the people who told me post surgery

first mortgage and my own home in my mid 30’s much to displeasure of my mother who had continued controlling me. House in different town approx 1hr drive away.
mid 40’s spent 1mth on tour of England and Ireland, arrangements made for my mother to housesit and take care of my animals. Day I departed Australia she had heart attack and spent 2 weeks in hospital. Following few mths I continued working full time and became her carer, my mother continuing to live at my home. 23 December that year my mum passed out in my arms at front door of my home. Rushed to hospital in ambulance, passing away in ED. Few weeks later I went to bed with full plan in my mind to end the lives of myself and my cats the following day. went to GP instead and was referred to psychiatrist at some stage.

got into new routine and returned to laying floating floor in lounge, dining, family and rumpus areas. Started into doing some things, Actions where I had no thoughts of my safety on any level

about 18mths later I purchased and moved into my next home, a unit back in town I had been born in. After few years I met a guy who became my husband. De facto for few years before getting married. We were married few months short of 5 yrs when he passed away from cancer.

we moved in with his elderly dad for few months prior to my husbands death. One month after my husband passed sway his sister told me to “get your things out of this house, this is my dads home”.

moved back to my home that May, adopting my 2 cats that July. I was employed by a Federal Government Department, location I was in was toxic environment. Both my physical and MH suffering. First day back at work after 3 weeks planned holidays and be bed of the night I knew I wanted to quit. Quit a job I loved with 30+ years behind me and received regular good feedback on from head office. Handed in my 2 week notice that Friday.

15mths later purchased and moved to my current location which is in different location again.

other aspect of chat from this morning on another post

@AlwaysMyself I remember you mentioning about living overseas as an adult of your own choosing. Conversation related to something different. Possibly why no more was mentioned about that time of your past.

you mentioned once about things not being “normal” for you and about moving when younger. No info apart from that.

I had put together few bits and pieces you have said and had come to my thoughts re abuse/assault. Nothing that is ever excusable or acceptable. So sorry that you went through that.

only people that know about my SH are on here plus one nurse in hospital last month. She had a student with her and both were very good. There was concerns about my obs as had always been 100% ok, not that time. After eliminating possible side effects of infusion nurse quietly and calmly, after noticing something, asked the question of how often and how bad. I realised student had closed my room door and holding dressing. Whilst dressing was applied and made so no sign showing, 3 of us were talking about total different topic. Made my think of reaction to child who has skinned a knee

Re: The me no one knows - SI warning

GD/NB Apart from few chats with Jynx and you, I’ve not discussed things with anyone. @AlwaysMyself

my parents were born in 1920’s. Could have been 1800’s and lots of things being no different.

Sex was a taboo word and subject on every level. For me, thank goodness for libraries and their books.

there was never any chats with me about bodily changes or those wonderful monthly ‘joys’.

to have even tried to open the subject of way I felt as a teenager and if it was “normal” was never going to happen and over the years nothing ever changed.

soft toys, nothing wrong with soft toys. Great emotional comfort when starting to head down the rabbit hole. Ok they don’t talk; they don’t disagree or verbally give anyone a hard time. I’m got small number soft toys including 2 weighted toys. My weighted teddy bear was packed with my hospital things last month and was a talking point with nurses plus my pain management Dr.

Never interested in boyfriend as a teenager. Situation in childhood and living in self protection mode possibly had impact also. my relationship with my husband was more along the lines of companionship fir both as compared to physical aspects.

apparently as a preschooler I was happiest making mud pies and playing in the mud with cousins or neighbours than anything most times. Lots of imagination when with my dolls.

due to extreme stress/verbal abuse there was a time when my body looked and acted like I was anorexic. Most of the rest of the time I’ve been and am big built and chested. Flatten my chest and lots of similarities to my dad including his walk. Numerous times my mum used to comment about me walking like my dad, not like a girl.

oversized, crew necked tops with sleeves at least to my elbows are what I wear. One of my favourite tshirts has design featuring motor bike and a skull. Most tops I’ve bought from a specific male orientated store I don’t have anymore as have worn them out. 🤣

mention of bras, breasts……my brains reaction is red flag and discomfort. My hubby used to say ‘female under garments’, very appropriate.

(don’t know if you saw this comment on Captains thread). With having a week in hospital I decided to buy some new night wear and found myself looking at guys daytime short-top combo outfits. Inner voice asking what I was doing, ended up not getting them.

3 gay on my hubbys side. One of my best managers and her partner are lesbian, lovely couple. Small number of lesbians where I live including the on site manager (no idea how many know about her female partner).

sexual orientation same as cultural background to me makes no difference (thanks grand dad for his views). Difference to me is people’s attitudes and way they treat others @Jynx
