PTSD.. HOW THE HECK DO YOU GET THROUGH IT?? ( trigger warning-dogs)

PTSD.. HOW THE HECK DO YOU GET THROUGH IT?? ( trigger warning-dogs)

Please help me!!!

How are you ptsd people surviving. Im so triggered by anything and everything including smells touch sound and certain words even facial expressions.!
Why am i so sensitive?
Its making my life a mysery

Long story short my youngest sister was attacked by a dog about 3 years ago but i still have so much trouble coping. She was in my arms when it happened and i blame myself for it. I wasnt the sister i was meant to be. I was meant to protect her and all it took was for me to move my arm up in front of her face and it would have got me inatead of her. Yet i did NOTHING! How could i have not do anything ( was only 15 when it happened but age shouldn't matter unless your a child) I hid it for such a long time but i held my family together and made sure everyone was safe and sound. I know they are ok now but that over protective nature is still hanaging around and im still super sensitive about everything including nightmares and being very jumpy.
Ive just disclosed this to my mum and asked how shes going and she said she's fine (she got help when it happened) and she just told me to grow up .
I think she blames me for it. I blame myself for it so it doesnt surprise me she does too.

Thats great that you have a therapist 🙂 And glad that you're working on the SI and SH, they're both really difficult things. I think you're right sh is kind of like an addiction, because it brings relief. It does actually help.. but for me, it only ever helps for a short time. Im not sure you can ever really stop until you are able to replace it with some other way of finding relief... And that seems to take a long time, or at least for me.. to find a way to look after myself and self nurture, be kind to me! But i'm getting there. slowly hehe! I also have a long list of formal diagnoses... but they're not the sum total of who I am. I'm so much more than that, and so are you 🙂

Here with you @Former-Member

Re: PTSD.. HOW THE HECK DO YOU GET THROUGH IT?? ( trigger warning-dogs)

@Former-Member. It sounds like your PTSD was triggered by this dog attack. Is that right?
After the incident you made sure that everyone else was okay and coping - but you were forgotten in this healing.
EMDR is a treatment for PTSD. And as your initial trigger was recent (3 years ago) - you may have good success with treating your PTSD.
Can you talk to your therapist about this treatment? It needs to be done by someone experienced in EMDR Therapy.
Have a look at other PTSD posts on the forum. You may get some good ideas from others experiences.

the dog attack event is the ptsd @utopia

but anything and everything triggers it!

yes i was too busy making sure everyone else was ok and coping etc so i didnt really think of myself and i still dont really.

Re: PTSD.. HOW THE HECK DO YOU GET THROUGH IT?? ( trigger warning-dogs)

@Former-Member. What what my psychologist explained to me - you can have the initial trigger - eg dog attack - but then our brains get stuck in the fight and flight stage. Our bodies are constantly being flooded with adrenaline. We can then be triggered by many other things - some of which seem small or inconsequential - but they can have a huge impact on someone with PTSD.
Speak to your therapist about different treatments for PTSD. Read up on treatments yourself.
The earlier you can get treatment - the better your outcome for moving on.

Re: PTSD.. HOW THE HECK DO YOU GET THROUGH IT?? ( trigger warning-dogs)

Gday all.

As an emergency service worker I have witness many things that I wish I hadn't, but I often feel helpless and unworthy in many situations. Even if that situation did not have a bad outcome I still blame myself for the potential or even putting someone in potential harm. I have tried to forgive my self but I keep playing situations over and over again, I should have done this I should have done that, but you know what I am not perfect. I am trying not to put myself down and blame myself and one day I will may get there, but again I am not perfect. I can not make the perfect decision, I am not superman I can't leap tall buildings, I need to stop the blame game. Forgiveness that is great advice, forgiveness of yourself. we are only humans. Thanks

@texnuggett. Great words.
I hope you manage to get there soon. Are you seeing a therapist to talk through your pain?
