how do you tell someone with schizophrenia their delusion is not real

Hi everyone my middle son who i have written about has a fantastical delusion which he has had since he was about 16 now he is 32 and he still has this delusion. i have been going along with this delusion for all this time and i was wondering if it was the time to tell him it is a delusion part of his schizophrenia. how do i do it? it is getting to the stage where he is beginning to doubt this delusion will get into fruition (the delusion is really complicated i would prefer not to get into it here). what should i do? he looks at me as his mother to come up with all the answers. i am exhausted by all the drama and the lies i just want to tell him the truth if it is safe to do so. what should i do?

@StuF oh StuF here i was hoping you might shed some much needed light on this if i dont do it when i finally die his world will come crashing down because i am the safe person he talks to about this kind of thing. btw i will be around for some time yet but i am 60 ffs.

Sorry I can't be of any help here. I don't know what the answer is. Is there a professional that you can get advice from? Like a psychologist or psychiatrist? Just a thought...

@Oaktree hi Oaktree i am seeing my psychiatrist in late december. i have sent an email to his psychologist about this i havent heard back as yet. i had him here for 2 hours today raging on min and the crying the next he then absconded .... he wants to come home but i cant cope with him it would be detrimental for him as well. my mind is like spaghetti atm.

@Bunniekins oh my sweet, i can only imagine how exhausted you must be. Obviously a professional is the best person to approach in this situation. But if it was me trying to speak to my child about this I'd try the approach of shifting from going along with the delusion to rather just acknowledging his experience without agreeing that its real. As for him doubting this delusion you could ask what's making him think it's not real and perhaps he might feel more comfortable and it might be less confrontational.

ask psych people what they do,dunno @Bunniekins sorry,I have no idea. My accusers even go so far to say that I ..am...sane..
