I feel really overwhelmed … please help

I feel really overwhelmed … please help

Hi

I’m a partner of someone with BPD and I’m really struggling and feeling very frustrated.

Recently we went through another intense episode. My partner was crying for a long time, very overwhelmed, and directing a lot of anger and blame at me. Anything I said seemed to make it worse, so I tried to stay calm and step back.

Things escalated to a point where I felt scared and didn’t know how to react. Eventually it settled, but afterward my partner became very quiet and withdrawn. This is not the first time something like this has happened.

I’m feeling exhausted, confused, and honestly very frustrated, and I don’t know what the right response is anymore.

I’m hoping to hear from others who support a partner with BPD about:

  • How you handle situations like this
  • When to stay vs step away or get help
  • How you cope afterward without blaming yourself

Thanks for listening …. I’m really exhausted and helpless.

Re: I feel really overwhelmed … please help

Thank you @MatchaToad for such clear and helpful advice. I'm feeling overwhelm with my BPD adult daughter who lives with me, so came to this forum for some idea of what I can do and how to deal with issues. I can certainly see that I become emotionally disregulated at times and make matters worse. The constant stress and anxiety about what will happen next is really getting to me. This practical advice gives me a way forward and validates the challenges that I'm dealing with.
