Assistance Dog

Assistance Dog

Hey guys,

I have autism and bipolar disorder and have wanted an assistance dog for years to help with disability tasks and my mental health. It looks like I may be able to start the process soon.. yay!

My plan is to go with the organisation mindDog Australia. Does anyone have any experience with them? If not are there other assistance dog services you would recommend?

Please share your assistance dog stories if you have any. Things are feeling a bit tough for me right now and looking forward to finally getting my own dog is distracting me. 🐾❤️

Re: Assistance Dog

@MissGremlin It's interesting that your rescue dog was a better suit than the puppy. I guess that really says a lot about finding the right dog temperament. I didn't realise that they couldn't go out to public places if they are still in training that's good to know.

I'm so sorry for your losses. Losing a pet is so tough as they are a part of your family. I'm glad you have your cutie Casper. I love the vest! I was wondering whether you could purchase your own with a different design or if you had to use the organisations.

Re: Assistance Dog

@Emelia8 First of all, I love her! 🤗 Thank you so much for the info on mindDog. I think after hearing your positive feedback I will be going with them.

Where do you train Hannah to do her assistance dog work in public? Is she allowed in public spaces as a trainee or does it have to be areas where all dogs are allowed?

Thank you! 🐾

Re: Assistance Dog

Thanks @puppydoglover 🙏💕 and I have to agree, Hannah is an adorable little girl. Everyone loves her. So it's difficult sometimes to maintain the "no patting" rules for ADs. And Hannah loves everyone too, so that makes it doubly hard 😂. Has a great temperament, loves people, kids, other dogs.

As an official AD in training we have full access to all public areas and transport. So anywhere you can go, I am able to go with Hannah. The only exception being airplanes. They need to be fully accredited and have passed their PAT before they are permitted on an airplane.

If you google MindDog Australia, their website is very informative. Have a look through. It gives details of costs and the processes involved throughout.

Re: Assistance Dog

No problems at all @puppydoglover 😃

And you are right, Sane is great! I have been a member for many years, and members and staff have helped me through some really tough times. I am not online much these days, but keep a check on my many friends I still have here 💗

Just returning to the AD issue. Another of the factors determining my decision to go with MindDog. MindDog is a Nationally recognised organisation, so if you are travelling interstate, there are no issues with access. Many other organisations are only recognised within their own State, and that becomes an issue if travelling. Their AD may not be recognised as an accredited AD in other states. Something to consider

Re: Assistance Dog

@puppydoglover sorry for the delayed reply.

Yes it really is about finding the right dog for you with a good temperament 😊.

Losing them definitely took a toll but I'm so glad to have Casper. There's many different places where you can purchase vests from so it's just a matter of finding one you like 😊

Re: Assistance Dog

@Emelia8 I didn't even think to check whether the AD organisation was nation or state wide. I'm glad minDog is. I'm happy I made this post I'm learning so much. I feel a bit more prepared now.
