PTSD.. HOW THE HECK DO YOU GET THROUGH IT?? ( trigger warning-dogs)

PTSD.. HOW THE HECK DO YOU GET THROUGH IT?? ( trigger warning-dogs)

Please help me!!!

How are you ptsd people surviving. Im so triggered by anything and everything including smells touch sound and certain words even facial expressions.!
Why am i so sensitive?
Its making my life a mysery

Long story short my youngest sister was attacked by a dog about 3 years ago but i still have so much trouble coping. She was in my arms when it happened and i blame myself for it. I wasnt the sister i was meant to be. I was meant to protect her and all it took was for me to move my arm up in front of her face and it would have got me inatead of her. Yet i did NOTHING! How could i have not do anything ( was only 15 when it happened but age shouldn't matter unless your a child) I hid it for such a long time but i held my family together and made sure everyone was safe and sound. I know they are ok now but that over protective nature is still hanaging around and im still super sensitive about everything including nightmares and being very jumpy.
Ive just disclosed this to my mum and asked how shes going and she said she's fine (she got help when it happened) and she just told me to grow up .
I think she blames me for it. I blame myself for it so it doesnt surprise me she does too.

I understand @texnuggett. In your industry there is a lot of trauma that staff go through. Unfortunately, the industry still does not seem capable of providing the best help and support for its staff.
The earlier you seek help, the sooner you will gain control over these thoughts.
Online courses can be a great way of helping.

@Former-Member @texnuggett. Talking with a therapist skilled in PTSD can really help. It's not easy discussing our fears. But it really does make a huge difference.

I am sorry to inform you. YOU NEVER GET OVER IT!!!!!!. Or through it. I have had P.T.S.D. and major depressive disorder since 1989. I sped half my life in Mental homes, LOvely turn of phase. The other half doing stuff.

I used to be on this sight a lot but I suffered a major heart attack and, as the doctor said, the CT scan showed that I had had a small stroke. Don't worry, youy will have good days and rotten days. No matter what the experts say, you will not get over it unless your memory dies.

@Loopy. I'm sorry you have struggled so much with your MI.
I had great results from EMDR. I can now talk, think about the incident & by body and mind no longer responds how it did initially with PTSD.
I believe a number of factors help with the treatment of PTSD.
How quickly recommended treatment is commenced.
The number of 'traumas' that brought on the PTSD.
How well therapist and client are able to work together.
Please @texnuggett - don't give up on finding the right therapy for you.

Hi @Loopy welcome back. While I completely respect your experiences and point of view, I think it's important that we own them as our own and not necessarily true for others. I'm really sorry that the help you received wasn't sufficient to undo the harm caused by the trauma. You're certainly right that it can have lasting effects. But nobody else has lived your particular set of circumstances and experiences and so their outcomes may well be different from yours.

I have spent years counselling victims of violent crime, and worked alongside peer support workers with very troubled pasts, and been able to witness real improvements in health, coping and quality of life. There is also growing research around post-traumatic growth that shows that the impact of traumatic events isn't only negative. I'm not glossing over the very real struggles that follow from traumatic events, particularly those that occur early in life, but I don't believe that they completely determine our future. We play a role in that ourselves in terms of our history, support, help-seeking and attitude.

Good luck with your physical recovery @Loopy. It sounds like you have a few challenges on your hands.
