MBT Therapist in Melbourne and surrounding suburbs

MBT Therapist in Melbourne and surrounding suburbs

Hi all,

I have been exhaustively searching for an MBT specialist in Melbourne and am unable to find any that are taking new patients or have a waitlist. I've only spoken to one [edited by moderator] clinic that confirmed that they have MBT clinicians but are not taking anyone new on board.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
I have been using multiple resources (must admit, AI has helped with the researched) and contacting those who fit the bill.

Seeking guidance.

That's okay. Have a look at Anna Freud's research then. https://www.annafreud.org/research/research-library/mentalization/1/

You asked, and that's why I'm providing. Otherwise I wouldn't. @EternalFlower

Hi @tyme i asked because I felt it breached forum guidelines and had questioned if it was okay to day that as we are allowed only to mention evidence based claims and I feel spectrums website borders on advertising.

Re: MBT Therapist in Melbourne and surrounding suburbs

Okay @EternalFlower It's interesting because I never mentioned a service. I said MBT in general. Sorry you interpreted it that way.

@tyme

I myself attended spectrum in June last year while they marked their birthday. I have lived experience of accessing Spectrum and know what they offer. I am so sorry if u know a bit more than me, but I would imagine that ideologically each peer and Spectrum client has equal footing. Thats my stance, anyway, so I will have to hold my own lived experience as it pertains to my identity and narrative. I have also done 2.5 years of private mbt which was quite a special experience with an mbt specialised psychiatrist in the community.

I have also been part of consults related to spectrums website that u reference. I also advocated for increased peer support services which are now offered to those on the waitlist at Spectrum.

I would so appreciate if some time was also given to honour and hold my lived experience as all peers are equal. Thanks.

However, to my knowledge they haven't really changed or rewritten the space unfortunately and perhaps another orginisation can really make that difference. I guess I seperate spectrum the place and their quite specific approach to BPD and MBT and the therapy established via Peter Fonagy in the 1990s which can be incorporated into many different approachs and therapists can use as a psychodynamic treatment - https://www.healthline.com/health/mentalization-based-therapy

That's also interesting because the website changed in the last 2 years.

Hi @tyme the page you quoted isn't super factual - you linked to Spectrum’s website and quoted their self-promotional language (“immense interest,” “sold-out accredited training”).

This is in the best interests of spectrum, which is a publicly funded research centre, but i was speaking more broadly about MBT and not seeking to blur advertising.

I don't believe the website changed 2 years ago, from my experience that is incorrect.

Feel free to check your sources on that one . I feel sometimes a bit put off by the autorative language, and lack of curioisty about lived experience from someone else. While I so value and appreciate your own lived experience, it must be grounded in mutuality. Anyone i've mentioned spectrum i've heard a lot about - that the ppl in the groups are challenging, that the intake is thorough, and that ppl in vulnerable situations aren't accepted. I consistently clarify that I loved the groups and the individuals, that my intake was one sesion, and that I was accepted while vulnerable.
Again, I do feel sidestepped, but i understand that sometimes it can be hard to hear different perspectives. It takes a bit of give and take.

Hi @AuntGlow

Thank you for listening (reading).

It's a bit embarrassing to think back to how much I wrote based on what I was feeling at that time.

I had a similar moment this evening. I requested a 30min consult with a RTT (rapid transformation therapist) and reading back my notes, some of it doesn't hold true, but when I wrote it, it's how my inner world felt. I guess this is classic bpd at it's finest.

I'm OK tonight. I've had a lot of support. Sister came over again, friends have been reaching out almost hourly, got tickets to a music event with a friend that will be a lot of fun.

The biggest shift for me was spending time with my fp, first time we've been face to face since ending our romantic relationship. It was hard, but comforting. So strange to be heard and responded to so differently now that the dynamics have changed. Or maybe it was like that the whole time and I just couldn't see it because the pressure of being perfect is gone. Does that make sense? Or resonate?

I want to apologise, you've checked in with me several times and I haven't asked how you are.

How are you this evening?

hi @peaceandsafety i'm sorry for the grief and dread - and for the end of the relationship with ur fp.

The pain is almost physical when i lose someone - i worked hard to have less intense feelings but i had a real doozy 2 years ago and i could barely move from the pain. It still spins me out. stay strong

Re: MBT Therapist in Melbourne and surrounding suburbs

Hi @EternalFlower, thank you for your words.

I understand how the pain feels physical. Grief takes over our entire being. In all the hard to reach corners.

Can I ask how you are feeling now after time?

I've woken up with the resumed sense of loss. I picked up my phone hoping for the morning messages that won't come anymore...
