how do you tell someone with schizophrenia their delusion is not real

how do you tell someone with schizophrenia their delusion is not real

Hi everyone my middle son who i have written about has a fantastical delusion which he has had since he was about 16 now he is 32 and he still has this delusion. i have been going along with this delusion for all this time and i was wondering if it was the time to tell him it is a delusion part of his schizophrenia. how do i do it? it is getting to the stage where he is beginning to doubt this delusion will get into fruition (the delusion is really complicated i would prefer not to get into it here). what should i do? he looks at me as his mother to come up with all the answers. i am exhausted by all the drama and the lies i just want to tell him the truth if it is safe to do so. what should i do?

@StuF yes i dont think they appreciate how tiring dealing with an angry 7 foot autistic man with schizophrenia, epilepsy and moderate disability is ffs. it is damn intimidating i have to tread carefully though as they are great people who have a hard job i couldnt do it nor would i want to.

Yeah I dunno how they do the work @Bunniekins but I hear you appreciate them.

I reckon "intimidating" is the word...even more complicated by the mother and son dynamic 😞

@StuF you know he calls me by my first name same with his dad because he says his parents were k1lled and we took him in as our son. he believes we are all aliens of different species.

@StuF StuF this sort of thing does your head in over time. it has made me mentally unwell tbh and hasnt helped his siblings either funnily his father is divorced from it all probably his dementia ( could be a blessing).

Delusions are so hard @Bunniekins

In my experience they can be controlled but they remain. For me, I rationalise it by thinking that as long as I don't react to the thoughts then that is enough...but having said that, I guess one needs to be convinced (enough, at least) that they are not true

So back to the original problem in this thread - unfortunately, I really don't know how you convince him...but his support team should surely know how to approach it...

*hugs*

@Bunniekins

Yep, it is difficult to know what the best approach is. I thought @MissGremlin had a good approach. Staying as much in your truth would be important, so that you don’t feel you are standing for a lie… tricky to love and support him for what he believes without agreeing things that are not true. If he is starting to question his delusion, it may be difficult but better in the long term, as he reconciles his ideas and imagination with the outside world.
